Husband won’t call grandchild by his name

our grandchild (5 months) has an unusual name. It’s a made up name which is a bit ‘out there’- think along the lines of ‘starry-Skye’ or ‘misty-bridge’. Our daughter in law is a bit whacky.

It’s of course entirely up to the parents to choose the name of their child but my husband won’t even say his name as it makes him cringe so much. He refers to the baby as ‘the little one’ or will call him by his middle name.

It’s now become apparent to the parents how he refuses to use his name and it’s causing an atmosphere. I just don’t know what to say to them as I completely understand his point and feel very sorry about the potential bullying he (the baby) is likely to encounter further down the road.

Advice on moving forward please.

Where on earth have you got an 'r' from in the middle of Nevaeh??

From the phonetic pronunciation, like I said. Most English speakers would pronounce neva as “never”.

Are you my MIL? I too am 'controlling' 'difficult' blah blah blah

Names not that bad I've heard worse. At school he'll probably just get called Dick or Dixie. Nothing wrong with that.

Your husband sounds vile - did he belittle your son when he was growing up? He sounds like a bully who says it like it is and accuses people of not being able to take a joke.

The name is that bad!

It's a cute name but for an adult male it will prove a challenge, unless he becomes a famous actor. Get him in acting classes :-)

In france they shorten names like jean-pierre to just JP.

He may default to D-M as he gets older.
I understand the parents being precious about a name but it is quite a mouthful, before even considering the unusualness.

Kind of on his side. I would struggle if my children gave my GC a ridiculous name, especially given the fact they all have very traditional names. I actually think I’d struggle not to tell them the name is daft, especially if it was as bad as starry sky.

Are you really expecting us to believe that your son called his baby something that sounds like "Dick Stream"??

On the vanishingly rare change this isn't a windup, just call him Dixie or Dixie Moon.

Lattims83 · 09/11/2023 21:49

I mean, Dixie Moon beam really is a very stupid name, can't blame the guy for laughing every time he says it, he's only human. Plus, people will be telling that kid how stupid their name is for the rest of their life, may as well get used to it now.

It really is ! I try and try and always get corrected. I have an unusual spelling of my name and changed it so it was easier for people to pronounce. Got annoyed being called Kerry or kera. 🙄
