Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

Looks like this supermarket loyalty card scam is being investigated soon. About time!

It's such a con, telling people they are saving money by having a clubcard, when all they are doing is ramping up the prices for people who don't have a clubcard, and charging a normal price to the people who have one.

I actually can't believe some people still fall for it! Confused They really believe having a clubcard makes everything cheaper for them. hint; it doesn't!

Yes, I was pleased to see this too.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 29/11/2023 17:05

Yes I noticed this too. This is the CMA press release: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cma-sets-out-autumn-update-in-review-of-competition-in-groceries-sector

With the rise in some supermarkets making cheaper prices only available for loyalty card members, the CMA plans to begin a review of the use of loyalty scheme pricing by supermarkets in early 2024. The CMA’s work will consider how the growth in loyalty scheme pricing is affecting consumers and competition in the groceries sector.

Amazon might be cheaper for many products but their methods are very questionable, very poor treatment for those working in the warehouses, sneaky Amazon Prime promotions which sign you up without you noticing, not paying UK taxes so being able to undercut many other suppliers etc.

Im also sure Amazon make good use of our data regarding our shopping habits, probably more than Tesco or other supermarkets do, as they are global based.

Amazon provides good customer service, it's easy to avoid signing up for PRIME and it provides a marketplace for lots of small businesses.

And it does pay tax in the UK - think of the employer NI just to name one tax it pays.

I can't comment on the treatment of its workforce, I know some were on strike last week.

But it doesn't really solve the issue of two tier pricing in supermarkets. I wouldn't buy my food shop from Amazon.

FreshWinterMorning · 29/11/2023 17:12

I am really glad to see this inquiry/investigation is happening (soon!) Supermarkets forcing/bullying people into having a 'loyalty card' is shitty behaviour. And people are being forced into it, because if they don't have it, they have to pay much more - sometimes double.

It's a con. Especially as people who have a clubcard are not paying less. They are just paying a normal price! (The ones without a clubcard are just being charged a lot more!) Having said this, I don't, because I refuse to use the stores who have a clubcard, and charge much more to the people who don't have one.

Deathwillbebutapause · 29/11/2023 17:17

Sainsbury's have really ramped up this behaviour (charging as much as £6 more for some meat I was looking at if you don't have a Nectar card). It has really put me off and I'll go elsewhere.

mantyzer · 29/11/2023 17:18

I have a TESCO club card but have stopped shopping at Tesco since they started doing this.

PrueRamsay · 29/11/2023 17:21

I don't understand, I may have misunderstood what happens.

You get to the till, and in order to get cheaper prices, you have to pass them your clubcard or scan it yourself, that's right yes?

What is difficult or a big palaver about this? Surely you just take it from your purse/wallet/bag and use it?

mantyzer · 29/11/2023 17:58

Easy to forget.
But the price with the club card is the going price. So people are being charged above the going rate for refusing to give them their data.

Surely you just leave it in your bag/purse/wallet?

I understand re the prices, just meant cheaper than you would be charged without the card. Why would anyone choose to pay the higher price? I’m sure I am missing something here!!

mantyzer · 29/11/2023 18:03

And how many cards should you carry every day?
I go out sometimes with just my debit card. If I take my large purse I have loads of cards. I refuse to have apps for them all as it eats up the data and memory.

rothbury · 29/11/2023 18:21

I guess it’s a choice people make.

I have a Clubcard and it’s always in my purse. I choose to do that so that I pay less than someone without a card.

@PrueRamsay You can tilt your head with your faux naivety as much as you like. Wink The simple fact is that some people have no desire to have a supermarket clubcard. As a pp said, they harvest peoples data with the clubcards, and the fact is that some people do not want them.

It is 'THAT SIMPLE' and clearly you are missing something! You are missing the fact that some people don't want them, and are pissed off at these supermarkets trying to bully people into them.

Regarding the data-harvesting, some people may say 'you're paranoid!' but IDGAF. I don't want one and I won't have one. I shouldn't be penalised because I choose to opt out. It's bullying and controlling behaviour. 'SO, you won't have our card? Pay 40-80% more then!' As I, and others have said, the clubcard prices are not cheaper, they are normal prices. The prices you are charged without a clubcard are massively over-inflated. Sometimes double.

I have noticed this practice for some time now. Definitely for a year or more. Even the BBC had a news article on it 2-3 months back. Which magazine had highlighted it! I am glad someone is officially looking into it now!

You can't screenshot the QR/bar code either, so if you have no signal you're stuffed.

chattyness · 29/11/2023 20:21

I like my clubcard bargains but I shop online now so my card number is stored, but prior to that I used to just have the card in my purse all the time. What really annoys me is the two tier pricing between Morrisons supermarket online and the way they hike the prices in the Morrisons Daily stores, you pay at least a third more in these stores on most things, it's not fair at all. I checked them out as we have a Daily store local to us but I never use it now unless I'm desperately needing something. They're capitalising on the fact that some people will have to depend on them so pay the price or do without & it stinks!

Behindyouiam · 29/11/2023 20:36

@FreshWinterMorning you're not penalised for not having one! I'm rewarded for having one. 🤷‍♀️

DingleDongle80 · 29/11/2023 20:41

Yep! I have both cards but, on principle, I avoid shopping in both stores now.

The prices without are outrageous and the prices with are no cheaper than elsewhere. It feels like a con and so I shop in supermarkets that don't do this now.

ZiriForGood · 29/11/2023 21:16

YANBU.
I hate two tier pricing. It just feels as a scam. If they value the customers data so high, what awful things must they do with them?

What awful things do you imagine they do with it? Confused

They looks at what you’re buying to try and sell you more things.

Mum2jenny · 29/11/2023 21:22

Obviously up to each individual if you want to agree to the Tesco terms. It works for me but I also have cards for the other supermarkets. So I pick and choose. I can ‘save’ apparently lots of money, but it’s all crap.

I don't know, they might be selling them further, or cross-referencing them with other data? The price difference seems too aggressive to be explained this easily.

I know what you’re saying, and I rarely use Tesco, but if I’m in there the card makes it cheaper than if I didn’t have it. Whether the prices are gouged in the first place is another discussion.
