Or should tv stop giving Rebecca Loos airtime?

SwiftieGrainger · 30/10/2023 18:36

Disgusted that Rebecca Loos has been invited on Good Morning Britain to comment ( not the first time ) on the Beckham documentary. The Beckham documentary is 1% about the time she popped up in his narrative and its not authentic to make a show like that without including details of something like the affair with Rebecca that made so many headlines at the time. That said both Victoria and David addressed it respectfully, never named her and didn't really say anything remarkable or ground breaking at the time. For her to now be given TV time about how much it annoys her that it was spoken about is despicable. I'd imagine it's worse for his wife to revisit than her, she just seems so very nasty and bitter. Aibu or should this sort of weird media circus not be on television?

Yabu - I really respect how much she's banging on about it instead of reflecting on the hurt she played a part in and staying quiet.
Yanbu - why is this on our television and why are we paying someone with their morals in the gutter to say their bit?

OP has been talking about the affair longer than RL now 😂

Indeed 😂

...plus, if this specifc affair wasn't the biggest example of power inbalance between an employer and employee, I don't know what is.

Edited

Yes, well I mean Monica Lewinsky is probably up there but she’s also giving a masterclass on how to reclaim the narrative when a rich and powerful man sleeps with a female employee and gets the pass, while they get destroyed by the press and social media.

I’m cheering them on, to be honest. Not their original action, although, who am I to judge, but their resilience and ability to own their own response in the face of a tidal wave of misogyny and hypocrisy.

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 31/10/2023 16:20

Yeah, good shout - Monica L may well be an even better example! At least Becks wasn't PotA at the time Grin

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 31/10/2023 16:44

RL has the right to be annoyed that, yet again, the Beckhams tried to spin the narrative of 'horrible stories' ie, malicious, untrue ones, instead of admitting the affair.
All journos would be clued up that the statement he gave about RL at the time was not a denial, just cleverly worded to sound as though it was, even though Richard Madeley kept insisting through the interview yesterday that Beckham had denied it.
Beckham had the chance to appear in the documentary and say 'we are not prepared to talk about that, it is in the past'.
RL seems to own the fact that she did not behave well at the time but why should she take this blame wholly, while he acts as if something bad happened to him, rather than admit his part in it?
She didn't lie when she spoke about the affair and has every right to reiterate this.

Yes, I’m here and happy to talk about it. That wasn’t my point either. Oh well, never mind, it’s not a big deal.

Anyway, twenty years ago two people had an affair. One a married and very rich, famous and powerful man. One an unmarried female employee who spoke to the press about it.

The rich and famous man brings it up again 20 years later in a documentary that they allegedly were paid a huge amount of money for on top of their existing fortune. The woman is deluged by the press and social media again in her normal life. She responds and makes likely a small percentage compared to him. I can’t get upset about that.

Perfect summary. @SwiftieGrainger you really are coming across as so massively overinvested and bias that it's obvious you have some emotional attachment to the story/people. It's really odd. And fir what it's worth, the only other article on a different forum I've stumbled across has most people saying how classy and elegant RL comes across.

I thought the Netflix show was a puff piece. It wasn't real and it projected the Beckham brand as they would like us to see it. It dredged up the unflattering past and I think it's fair enough she told her side of the story.

But it told only part of the story - the affairs, the desperate campaign for a knighthood, the £125m Qatar ambassadorship and their human rights record, the OCD control. Who just tells his wife they're moving to a foreign country without even a word of consultation or thought for his kids? It's clear he was mad about her at the beginning but is he now? Or is he all about David Beckham?

It was 20 years ago, agree with the OP. Would you have invited the violinist whose name I don't know who has a child fathered by Boris Johnson to discuss the Covid inquiry comments about the former Prime Minister?

Lol I can't believe that in some people's lives, the importance of an online reality show/puff piece is comparable to that of a statutory public inquiry

Absolutely this.

And the amount of sycophantic, gullible people who say they came across really well. Well duh of course they're going to come across as down to earth and self deprecating with his pretend oh I'm about to cry look. That's the image they wanted to portray.

The Beckham brand has been fooling the public for years. They were hardly going to come across as arrogant and egotistical. One thing about the Beckham's is that they are experts in the PR game.

Good ole MN black and white thinking.

Totally possible to enjoy the Becks doc ( the 90s, the footy, general sleb nosey ) and realise it wasn't a critical or incisive journalist probe. 😆

You know, not " sycophantic or gullible".

These things, along with the astonishing privilege and banality of their older children, are the main things I think of when considering the Beckhams.

Sartre · 02/11/2023 08:09

The Beckham’s asked for it and should have expected it imo. They didn’t need to mention the affair in the docu at all, that was their choice and they must have known it would make the story (and her) reappear.

This was her big claim to fame at the time, didn’t she even go on celebrity big brother? Crazy really given the fact she was purely ‘famous’ for sleeping with Beckham. She hasn’t been in the limelight for at least 15 years, she easily could and should have stayed away even after this documentary yet she decided to crawl out of the woodwork again. Obviously still loves the attention.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/11/2023 08:16

Well it works both ways tbh.

No one made Beckham make a documentary. Obviously loves the attention. LoL.

In fairness, her interviews were a response.

You what?

" banality of older children" ?

Are you unfamiliar with Brooklyn and his brothers?

well @cocolocopocos not familiar with them personally.

Are you?

They're only young adults/teens going about their lives.

I expect my life would look pretty banal if it was in the press. 😁 Yours too probably.

Based on not much.

Snappy answer but a lot of the thread is about the rights and wrongs of a situation.

You are being incredibly derogatory about young people you don't know. And expect others to agree.

But lol on.

The Beckhams - and their spoilt, directionless, grown-up offspring - have showcased their banality all over social media and beyond for years.

Hardly surprising that people like me will comment on it.

I don't 'expect' anyone to agree (although I'm sure many do!)
