Why are there so many single parents

Nowhereqw · 22/10/2023 19:35

Don't mean to offend anyone but I am new to UK and noticed there are so many single parents.
I am from Asia and most families I know have two parents so I am just curious about it.

Because…men.

Wingingit11 · 22/10/2023 20:06

There is no one answer to this. Some people decide to finish a relationship, others have it taken out of their hands (so the divorce stat above is also a bit misleading potentially too as doesn’t reflect necessarily who ended the actual relationship).I would say , as a divorcee, it’s incredibly easy to divorce - made me feel marriage is quite worthless and disposable nowadays.

I don't think it's a problem specific to the UK tbh

A problem?

It isn't 'a problem' at all.

Preferable for most women.

Starseeking · 22/10/2023 20:07

Because it's socially acceptable for a woman in the UK to have no man, than to carry a complete arsehole who treats them like rubbish.

Good on them for valuing themselves, and showing their DC a better example.

TheHateIsNotGood · 22/10/2023 20:08

Curious OP - from what Country have you come from please? It might help many PPs here understand why you have noticed this part of UK society.

AmazingSnakeHead · 22/10/2023 20:08

genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely genuinely just curious.

Because men can just walk away from their families without any penalty and just leave you to it. That's how I ended up as a lone parent, not single, completely lone. This is because he not only left our marriage, he abandoned our child too. It's perfectly ok to do that apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️

arethereanyleftatall · 22/10/2023 20:10

I've seen that stat - women initiate 63% of divorces - and no way is it actually that low. Probably more like 95 % even if on some occasions, it's the men that press the button after being requested to by their stbex.

Because we realised just how useless men are, can parent better and live happier, healthier lives without them.

Nowhereqw · 22/10/2023 20:12

Fair enough and I understand most of the reasons stated.

Because we eat all the men after we mate with them.

Cheaper than turnips.

Excellent 🤣😆🤣😆

alrighthen · 22/10/2023 20:16

I think there’s more pressure on men to be good family men in Asian societies (I think
thats a good thing)

And less social stigma about leaving bad relationships in the UK (also a good thing)

We’re also a secular country so there’s little shame in divorce if a couple is married. I’d go as far as to say marriage isn’t as important here.

I’m not married (though I am very well protected legally) and I just don’t value it as an important or sacred institution when half of people end up divorced! I think it’s a much bigger deal in other more conservative countries where breaking up is a much bigger deal.

To add, I’m not a single parent and big respect to those who are.

Legoandloldolls · 22/10/2023 20:17

My Thai sil is very happy to stay in Thailand while he dh works all over the world. He used to be a massive, massive player. Not sure if he still is but his current wife timeline was when we was told he was still married. It's a different culture. No British woman would put up such a serial shagger.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/10/2023 20:17

Igotjelly · 22/10/2023 19:39

Because many relationships are unhappy and thankfully we live in a society where you don’t have to put up with that shit, regardless of whether there are kids involved.

This.

Blueeyedmale · 22/10/2023 20:18

Op there are a number of reasons for this some reasons men can't take responsibility for their children, domestic violence, bereavement, adultery but to say single parents are not common in Asian countries I very much disagree it's very common in the Philippines,in Japan and South Korea to some extent

FannyBawz · 22/10/2023 20:19

Because men are shameless bastards and there’s no sanction for being a crap dad or husband. No pressure or expectation to step up. Many women have had enough of this crap and fair play to them all.

MariaLuna · 22/10/2023 20:20

You sound hugely naive to cultural differences around the world OP @Nowhereqw

Hopefully, now you are in the UK you can learn about women not taking no more shit from misogynistic men.

I last read that even women in some Asian countries do not see family life as something to strive for.

My husband had cancer and died. I’m not a solo parent by choice.

Because CSA and benefits. 💷💷💷💷

Not every single parent lives on benefits. I didn't and I didn't get maintenance either.

coodawoodashooda · 22/10/2023 20:21

StopStartStop · 22/10/2023 19:40

😂
Because a lot of men are nasty, cruel, adulterous bastards and women are not obliged to put up with it.

No point beating about the bush.

And it's too difficult to make them accountable.

alrighthen · 22/10/2023 20:21

Just noticed you said Sri Lanka. I remember reading somewhere that divorce rates are very very low in Sri Lanka - even by Asian standards.

Blahahahah · 22/10/2023 20:22

Single parents can afford to leave marriages in the UK either by means of benefits or by having their own income, would you say that is the same in Sri Lanka?

Mydogmybestfriend · 22/10/2023 20:22

Sometimes men leave women when promising to be there or men die, it's not always because the woman can't keep her legs closed contrary to popular belief.

DomPom47 · 22/10/2023 20:22

Social attitudes here are different to parts of Asian.
If there were an anonymous survey in Asian about separation or divorce the number of people saying they would like to separate or divorce or like the idea of may be as high as the UK. Cultural and religious stigma make the numbers lower in Asian.
