Jewish Londoners are terrified at the moment, yet she feels free to tweet this. https://x.com/hackneyabbott/status/1716729429710221523?s=46&t=05yGEdd9Da70jO24KELKog

@lostinspace00 islamaphobic attacks are on the rise, it's been widely reported by main news outlets, think it was on the BBC app yesterday.

towriteyoumustlive · 25/10/2023 16:37

Awful woman.

I would consider voting Labour if they got rid of idiots like her.

I don't really think it matters where a person's sympathies lie, they are allowed to protest without losing their job.

What might complicate this slightly is that he was in his workplace. So asking, if a driver was leading a protest about another political issue on the tube, would he be let go, seems a reasonable comparison to me.

He should be let go no matter what political protest he's making. There's a time and a place and while he's working isn't it.

Teddleshon · 25/10/2023 16:45

I totally agree that you can be for the Palestinian people and against Hamas but aren’t the protests framed as “anti Hamas” protests? This is something everyone could get behind.

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 25/10/2023 16:48

@towriteyoumustlive they have. She’s an independent MP if you’d read the thread 😂

justteanbiscuits · 25/10/2023 17:23

lostinspace00 · 25/10/2023 16:17

Attacks on Palestinians is up? Where is the evidence of this? I'm asking a genuine question because I have seen no such reporting.

And to your point, no, a tube driver should have no platform to air their political views, so it seems you agree that he should have been disciplined and it was a stupid thing to do.

I only know it from first hand accounts. Palestinian kids at my sons school being attacked and abused.

And yes. I agree the tube driver should be disciplined, but so should the one that did similar for Ukraine. It's not the place for any political statement.

Rudderneck · 25/10/2023 18:13

People get very silly about comparisons.

It is possible, and often useful, to compare two things that are in many ways different, or where they are not equally serious, or whatever. You are comparing one element, not saying that they are the same thing.

Often with a comparison like that, the whole point is that they are differernt, that is why you want to compare them, to look at the element that is the same and isolate it.

DA here wasn't even comparing Israel and Ukraine, that is just sloppy thinking. She is comparing a person supporting Palestine, the country, in a political setting, to a person in the same setting supporting Ukraine. And asking if they would be seen the same way by the general public, and if they would both be fired in this scenario.

Rudderneck · 25/10/2023 18:15

Anyway, I agree that they should be treated the same, which is to say, not allowed.

But she may be right, it's possible the driver would not have been let go for a free-Ukraine chant.

soundsys · 25/10/2023 18:17

@catlovingdoctor "Free Palestine" isn't anti-Semitic and I agree that Palestine should be free

However "from the river to the sea Palestine will be free" absolutely is anti-Semitic

AzureBlue99 · 25/10/2023 18:31

Drivers should just drive the train. And shut up about anything else. Nobody needs to know their views on whatever the subject matter is. He/she was at work. Whether it was Ukraine, free Palestine or pro Israeli.

pizzaHeart · 25/10/2023 18:35

How she can’t understand the difference???
Im glad that Labour Party got rid of her.

Poudretteite · 25/10/2023 18:37

spookehtooth · 24/10/2023 23:27

All nations deserve to be free, but some nations deserve it more than others.

Some people in the UK practice cognitive dissonance over this. The UK official policy is a 2 state solution, Rishi Sunak whispered it gently so's not to upset the Israeli government. However you're a terrorist sympathiser if you speak up against the state that denies the other its existence. This is true since long before the last couple of weeks, so that isn't an excuse

Edited

It's not about punishment though - it's about eradicating the neighbouring extreme threat to Israel's existence. Hamas' mandate is genocide. They just committed the deadliest attack to Jews since the Holocaust. Israel needs to neutralise the threat, in the same way putting down a dangerous dog isn't 'punishing' it.

Hellomynameisnt · 25/10/2023 18:54

Yep agree with @AzureBlue99 .

Furthermore, I think anyone who reduces this terrible, devastating conflict to a catchy slogan needs their head examined.

Teddleshon · 25/10/2023 18:58

How in practice can Palestine be “free” without eradicating the State of Israel?

Gummybear23 · 25/10/2023 19:42

It was free before.

By implementing the 2 state peace solution Israel went back on. I still can’t believe how some Palestinian families were treated - indigenous people whose families built the cities being locked out of their own homes. Now you have a despot in charge who wants to eradicate them.

The amount of posts questioning Diane abbot’s intelligence, despite her clear academic credentials. It’s almost like whatever she achieved wouldn’t be good enough. I wish I had a 100th of the resilience she has to get up and keep fighting for peace and justice and fairness in the face of relentless abuse towards her.

we don’t see anywhere near the same level of vitriol towards some of the most disgusting politicians we currently have, actually in the front bench, making decisions, abusing their power, corrupting our politics. Wonder why.

100% This. There’s nothing wrong with her post, she has a valid point. The driver wouldn’t have gotten in trouble about Ukraine regardless of the fact it was inappropriate. I think as a politician, DA pointing out different people are valued differently is fine. It’s a struggle for me to take people seriously as they complain about discrimination while dusting off the stupid black person stereotype.

Menier · 26/10/2023 12:12

@MCOut
@Chuffaluffa

exactly this

Do you also believe that Israel cannot be free without eradicating Palestine?

Teddleshon · 27/10/2023 08:02

@happinessischocolate They certainly need to eradicate Hamas.

SammyScrounge · 30/05/2024 22:24

Everythinghasgonetoshit · 24/10/2023 15:53

This.

I think Abbot has a point that people should be allowed to sympathise with the innocent Palentinians that had nothing to do with the Hamas attacks and are now being killed, but it does come across like she isd not acknowledging the horrific things Hamas did too. The Ukrainian government are nothing like Hamas and did not go into Russia and murder people and take hostages. It's a strange comparison. I sympathise with both Palestinians and Israeli civilians because they have been dragged into this horrific war where noboby seems to give a shit about civilian deaths or casualties (even our government), but I do not have any support for Hamas and the Israeli government and BN.

I don't think a tube driver should be political at work though.

We suffer enough from activists in this country :Traffic stalled for Climate Change, people afraid to send kids to school because of trans activism, streets clogged and Jewish citizens terrorised because of Palestine, big companies proudly being activist in a popular cause...
The last thing we need is some fuckwit shouting slogans in a confined space like the Tube. This is not why I buy a ticket to travel. I do not want to be forced to listen to said FWs understanding of politics which is tiny enough to be compressed to a slogan on a tee shirt.
I hope the Tube driver is sacked for forcing his views on the public in such an illmannered way.
