Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

Interesting. It’s not that I don’t believe you, but I have had a look and the only iron that Tesco sells for £46 is not available for any sort of Clubcard price. It’s £46 for everyone, so no 2-tier pricing 🤷‍♀️Anyone would be a fool to pay that price, granted, as you’re right that it does retail much cheaper on Amazon. But things will always be cheaper somewhere else.

It was this one - no longer on a Clubcard deal though.

I guess I can probably find the receipt somewhere. 2 minutes on google will find it for half the price elsewhere from many retailers! Tesco are way overcharging for it at the moment

Thank you! I am in complete awe of your investigative skills!

Amazon might be cheaper for many products but their methods are very questionable, very poor treatment for those working in the warehouses, sneaky Amazon Prime promotions which sign you up without you noticing, not paying UK taxes so being able to undercut many other suppliers etc.

Im also sure Amazon make good use of our data regarding our shopping habits, probably more than Tesco or other supermarkets do, as they are global based.

junbean · 02/11/2023 01:43

Most grocery stores in the US are the same. To get the member discount I have to scan a barcode with my phone from a tag just under the item, and it takes forever to scan. My town is very overcrowded so stores are always packed, so I'm basically being rude to everyone by standing there with my stupid phone trying to get the lower price. It takes forever to do a normal shop. Then at the checkout I have to scrutinize the screen to make sure the deal actually went through and usually there's mistakes and it takes forever to fix it. Every single time I wonder why they can't just make the member price the regular price?! I save a lot of money shopping at those stores, but it's almost not worth the hassle. At least our member info is tied to our phone number so I don't need my phone or a card for that, but I still have to use my phone to scan every fucking thing that has a sale price.

This is pomelo season. I bloody love a pomelo.

I bought one at Lidl for £1.99. That's where I usually get them.

I then heard Tesco have them for £2, so the next time I bought one, I got it from there. It was both bigger and nicer than the Lidl one.

This week its on clubcard offer for £1.70.

Seems like a genuine deal to me 🤷🏽‍♀️

That’s because it is! Some people on here won’t have it that you can make a saving on Clubcard but it’s very clear to those of us who do that you can!

Of course you have to check, as you have done, though 👍

Deathwillbebutapause · 02/11/2023 07:34

The co-op do it too e.g. Meal deals are 50p dearer without the card

It's annoying and I get what I can elsewhere

It clearly IS that you don’t believe her if you went to the trouble of checking in that much detail. But I’m stubborn inquisitive too 😅

The £46 iron is the “Tower Ceraglide”. It was on a clubcard offer with £20 off in March.

So yes, the £46 was inflated, and they discounted it to the level of other retailers standard prices.

Fair enough! But that price is still £46 even though the Clubcard offer was in March? Seems like that’s just what they charge for that product, absurd though it is. It’s pretty rare to be buying an iron and everyone would surely check out a range of products to compare prices?

What I can’t get my head round is why people are adamant you can’t save on your regular weekly shop, when you absolutely can! As I said upthread, you just look for which, say, crisps or cheese or whatever is on Clubcard offer that week. You’ll see that it is anywhere from 20p to £1 cheaper than all the comparable products on the shelf. It’s achingly simple!

I really don’t see why anyone finds it so angst-inducing. As for the preciousness about data-harvesting… anyone that worried about that sort of thing surely wouldn’t be on a social media site at all?!

Why are you so determined to defend the indefensible? Tesco, having forced out the local competition are now happily ripping us all off whilst pretending to offer good deals. Most of us don’t have time to traipse round lots of shops or spend hours online to save a few pence on a tin of beans. Tesco suck you in with the promise of a discount on a few items, generally junk and UPF food and then overcharge you on many others.

Unfortunately people like you seem to swallow this hook line and sinker.

Why so aggressive? As it happens, I generally don’t have time to visit loads of stores. Tesco is right by my house and I find it easy to scan the shelves to see which product has money off.

Irons aside, can you explain why the examples I’ve given don’t represent a saving?!

I’m not ‘determined to defend the indefensible’ 😂If you’re so opposed to companies doing whatever they can to maximise their profits and their customer loyalty, you must find modern life rather unbearable! As a pp has said, have a look at how Amazon operates (or don’t! It might traumatise you!).

I know Tesco is after my money! I’m also capable of looking at prices on the shelves and seeing where the actual savings are.

GreenAppleCrumble · 02/11/2023 09:54

@Elphame
I mean, the thing is, all big companies, and I do mean all, are absolute bastards, from supermarkets to energy companies to hotel chains. Bastards, the lot of them.

But you have to shop somewhere! I find, by using my Clubcard judiciously, I save money. It’s convenient. The end.

I know they are not doing it out of some benevolent motive though! Same as all companies.

If you were arguing against all big companies and their faceless money-grabbiness, you’d maybe have a point. But didn’t you cite Amazon as a point of comparison?! 😂😂 Come on.

Rubyupbeat · 02/11/2023 10:05

Sainsbury's do the same, I thoroughly dislike it, as all they are doing is push other prices up, but I still shop there, with my nectar card, hypocrite that I am.

Moonmelodies · 01/11/2023 09:44

They should do a third tier super-discounts for Clubcard+ people!

They do - it's the extra 10% discount off two big shops a month. I think they're offering a month's free trial for anyone who joins at the moment.

I manage to take full advantage by stocking up in those shops and just doing top up shops for milk, fruit and veg in between.

Sometimes I manage to stack offers - the wine we like on Clubcard price; buy any six save 25%, then a further 10% off.

I think most offers are genuine as I do compare prices for things I buy regularly. If the offer is particularly good (often on some branded coffee, marmalade and chocolate that I buy) I will buy a few.

If I need something in particular and don't like the price I will look online to see if anyone else has a better deal and call in if I'm passing. MIL stocked me up with teabags from Ocado in the summer, saving about £3.50 a box on the RRP. I can only get them from Waitrose as neither Tesco nor Sainsburys stock them any longer!

DSis likes Maltesers and I need a small gift for her birthday. I checked online last night. Asda don't sell the large box; Sainsburys have them for £4.50; Tesco normal price is £4, but £3.60 with Clubcard and then I can save another 36p. Why wouldn't I take advantage?

With Sainsbury's, the non-nectar prices are what I was paying before they introduced them.

All supermarkets are the same, even Aldi and Lidl have some items dearer than in other places, they compete against each other to get customers through their doors. This has always been the case with loss leaders placed in strategic places for impulse buys.

They base this tactic on the assumption that most people do not have the time or inclination to traipse around different supermarkets for their weekly shop. I use Tescos because I’m familiar with their products having lived near to large stores for over 40 years and now that I cannot physically get to the shops, I prefer their online system to other supermarkets and their after sales service for returns or complaints is brilliant. They are happy to refund damaged produce if I find something after the driver has left without question.

But I’m not stupid, I know some items will be more expensive there than other supermarkets especially if they are running promotions but I reckon it’s swings and roundabouts over time.

Nomorescreentime · 02/11/2023 11:26

It works fine for me 99% of the time, occasionally though I’ll pop in without my keys or my phone battery has died and I don’t have a clubcard. That happened to me the other day and the price difference was so awful I didn’t complete my shop and got the rest at aldi. So I guess they’ve missed out there.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/11/2023 11:58

@GreenAppleCrumble

We've a similar shopping approach 😀

EarringsandLipstick · 02/11/2023 12:01

I don't think the iron is the best example. For any household purchase, I'd check a few local retailers, and would never choose Tesco (as I've better options locally)

The value is really in a selection of every day items that have a reduction available. Some times this works well for me; other times the Clubcard offers are f relevant / aren't going to be the products I plan on buying. So, it's helpful sometimes, not always.

It's not that complicated!

Exactly!

I can't understand why so many are acting as if Tesco alone are out there being money-grabbing bastards - of course they are! Like the rest of them

But within that context it is still possible to benefit from a small, measurable discount, at an individual level.

Solmum1964 · 02/11/2023 13:02

For those commenting about not being able to open apps on their phones, I've had this problem in Sainsburys - where you have to save their Sainsburys offers in the Nectar app to take advantage of their personalised offers.
Whilst they aren't discounts, they are bonus nectar points which soon add up for more money off vouchers. Quite often it's 60 nectar points for a loaf of bread (DH particularly likes their Taste the Difference multiseed loaf so I pop in every other week to get some for the freezer), or even 200 for a pack of sausages. I couldn't get the app to open one day so went into settings and connected to the store wifi. Problem solved. Might be worth seeing if it works for you.

Icefoot · 02/11/2023 13:09

It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

The simple answer is don't then. They've set a business model that works for them. They'd soon change it if it was losing them customers.

Probably because they've always done money off deals - the only difference is how you access them.

No. Standard pricing. Sweet peppers for example (I happen to remember the prices for these 😂). The price crept up with the cost of living rises from 50p to 60p and then back to 55p. Nectar was 35p recently.

I guess the introduction of the nectar card discounts must have also impacted the price of peppers in Aldi, given that they are 52p each...

Or maybe that's down to inflation
