To get DS Michael Jackson posters?

hijklmnke · 22/10/2023 23:05

I don't know if I'm being ridiculous.

DS is 5 and has semi-recently discovered Michael Jackson. Obsessed with his music, it's always on.

He has asked for me to get him some MJ posters to put up in his room.

I feel weird about it because of the allegations made against him.

AIBU to get them and put them up?

A FIVE year old asked for Michael Jackson posters? Why? When did he even see him or hear him? He died 14 years ago, and would not be featured in any current music or kids magazines. And even if he was, a five year old wouldn't have them! His music is played still sometimes, but why on EARTH would a five year old ask for Michael Jackson posters? Confused

junbean · 22/10/2023 23:46

I too am put off by the obvious. I always turn the dial if his music comes on the radio. But when it comes to children who are too young to know about the abuse I would let them enjoy it. They'll find out eventually. I would get the posters. It won't hurt anything.

If my DD wanted his posters in her bedroom I'd make a fuss.

Would you be concerned if she wanted Carravagio prints on the wall?

In this age of connectivity you think his music isn't being played? I hear it all the time. It hasn't been banned and he still has a huge fan base. This is ridiculous.

Tambatamba · 22/10/2023 23:53

No. It’s perfectly obvious now that MJ was a pedophile who walked around with 12 year old boys, acting like he was dating them. Being found not guilty does not mean that you are innocent in a case like that. A poster would symbolise believing that this man was a role model. He wasn’t. And many radio stations don’t play his music as a result.

I have to say that what really, really bothers me about the sexual abuse the most is the blatant manipulation of these poor boys. They were so confused and so star struck, they believed that they were in love with MJ whilst the abuse was going on. He didn’t care about their feelings and would drop them like a hot potato in favour of whoever else had caught his eye. It’s utterly despicable and shows what a narcissist MJ was.

And a didgeridoo for good measure

To be fair, there's nothing wrong with the instrument itself - plenty of perfectly decent Australians have played it through the years.

It's a difficult one with MJ, though. At least with Gary Glitter, his music was mostly naff; but MJ was an amazingly talented musician and performer. Even so, the knowledge of what he did would stick in the craw for me - I can't say I would never listen to a song or two (hypocrite, I know), but certainly not affirming him as a person with posters or similar.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/10/2023 23:59

@VeniVidiWeeWee if she ever asks I will tell you. She's more of a Vermeer girl.

Your words. Read your own properly eh?

Well my dc, then aged 5 asked me to put MJ songs on you tube after hearing Bad on a Despicable Me film.

Yeah I know, it was just a joke

You're the MJ fan, aren't you...

No I'm really not. I enjoy a lot of his songs but I don't listen often and definitely wouldn't consider myself a fan.

His Granny showed him one of his music videos, since then he's been really into it.

He has Spider-Man posters up already, I don't understand what's so crazy about this?

I watched that documentary and I would certainly not be buying the poster.

vipersnest1 · 23/10/2023 00:38

He was a paedophile at worst, a child abuser at best - Google the incident of him dangling his baby over a hotel balcony if you don't believe me.
I can listen to his music, however brilliant he is supposed to be.

vipersnest1 · 23/10/2023 00:39

CAN'T listen to his music....

So you like his music. That's fine. Separate the art from the artist.

ElizaWinter · 23/10/2023 00:43

Nope. You have control and can make this 'obsession' disappear. Your child is 5 not 15. Is this a serious question?

Yes. I haven't watched the documentary or read into it too deeply - I will now.

He is still mainstream, most certainly not "cancelled". His music is still played on mainstream radio, he is still praised in the media as the greatest pop artist of all time etc. etc.

That is why I have this dilemma.

Yes, it is a serious question.

I will, ask you the same question I asked mrsterrypratchett.. Would you allow them a Carravagio print in their room?

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 23/10/2023 00:49

I realise that; just wanted to mention as an aside, as it could be very much culturally misinterpreted.

Now, if you'd said wobble board, I'd have been with you 100%!

DiscoBeat · 23/10/2023 00:58

At 5 you are able to filter what he sees and listens to. Just remove MJ from whatever devices you're using and steer him onto similar music. I would hate to see his face on my little boy's wall.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/10/2023 04:21

And Roman Polanski gets standing ovations. And Mike Tyson is a Hollywood star.

All it tells you is that women and children are disposable. Not that the people are OK.

DelphiniumBlue · 23/10/2023 04:51

How does a 5 year old even know about posters of MJ for his room? It's not a run of the mill thing for children that young to have posters of any musicians up, where is he getting this idea from?
Anyway, personally I'd say no, it's not necessary or appropriate.
