To think this card is inappropriate?

Saw this in a supermarket the other day. I find it very distasteful and almost upsetting. Surely if we're condemning sexual violence, we're condemning all sexual violence? Rape jokes are not acceptable, so why is a card joking about serious sexual assault OK?

To think this card is inappropriate?

This card isn’t REAL!!!!
The card is real. It exists. 🙄

It's possible to have something offensive that isn't about a real life event. You must know this.

But that’s the thing, to most people it’s not offensive, it’s just a card. I don’t actually find it funny but I’m not offended in any way by it. I can relate to it based on the ‘shove it up your arse’ phrase which I’ve thought many times!

adriftinadenofvipers · 27/10/2023 22:06

Contact the card company then and protest.

The joke is that it’s relatable for many people of both genders.

What is?

All the card says is the man comments on imperfect vacuuming. Then that said vacuum was inserted extremely far into him.

What joke exists there?

And what on earth do you mean about relatable? 😳

Sometimes, jokes don’t need to be spelled out to be understood by the general public.
Actually, the humour in this joke lies in what ISNT said.
I think those who are offended by the joke are maybe the kind of people who take things literally and are actually misunderstanding the joke.

The joke, for those who are misunderstanding, is that the husband came home to his partner hoovering.
Instead of saying thank you or similar, the husband simply criticised his wives hoovering.
The wife then told him to “stick it up his arse” to show her anger at his lack of appreciation. This part of the joke is not stated, it is implied.
However, they use the A&E quip as a way to nod to the hoover being inserted into the man’s anus.

This is relatable because many home keepers (regardless of their gender - my partner is the main home keeper in our relationship) feel like the work they do is under valued by their partner.

Happy to help.

SprinkleOfSunak · 27/10/2023 22:07

My Husband and I joke constantly about shoving things up each other’s arses when we annoy each other.

The card is supposed to be funny, and I read it and laughed, and most people I know would find it funny.

I really do worry about the direction we’re going in with humour, as a it feels the life is being sucked out of us (maybe it’s that hoover that’s been shoved up my arse?) and we’re not allowed to laugh at anything anymore.

I often use the phrase "stick it up your arse" then. Am I guilty of sexual assault then too?

asking for a friend

HootyMcBoob · 27/10/2023 21:21

I find it funny, as will many others.

Why do you find jokes about sticking vacuum cleaners up people's arses funny?

RegimentalSturgeon · 27/10/2023 22:09

there is a line that needs to be drawn.

There certainly is. ”No hoovers beyond this point”

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 22:04

This is the thing with humour - it's subjective.

Agreed.

But using sexual assault as the premise for any joke isn't acceptable.

I suggest you make yourself a nice cup of chamomile tea and listen to some Bach or Tchaikovsky to try to rid yourself of any thoughts about this evil, nasty and massively offensive greetings card. 💐

HercuIesMorse · 27/10/2023 22:10

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 22:05

it would not be for sexual reasons!!!

I can't believe this needs to be said - it's sexual assault regardless of the reason or intent.

It's making a joke about sexual assault.

People joke about murder and suicide. Yes, almost any topic can be funny if it is delivered well and in the right context. Poking fun at sensitive themes or victims is not funny. There's a difference.

This joke is very clearly about the common phrase 'up your arse' etc. as someone has already said better than I have

Wheredidyougonow · 27/10/2023 22:10

orangegato · 27/10/2023 21:05

What a first world problem, fuck me. Who has the brain space to be bothered by that.

Exactly. This is the very definition of boredom and looking for shit to get offended about.

adriftinadenofvipers · 27/10/2023 22:11

I guess 'dark humour' is a foreign country to those who insist on taking this literally...

I thought it wasn't funny because I'm bored with the whole "husband takes wife for granted, wife gets angry about being taken for granted" plot line. I lived like that for a few years and am glad to be out of there. Why would I laugh about something that women shouldn't have to put up with in 2023, yet clearly still do?

I don't like the card either

Imagine if it was the one about the Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman marooned on a desert island after the cannibals had already eaten the missionary and sent them to fetch a hundred of any fruit to potentially save their lives...

Any racist rapist who so much as quivers their lip at that one would have to be thoroughly side-eyed!

Thank you for explaining. I genuinely did not interpret it in that way. I did not see the connection between "shove it up your arse" (inoffensive) and this card. I genuinely thought it was implying the woman had shoved it up his arse😳

I do sometimes wonder if I am autistic because I can take things really literally. This is one of those occasions.

I feel very sorry for anyone who has been sexually assaulted with a hoover handle, this must be deeply offensive for them.

fluffypotatoes · 27/10/2023 22:15

SamAndEIIa · 27/10/2023 21:59

THE CARD IS JOKING ABOUT A MAN STICKING THE HANDLE UP HIS OWN ARSE WHEN INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY HIS WIFE.

Why would he stick it up his own arse so far he had to go to A&E?

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 27/10/2023 22:15

@EarringsandLipstick

If you look too deeply into anything, then everything is offensive. The make-up people wear, the skin products- well, you're clearly endorsing animal cruelty because it's tested on animals.

The cheaply made clothes you buy, well clearly you endorse exploitation of not only men and women, but children.

I find it quite offensive that people would have such self entitlement to put enough of their energy into be offended and upset about a ridiculous play on-words card when there are countless people in our own country, right now living through the most horrific circumstances. But let's all get offended about a card in a shop that is clearly just a crap card because they've run out of ideas!

EarringsandLipstick · 27/10/2023 22:16

@SamAndEIIa

There's no joke there. There's absolutely nothing humorous about describing woman doing task - man complaining - woman says stick it up your arse (implied) - a&e never saw object so far up arse.

I provided exactly the same summary in an earlier post. I'm not unable to comprehend the text.

It's just that regardless of whether I find it funny, there's no joke there.

And the only basis for any humour is the idea of sexual assault.

It's really disturbing.

I have already stated at least twice that I don’t find the joke funny. You don’t need to find it funny to understand it. And just because I don’t find it funny; doesn’t mean it ISNT funny (because some people do find it funny) and it certainly doesn’t mean it’s offensive.

To quote Stephen Fry:

”It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that" as if that gives them certain rights. It's no more than a whine. It has no meaning, it has no purpose, it has no reason to be respected as a phrase.
I'm offended by that."
Well, so fucking what?”
