To think this card is inappropriate?

Saw this in a supermarket the other day. I find it very distasteful and almost upsetting. Surely if we're condemning sexual violence, we're condemning all sexual violence? Rape jokes are not acceptable, so why is a card joking about serious sexual assault OK?

To think this card is inappropriate?

I often use the phrase "stick it up your arse" then. Am I guilty of sexual assault then too?

asking for a friend

Do you do it? If no, then you're not.

(Though I think it's a pretty crude phrase even just as it is)

AmandasFleckerl · 27/10/2023 22:17

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 27/10/2023 20:58

Sexual assault? Not sure what's sexual about shoving a handle up someone's arse because they've annoyed you.

I didn’t read the card properly, I thought she had inserted the vacuum head first 😳

Sometimes, jokes don’t need to be spelled out to be understood by the general public.
Actually, the humour in this joke lies in what ISNT said.
I think those who are offended by the joke are maybe the kind of people who take things literally and are actually misunderstanding the joke.

The joke, for those who are misunderstanding, is that the husband came home to his partner hoovering.
Instead of saying thank you or similar, the husband simply criticised his wives hoovering.
The wife then told him to “stick it up his arse” to show her anger at his lack of appreciation. This part of the joke is not stated, it is implied.
However, they use the A&E quip as a way to nod to the hoover being inserted into the man’s anus.

This is relatable because many home keepers (regardless of their gender - my partner is the main home keeper in our relationship) feel like the work they do is under valued by their partner.

Happy to help.

Why would he stick a vacuum so far up his and that he needs hospital?

People joke about murder and suicide. Yes, almost any topic can be funny if it is delivered well and in the right context. Poking fun at sensitive themes or victims is not funny. There's a difference.

This joke is very clearly about the common phrase 'up your arse' etc. as someone has already said better than I have

The Wanda Sykes routine about detachable pussies (she's american, she's referring to the vulva) is a five-minute-long rape joke and it is the funniest thing you'll ever watch.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 22:17

@HootyMcBoob

How charming.

fluffypotatoes · 27/10/2023 22:15

Why would he stick it up his own arse so far he had to go to A&E?

Is this your first day on the internet? I suggest you don’t google “man with ___ stuck up his arse”

Sunshineclouds11 · 27/10/2023 22:18

Thank you for explaining. I genuinely did not interpret it in that way. I did not see the connection between "shove it up your arse" (inoffensive) and this card. I genuinely thought it was implying the woman had shoved it up his arse😳

You've made me laugh tonight Op.

Damnloginpopup · 27/10/2023 22:19

Hang on! No! He did not commit arsicide! She rammed it up his arse in anger at his patriarchal condescending abuse!

VeridicalVagabond · 27/10/2023 22:19

adriftinadenofvipers · 27/10/2023 22:11

I guess 'dark humour' is a foreign country to those who insist on taking this literally...

Lmao I'm in agreement with most that this card isn't offensive really, but it's hardly "dark humour"

I like crude sometimes.

I'm not up my own arse. Wait, is that sexual assault too???!

I have already stated at least twice that I don’t find the joke funny. You don’t need to find it funny to understand it. And just because I don’t find it funny; doesn’t mean it ISNT funny (because some people do find it funny) and it certainly doesn’t mean it’s offensive.

To quote Stephen Fry:

”It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that" as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase.
I'm offended by that."
Well, so fucking what?”

I didn't make it clear. I was trying to say that the reason the OP thinks it's not funny is not the actual reason that it's not funny.

sangriapeople · 27/10/2023 22:19

Give over, OP.

Honestly, 10 years from now I dread to think where we will be.

Don't like the joke? Move on. Continue with your life.

fluffypotatoes · 27/10/2023 22:20

Damnloginpopup · 27/10/2023 22:14

Imagine if it was the one about the Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman marooned on a desert island after the cannibals had already eaten the missionary and sent them to fetch a hundred of any fruit to potentially save their lives...

Any racist rapist who so much as quivers their lip at that one would have to be thoroughly side-eyed!

I don't know the joke you mean but I thought society had moved on from Englishman Scotsman Irishman jokes a loooong time ago

Totally agree that no one has a right not to be offended. They do, however, have a right to find things offensive. People really seem to struggle with that difference of opinion on this thread.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 22:20

@HercuIesMorse

That's a valid point.

A 'joke' purely about sexual assault isn't acceptable.

The other subjects you mention would also be unlikely to appeal to me personally as fodder for jokes, but I'm willing to bet the point of the joke won't be the murder or suicide but some other aspect of eg reaction or attitudes or similar.

This is a crass attempt to find humour, with no nuance, in an act of assault, which would not be considered acceptable if the sexes were reversed.

I do sometimes wonder if I am autistic because I can take things really literally. This is one of those occasions.

I did wonder if some of the people offended by it might be interpreting it literally, hence why I went to the effort of typing it out.

It’s a play on “shove it up your arse”

porridgeisbae · 27/10/2023 22:21

No but it references something that does happen IRL.

How many female-on-male hoover handle-bum assaults are there? It'd actually be quite awkward logistically. Is she going to wrench the handle off the hoover, or hold the base of the hoover to assault him with the handle or...?

I get your point, though.

girlfriend44 · 27/10/2023 22:22

Horrible Card, would never buy.

This is just unfunny boomer humour.
