At least once a month! It's gone from jokingly commenting we can't afford the cover to full blown, seriously please don't go on mat leave we wouldn't survive! Very awkward, I can feel myself respond more and more pettily as the audacity of it is kicking in!

Wow, how nice of you to pay so much more than the legal minimum that it put your business into financial difficulties.

Or do I detect a whiff of bullshit here?

Where did I say I paid more????? I actually do pay more than minimum wage but I never said I did. Pay peanuts get monkeys.

Ahhhh, straight to name calling, now you’re showing your class. Good bye.

No, I meant maternity leave.

The legal minimum you have to pay a woman on maternity leave is absolutely piss poor in the UK. Hardly an amount that is going to put you out of business.

People that don’t own a business have no idea how someone taking maternity affects the business. I had to pay my girl then also pay for someone to do her job, I didn’t get any money back for two years and then not all of it. My friend had a grooming business, she went bankrupt when two of her girls went on maternity at the same time.

There a lot of things a woman should consider when deciding to have children. The financial impact it has on your place of work should not be one of them.

Maybe you and your friend both just suck at business. Oh no however shall we cope if all the "girls" keep having the audacity to have children? Poor you.

Obviously you’ve never or will ever own a business as from what you’ve stated you don’t have a clue. If you must know I own 4 businesses that do very well, thank you for your interest. I was just trying to show you what it’s like for business owners rather than the other side for a change. You obviously felt the need to go into attack mode. But that’s fine because I don’t have a chip in my shoulder. Bye bye.

Absolutely agree with you, that’s why business people are very careful when hiring. As vice versa m, your situation should have no impact on my business.

threatmatrix · 27/10/2023 17:42

So losing two members of staff in a business where it’s just you and them and then paying for two more staff whilst paying maternity is easy is it. Goodness me you know a lot about business don’t you.

Why TF have you used an Alan Wake gif? How is that adding to your bad points?

You've basically just admitted to discriminating against women of childbearing age.

Oh go and have a wank mate, don't you have anything better to do than troll Mumsnet? How embarrassing for you.

Baba197 · 28/10/2023 21:20

I went for a job when I was a nanny and the current nanny was leaving due to being pregnant, she’d only been there 8 months and though I understand how frustrating it must have been I was gobsmacked when the dad told me that if i took the job then I wasn’t allowed to get pregnant for at least 3 years as that’s the minimum amount of time they would need a full time nanny! The agency were furious he had said that and told him they wouldn’t be placing a nanny there. It’s none of your bosses business, I understand it’s hard for small company’s but they can’t keep making comments, it would make me nervous if I was planning a family - will they be awkward with you when pg? Make it difficult to take the appointments you are entitled to?

nobleisle · 28/10/2023 21:26

Mine was the same. Tried to talk everyone out of it. When I told her I was pregnant (early on as needed a risk assessment) she said well don't get too excited it probably won't stick.

Asked a woman if she was keeping the baby or getting rid when she announced at 16 odd weeks.

Horrible woman but besties with the big boss so untouchable

Awwwe, bless, I’m a troll and you’re the one using foul language, class personified. Your family must be so proud.

People aren't assuming it's a man because gosh, Managers Are Men, but because it's a remarkably stupid thing to say with such regularity, and I suspect women as as a class, regardless of whether or not they had children themselves, would be considerably less likely to make this kind of hilarious 'jape', suggesting that the OP's maternity leave would seriously inconvenience the company, or would, even in passing, consider that a female colleague might decide not to have children because her line manager had told her not to.

@Canonlythinkofthisone, why don't you read the OP again, and then read your little anecdote, and see if you can see the glaring difference between the two of them?

Well this comment hasn’t aged well at all, considering the manager IS female.
Perhaps that’ll help stop the idiotic, sexist MN rhetoric of assuming it’s a man making the stupid / inappropriate statements in situations like this.

Before to employ someone, you need to be able to afford them in case of tail events. If not you need to use a different type of contract …

Sarahzb · 29/10/2023 01:20

Really? This is the actual law
Pregnancy and maternity discrimination: work cases(1)This section has effect for the purposes of the application of Part 5 (work) to the protected characteristic of pregnancy and maternity.

(2)A person (A) discriminates against a woman if, in the protected period in relation to a pregnancy of hers, A treats her unfavourably —

(a)because of the pregnancy, or

(b)because of illness suffered by her as a result of it.

(3)A person (A) discriminates against a woman if A treats her unfavourably because she is on compulsory maternity leave.

(4)A person (A) discriminates against a woman if A treats her unfavourably because she is exercising or seeking to exercise, or has exercised or sought to exercise, the right to ordinary or additional maternity leave.

Thank you so much for your advice, I’ve only been in business for 30 years I’m so glad you were around to give me that information.
