To get DS Michael Jackson posters?

hijklmnke · 22/10/2023 23:05

I don't know if I'm being ridiculous.

DS is 5 and has semi-recently discovered Michael Jackson. Obsessed with his music, it's always on.

He has asked for me to get him some MJ posters to put up in his room.

I feel weird about it because of the allegations made against him.

AIBU to get them and put them up?

TBH I’m torn but I would let a child listen to the music

aSofaNearYou · 23/10/2023 08:21

I wouldn't get him posters, no.

Tempone · 23/10/2023 08:25

I must assume the people saying yes have not seen the neverland documentary. I was sick to my stomach after that and certainly wouldn't want the creepy fucker watching over my ds as he slept.

Yes, it is a serious question.

I will, ask you the same question I asked mrsterrypratchett.. Would you allow them a Carravagio print in their room?

This is a false equivalence. Having a Caravaggio print is the equivalent of listening to Michael Jackson’s music - both are the artistic output. If the child was idolising the person (so only wanted posters of a Caravaggio self-portrait), that would be equivalent.

TheNoodlesIncident · 23/10/2023 08:53

@hijklmnke What would you say to your son when in ten years time he asks why on earth you got him MJ posters to put up in his room when YOU knew what he didn't?

I would be rather upset if I found my parent hadn't steered me away from displaying the images of paedophiles. Admiring and enjoying their work is one thing, having their pictures on the walls... it would be a no from me.

NashvilleQueen · 23/10/2023 09:09

How weird that people don't think five year olds can be interested in music (or music from a different generation).

Only on MN could putting pictures of a child sex offender up on your child’s wall; be ok because he’s an artist innit. Don’t forget the Gary Glitter posters and Jim L Fix it medal.

This really. I think it's a bit weird that because people enjoy MJ's music they so are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt despite all the clear indications he was a paedophile. They will say, but he was never convicted of anything'. Well OJ got off with murder but there's few people who don't believe he did it. JS was never convicted either but again very few people don't accept that he was a paedophile because he was ugly and weird.

MJ wasn't ugly but he was weird. He admitted to sleeping with prepubescent boys although claimed it wasn't sexual. Hiding in plain sight but because people like his music they're willing to overlook his paedophilic tendencies.

I certainly wouldn't put up posters of a drug addled paedophile in my house.

I wouldn't. He gives me the heebie-jeebies and I couldn't look at them.

How is a small child 'discovering' his music anyway? Just switch the channel when a suspected pedophile and definite weirdo who emotionally abused children starts singing

This. He’s “discovering it” through you. Turn it off. Play him some EW&F instead 😃

Cant watch Lewis now either, eurgh. Shame, used to like it.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 23/10/2023 11:51

Music - ok, MJ is dead, so not making any money out of it.

Posters - no way.

APocketOfGooseFood · 23/10/2023 11:54

My point about Caravaggio was only a comment on the argument being used. The whole idea of a 5 year old wanting pop posters at all is weird, and having pictures of a child abuser is weirder, of course.

The OP is clearly wrong to be thinking about this. Imagine if she did it, and other kids came to play and went home to tell mummy and daddy that there are pictures of a man called Michael Jackson on the child’s walls? I could even imagine school taking an interest.

CaptainBarnaclesandthevegemals · 23/10/2023 11:58

No fucking way.
If you go ahead with the posters, your son will grow up, find out one day that Michael Jackson was a child abuser and then ask why you bought him posters of a paedophile for his bedroom.

Unicorn2022 · 23/10/2023 12:14

Of course not! He's 5 - why would you put any pop star posters in his room? I wouldn't put any posters in a young child's room - you need them to go to sleep and wake up in a tranquil environment, certainly not wake up to a dead, morally questionable pop star with a deformed face.

BeverleyMacker · 23/10/2023 12:18

No. I was a lifelong fan until a few years ago. Cant listen to him now. Binned all my merch I had got over the years. Still have a massive limited edition opus in the garage I need to shift. Guilty or not, everything is tainted now :(

RosaMoline · 23/10/2023 12:19

Does anyone on mumsnet think that MJ was innocent? Just interested. According to this thread, not one I’d say!

Oyen · 23/10/2023 12:25

How did your ds discover him? Is he grooming from beyond the grave perhaps?

Milarky · 23/10/2023 12:39

I'm more shocked that kids still put up posters of "pop stars"!!

My now teenagers never did, so I m only going by that.

Different in my day when it was all Smash Hit and Athena posters!

Mamette · 23/10/2023 18:24

My DC have posters of Mario. They saw them in a music shop and asked for them.

Not to mention the almighty fright you get when they fall down!

SweetFemaleAttitude · 22/10/2023 23:09

I couldn't and can't even listen to his music any more.

Yes they were not proved, but a man in his 30's/40's, hung out and had sleepovers with boys a little bit older than your ds and paid millions to make the allegations disappear.

It was all very strange and I just couldn't bring myself to spend money on his merchandise.

I might get flamed but this is a forum asking for opinions, and this is my opinion.

This is mine too . I would no longer listen to that than Gary Glitter

God, yes. I woke up with John Taylor on top of me many times in the eighties.

CurlewKate · 23/10/2023 18:57

I wouldn't. And I know a church that keeps some Eric Gill works covered. I think more people would care if more people had heard of him!

Rockbird · 23/10/2023 18:59

MJ aside, this nonsense that 5yos have no ideas about music is absurd. If I could be a Blondie fan from the age of 7 in 1979 (and still am at 52) when there was no internet, limited radio and tv then I'm sure it's not too hard for a 5yo today to see MJ. What sheltered worlds some of you live in.

Frankinbeans · 23/10/2023 19:32

It's almost as strange as the MJ tree of remembrance in Budapest. It's outside MJs favourite hotel and overlooks a children's playground. The tour guide was so proud of it.
