AIBU to think allowing adult males to accept spaces where women and girls are undressed is a clear safeguarding risk?

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. Even so the response is unacceptable and I think I'd take my business elsewhere but of course if I couldn't for whatever reason then yes I guess that would be the only option.

Certainly around here there's no other family gyms. So it does make it hard to take your business elsewhere. David Lloyd has a monopoly and it means they don't particularly care about issues raised by members. It's an ongoing issue.

Drews · 26/10/2023 20:36

Have you had a more recent update since this one in March?

But... it seems safer to me to allow trans women into the women's and trans men into the men's.

Otherwise cis men (who are ACTUALLY dangerous to women) can stroll into the women's without question because they may well be a trans man forced to go into the women's!

Do you have any evidence to say that trans women are less dangerous than cis men? Because there's statistical evidence to the contrary (eg prison stats)

Mamma2017 · 26/10/2023 20:36

Cue half the sex offenders register joining David Lloyd as “trans.”
An absolute disgrace. Wonder if that manager would want their young daughter using the changing rooms. Highly doubt it.

flaffydaffy · 26/10/2023 20:37

They're right that it's complicated. If they had a hard and fast rule how would the staff enforce it?

David Lloyd just needs to put in some goddamn cubicles. It's the only place I've ever been swimming that had no cubicles and I felt very uncomfortable getting changed there even among women. Totally unacceptable given how much you pay.

SiennaMillar · 26/10/2023 20:39

Assigned male at birth. How ridiculous. They were observed as male at birth, due to having a penis!

Are animals ‘assigned’ male or female? No, they are scientifically male or female. Ffs. Women and girls are entitled by law to single safe spaces.

KnackeredandWiser · 26/10/2023 20:44

Use Bannatyne's if you have one near you. Duncan Bannatyne has been very, very clear that only women, and not men who think they are women, are allowed in the women's changing rooms and toilets. Good on Duncan! I'd definitely go there if I wasn't such a lazy bugger.

So women and children have to wait until someone gets hurt before they might take action.

Well yes even the police do it my ex husband threatened to burn the house down with us in it the police were all oooh he is probably just venting we will deal with it if he actually DOES something I pointed out we would be dead and perhaps something could be done now? They said no he is clearly upset you need to stop provoking him stay away from each other they wouldn't tell HIM to stay away from me though

SidewaysOtter · 26/10/2023 20:51

YA so NBU.

EveryBlinkingDay · 26/10/2023 20:52

I am troubled by the phrase 'trans females'. What even is that? You can't change sex and 'female' is a sex not a gender. Are they coming for that now too?

GreyWednesday · 26/10/2023 20:52

Trans women are far far more likely to be attacked than to attack and that is what will happen if we exclude them from safe female spaces.

Women are not shields. The solution to male violence is not to put women and girls at further risk.

ToastMarmalade · 26/10/2023 20:53

Well safeguarding is obviously not a priority for them, that is clear.

WillowCraft · 26/10/2023 20:54

SpoonGirl17 · 26/10/2023 20:34

Maybe take your transphobia somewhere else if it bothers you that much. If a cis man wants to hurt you or your DD they will. Also you are statistically most at risk from the men who are already in your life.
Trans women are not the enemy. Dangerous men are. Trans women are far far more likely to be attacked than to attack and that is what will happen if we exclude them from safe female spaces. Stop swallowing the disgusting lies being peddled by right wing bigots pretending to care about women and our safety suddenly
Also what exactly is your solution? A genitals check? What about trans men? They might have the “right” genitals but I think their big burley beards and muscles may raise some eyebrows.

There are so many unisex changing spaces out there that are used daily with no issues. Focus on something actually important.

Transmen still look like women and transwomen still look like men. It's pretty obvious, no need for a genitals check.

belgiumchocolates · 26/10/2023 20:54

I totally agree safeguarding is the priority concern.
However there is a transwoman I know who I don't feel threaten by in the slightest. They are lovely, but does that mean I would be happy undressing with them in the changing room at DL ? No absolutely bloody not because they are the opposite sex

TeaGinandFags · 26/10/2023 20:55

Sex segregated spaces such as changing rooms and toilets are protected by law. A law David Lloyd are breaking.

Write back and inform them of this. Ask for your money back. Explain how you're looking forward to your day in court.

sanluca · 26/10/2023 20:56

Women are not shields. The solution to male violence is not to put women and girls at further risk.

There is zero proof that transwomen are at risk in the mens, but there is ample proof that men take advantage of claiming to be transwomen to intimidate and harrass women in the womens changing rooms.

And apart from that, most women don't want to be naked in the presence of unknown males and frankly, why should we? Sex segregated changing rooms worked pretty ok for decades, so why force women accept communal mixed sex when they don't want to? Women aren't allowed to say no?

Itsbritneybitch22 · 26/10/2023 20:57

Safeguarding isn’t their strong point, 2 children have drowned in their clubs, switch to Nuffield health center.

Are you really saying no transwoman has EVER been a danger to women and girls? Can you please explain the difference between men and transwomen, and also include the scientific studies that back it up with examples and evidence?

StephanieSuperpowers · 26/10/2023 21:00

I mean, it's not great, but at least they're labelling themselves the Sex Offender's Choice. So every woman knows where to avoid for herself and her daughter.

Xenia · 26/10/2023 21:01

I find the letter quite hard to understand. If they just said someone with a penis will not be in the female changing that might be more straightforward.

NumberTheory · 26/10/2023 21:02

Mummy08m · 26/10/2023 20:34

I wondered exactly this. The third paragraph seems to contradict itself. Or maybe they're saying "we neither ban nor welcome TW in the women's"?

Either way the 3rd paraphraph is deliberately obfuscating word salad.

I read this, along with the "it's complicated!" weasel that followed as meaning they decide on a case by case basis. So enough of a policy to avoid photos of men with beards heading into the women's from getting on the front page and potentially causing too much work for their PR department, but not enough to actually give women the privacy and dignity they need.

GreyWednesday · 26/10/2023 21:02

@sanluca I can’t tell whether your last paragraph is made up of rhetorical questions or whether you’re disagreeing with me. If it’s the latter then I think you might have misunderstood me.

GoGoGo2 · 26/10/2023 21:03

Perhaps, all us women should dress as men and wander into men's toilets and changing rooms, for a good gander.

It is our right, after all, as transmen?

Possibly take a taser, just in case.

OKt · 26/10/2023 21:03

I would be happier if Nuffield had lifeguards on duty in their pool.

What's the difference between men and transwomen? When a man declares himself a woman what scientific changes go on inside his body to reduce his testosterone, make his penis fall off, reduce his muscle mass and strength, height/weight and speed to make him no more of a danger than the average woman? Please do back up anything you cite with scientific evidence including studies, evidence and examples. Looking forward to your well-informed reply.
