Jewish Londoners are terrified at the moment, yet she feels free to tweet this. https://x.com/hackneyabbott/status/1716729429710221523?s=46&t=05yGEdd9Da70jO24KELKog

I thought she'd already list the whip.

Don't mix Palestinians up with Hamas. Its like linking the Irish with the IRA.

Being Pro Palestine is not being anti Semitic or pro Hamas.

What is happening to Israel is horrific, it is also horrific how Palestinians have been treated over the last 50 + years.

Respectably I think people need to examine the 2 sides in this conflict and have some empty for both.

I will re-iterate that what Hamas have done is barbaric but it doesn't give Israel cart blanch to obliterate the Palestinians.

Presumably on 9/11 you called for Americans to see both sides and have some empathy for Al Qaeda. Right?

Presumably on 9/11 you called for Americans to see both sides and have some empathy for Al Qaeda. Right?

But that's exactly the point, it's not asking sympathy for hamas/ Al qaeda. It's basic humanitarian empathy for Palestinians and in that case afghanis.

And if there were ever a lesson in why punishing people for the extremists among them only breeds hate, it's Afghanistan.

spookehtooth · 24/10/2023 23:27

All nations deserve to be free, but some nations deserve it more than others.

Some people in the UK practice cognitive dissonance over this. The UK official policy is a 2 state solution, Rishi Sunak whispered it gently so's not to upset the Israeli government. However you're a terrorist sympathiser if you speak up against the state that denies the other its existence. This is true since long before the last couple of weeks, so that isn't an excuse

Tinklyheadtilt · 24/10/2023 23:28

She is a total moron.

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2023 23:45

The good people of North Hackney and Stoke Newington shouid get rid of her. Why is she their mp? She’s not a Labour MP so at the next election there’s a very clear solution!

PlanetJanette · 25/10/2023 00:44

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 24/10/2023 22:46

I am not a fan of Dianne Abbott but I hate this constant “she’s stupid” rhetoric
She’s not stupid, she’s been a very competent and repeatedly re-elected MP for her constituency and retorts about her intellect are lazy

she has a blind spot with anti-semitism, as many people do. As an MP I’d expect her to do more work to address this, but she is by no means the only MP who needs this

the tweet (and who on earth thinks Twitter is the right forum for nuanced discussion??) is not hate speech, and you are perfectly in your rights to disagree but I don’t think it’s outrageous

honestly, I hate defending her because I disagree with so much of her politics, but I will call it out when I see double standards

There is more than a whiff of racist misogyny about the public discourse around Dianne Abbott.

I disagree with her profoundly. I think her views do stray into anti-semitism or anti-semitism adjacent. I think her prescription for public policy is simplistic and wrong.

But she is not stupid. She is not scum. She is a black woman operating in an environment that is hugely hostile to black women. You need to just look at how she was lambasted for drinking a tin of gin on a tube to see how black women are treated for even the most minor of transgressions.

None of this makes her right on this issue. But it does make all those calling her stupid etc complicit.

I don't really think it matters where a person's sympathies lie, they are allowed to protest without losing their job.

What might complicate this slightly is that he was in his workplace. So asking, if a driver was leading a protest about another political issue on the tube, would he be let go, seems a reasonable comparison to me

Agree with this. The issue isn't that he sympathises with the Palestinian people. The issue is using his workplace to protest about political issues.

That said, I think Dianne Abbott was very foolish to write that tweet.

Not so foolish that she restricted replies

legrandcolbert · 25/10/2023 05:27

Abbott isn't stupid, but she is spectacularly clumsy with her words.

Really though, this isn't about Abbott to all. It's about the fact tube isn't the place for anyone, particularly a member of staff to lead a 'free Palestine' chant.

lap90 · 25/10/2023 06:03

No, i don't think she does.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 25/10/2023 06:27

She is allowed an opinion.

All the innocent children and adults in this should live in peace and prosperity. I hope that everyone comes together to find a way that this can happen for all people in this conflict.

Completely agree. I am pro Palestine and for the 2 state solution and hugely critical of the way Israel treat the Palestinians. Of course I am horrified by what Hamas have done.

Sausagenbacon · 25/10/2023 07:12

The tube driver should be sacked for unprofessional behaviour.
DA has sometimes said stupid things (and this is one of them) but I believe she's a decent mp and it's a shame to see her vilified.

CwmYoy · 25/10/2023 07:15

Those who have been fooled into believing she wasn't wearing odd shoes should check out the analysis on Snopes.

Sausagenbacon · 25/10/2023 07:25

And I don't care if she was wearing odd shoes.

Who cares if she was?? I went on a nursing shift in odd shoes once - I was still a bloody good nurse!

Yep.

CurlewKate · 25/10/2023 08:00

She is not a member of the Labour Party. Supporting Palestine is not anti-semitic.

MyHornCanPierceTheSky · 25/10/2023 08:01

Awww just a forgivable whoopsie then? Must try harder, do you say the same for mps of the BNP?

Teddleshon · 25/10/2023 08:04

Yes she is no longer a member of the Labour Party following her grossly anti semitic letter to a newspaper in which she argued that Jewish people weren't in fact the victims of racism, just something like prejudice akin to that experienced by people with red hair.

CampsieGlamper · 25/10/2023 08:30

Has she been as supportive to the Ukrainians as she has been for Palestinians?

CwmYoy · 25/10/2023 08:58

MissyB1 · 25/10/2023 07:32

I don't care either. If she had laughed and copped it sweet I'd have admired her. I've done the same and laughed when I got to work.

It was her cronies trying to pretend it didn't happen and faking news that I found distasteful.
