To think this cafe was being ridiculous

Fuckeditup1 · 01/11/2023 17:11

I went to a cafe and it just sold hot chocolates and other chocolatey things like biscuits and chocolate bars.
One of their hot chocolates came with a few individual chocolates.
but I wanted a different hot chocolate along with their individual chocolates and asked how much it would be but They refused.
they would only sell the chocolates with that particular hot chocolate.
there was no other way to buy individual chocolates and they looked really fancy.

I hate it when people order food/drinks and say things like can I have bacon instead of sausage and mash instead of chips and ...and...one or two things ok...But when you want a bespoke meal rather than what's on the menu...go home

Or provide what the customer wants and stay in business. It's the one thing that Americans all agree on, our food service does its best to make customers not want to be there.

Just take the other coffee so you can have the chocs. How difficult can it be?

Impossible as the cafe didn't sell coffee !

junbean · 01/11/2023 18:05

Their point of sale is probably not set up for that.

dammit88 · 01/11/2023 18:08

It's hard to know without knowing what the 'menu' of drinks was really - in some quite fancy places I could see how this would be akin to changing the menu - in other places it would be a straightforward sort of swap. What were the differences in the hot chocolate?

diddl · 01/11/2023 18:11

What were the chocolate & the chocolates?

🤣🤣 "go home"- couldn't agree more!

HolidayHollie · 01/11/2023 18:18

It does sound off but there may have been reasons like stock as others have said or perhaps it is some sort of special so they are only sold together.

RagamuffinCat · 01/11/2023 18:25

Shops have to legally provide a list of allergens for items for sale now (Natasha's Law) and staff won't be allowed to deviate from the permitted products because of this. At our work we have to get permission to even use a different sized pack of strawberries, even though one strawberry is the same as another.

Desperatenow1 · 01/11/2023 18:27

This would really piss me off, how difficult could it possibly be to make another drink and throw a couple of chocolates on there, I doubt there are many people asking for a different drink so it's hardly a hardship. I wouldn't bother with them again!

xyz111 · 01/11/2023 18:30

They've probably got the right amount of stock for that hot chocolate and those chocolates. If they wanted you to mix and match, they would offer that. Don't be THAT customer 🙄

BlackberrySky · 01/11/2023 18:30

I think it's a shame they couldn't be more flexible - it's perfectly normal for customers to ask for minor tweaks to menu items.

FKATondelayo · 01/11/2023 18:31

Dial 101 and have this logged.

WandaWonder · 01/11/2023 18:35

Maybe you can stage a sit in and get banners and get the bbc to do a story on it, cnn may cover it as well

jlpth · 01/11/2023 18:37

Maybe the assistant was just doing as told?

YABU to say chocolate thay many times that I had to go straight for a Wispa and haven't had my dinner yet 😭😭

Yabu because now I want a wispa but haven't got any 😭😭😭

HeddaGarbled · 01/11/2023 18:44

It was a special promotion, probably to push a drink that wasn’t selling well. Allowing customers to swap drinks would have negated the whole point of the promotion.

Desperatenow1 · 01/11/2023 18:48

This is the sort of thing that makes businesses fail.

We have a cafe near us who, despite being virtually empty will not alter "their policy" and within 3 days of opening they had a bad reputation and haven't really got off the ground, which is a real shame as the area is a goldmine had they just been a bit more flexible, they would be thriving.

Their policy is to take orders at the till and take money for that particular order, you are then supposed to find a seat and they yell at you when the order is made so you can go up to the counter again and collect it.

I went in at about 3.00pm on the third day of opening, despite several local friends telling me about their frustrations with this way of operating and gave it a go. On this occasion there were three of us and we ended up having 3 coffees each, a sandwich and a cake, but it was progressive so we started with a coffee and a sandwich and then had another coffee and cake and then another coffee, we were there about about 1.5-2 hours. Each time we wanted something extra we had to get up, go and pay for that one item, sit back down, wait to be yelled at, go and get the item and sit down again. It was an absolute rigmarole!

Meanwhile, the two staff behind the till, stood idly around as there were no other customers in the shop and the two owners sat on their laptops at the back of the shop ignoring what was going on in their new cafe. I am still flabbergasted by the sheer stupidity of it! I have never been back.

If it wasn't selling well.....there's their answer right there! 😂

It's a drink! It hasn't been manufactured and produced and there are shit loads of stock of it that they over ordered.

Do behave... honestly...😂😂😂

Pinkpinkpink15 · 01/11/2023 18:50

@Fuckeditup1

what Hot Chocolate did the chocolates come with & which one did you want?

g0at · 01/11/2023 18:52

I can't believe so many people think the op is BU 😂....all they did was ask...I'm sure they weren't the first and won't be the last.

Cafe could perhaps offer the drink and then a chocolate of your choice instead. Or sell the chocs separately too, as op suggested.

Whalewatchers · 01/11/2023 18:57

Sometimes staff say no to things and it's a bit of a computer says no type situation where they can't compute something which isn't as they have been instructed. I'd say the owner would have said no problem and adjusted his order of chocolates to compensate.

JudgeJ · 01/11/2023 19:04

Americans all agree on, our food service does its best to make customers not want to be there.

Is that why so many American menus have the phrase 'No substitutions' prominently displayed?

As long as they didn’t then expect a tip! Or add a service charge - what service? 😂

Doodleflips · 01/11/2023 19:24

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable, I think the cafe was being awkward.
I don’t know why so many people have said it’s difficult to specify what you want, is it people pleasing? It’s ok to request a variation, they can say no but it doesn’t make it wrong to ask

MariaLuna · 01/11/2023 19:27

Businesses have every right to operate how they want.

You sound rather "precious" OP.
