What’s the most ridiculous price that someone has offered you?

Currently selling a pushchair for £70. It was used for less than a year as I got pregnant again and had to purchase a double buggy, so it’s in great condition!

Guess how much someone offered to purchase it for? £15😂 like really? Come on now.

It just made me think, what’s the silliest price someone has offered to pay when you’ve tried to sell something?

That seems about the value of a second hand pram tbh. They don’t hold their value at all, I’d assume your £70 was a typo

This is absolutely ridiculous.. majority of second hand prams I see are about 200quid

PinkMoscatoLover · 22/10/2023 19:43

Thank you and that was exactly my point. £15 when someone is asking for £70 doesn’t make any sense

It makes sense if the item is only worth £15. It might be the asking price that is ridiculous, not the offer. Not saying it is necessarily true in your case, but you do see some sellers asking absolutely silly prices for things.

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Sellers are free to ask what they want, and buyers are free to offer what they want.

DyslexicPoster · 22/10/2023 19:58

Someone was selling a travel cot locally for £5. Someone offered £1.50. Someone else said that was a piss take. Then all hell broke loose. That was embarrassing. I was shocked that someone would get so shitty and expect something for £1.50 after declaring that would beat the shit out of Someone "ok yes please here's my address you deranged psycho"

I see lots of people saying on all kinds of things ( normally luxury items like bigger houses, luxury cars" I will give you £500, you won't get a better offer so you might as well just take my offer now" on a five year Range Rover or offering £250 for a room in a city centre close to London. "No one will pay that for a double bedroom onsuite in a family five bed house, with parking, five mins walk to station, all utilities included your taking the piss. I will do you a favour and make it £50 per month but I need you to all move out as well. You won't get a better offer"

The advertised price is meaningless. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Where i live people put things on buy sell pages with deluded asking prices! £10 for a pair of battered looking school shoes "with plenty of wear left". £50 for junky plastic kids toys with pieces missing. £3-4 each for toddler board books.

I gave away a pram system i paid £800 new for free, I'm not the only one to do this, some people don't mind the money they get they just want to pass something on and have it re-used.

Slow clap for you but guess what? I need the money otherwise I wouldn’t be selling it would I? Not sure if it makes you feel better for saying that you gave a £800 buggy away for free but that’s great for you

*Had an item advertised at £250. Had the following conversation with a random:

Them: what’s lowest you’ll take?
me: £250
Them: £100?
me: £250

A week later…
Them: Will you take £125?
Me: £250

Another week later…
Them: What’s lowest you’ll go to?
Me: £250*

So you hadn't managed to sell it after 2 weeks? Lots of people would want the money & accept a much lower offer if something isn't selling.

Not everyone needs to sell their item with urgency. I'd rather keep the item and re-list it at a later date rather than give it away at a knockdown price.

The point being, there are sellers out there who don't care what it goes for. So a buyer has nothing to lose asking for less. They need to save the money as much as you need to make it.

Where i live generally its a buyers market. You can't give stuff away, no one will collect it, and people will pay very little for most second hand goods.

Hana89 · 22/10/2023 20:03

Vinted is my favourite app but it absolutely raises my blood pressure sometimes 🤣
I try to pass my daughter's outgrown baby clothes on at bargain prices and the main thing is that they get worn and loved again, but it does drive me bonkers when I put something in perfect condition up for, say, £1.50 and someone will offer £1.20 - obviously it's fine, but it's 30p for goodness sake! Just buy the thing!

ADifferentMe · 22/10/2023 20:04

I used to restore/reupholster French beds. I sold them for around £200. I had one person asking if she could have one free as she didn't have a bed and another wanting to borrow it free of charge for a photo shoot.

I declined.

Maybe re read your comment? You said, ‘I gave away a pram system i paid £800 new for free, I'm not the only one to do this, some people don't mind the money they get they just want to pass something on and have it re-used.’ As if that makes you a better person for not choosing to sell the buggy. Again, that’s great for you

Haha yep this has been my experience when selling some things on Vinted. I guess some people want to feel like they’ve got even more of a bargain even if it’s only 30p😂

Where did you give away the pram system? If Facebook/free cycle or Gumtree, then more fool you. It was more than likely taken by someone who immediately resold it for a big profit.

Zooeyzo · 22/10/2023 20:07

It was definitely easier to get good prices around lockdown time. I sold a buggy the same price I bought it at (I bought it used). Had lots of interest too.
Nowadays I usually find no responses or cheeky offers like you got.

mishmased · 22/10/2023 20:09

@Grapewrath that's amazing! I'd have loved to see the look on the other lady's face.

BananaPalm · 22/10/2023 20:10

What platform were you selling it at OP?

I usually get this sort of idiotic offers on Gumtree. I don't even bother to reply.

Also, the "text speak" of some people! Lots of "where r u?" or "£5 plz?". I mean... have some minimal respect for others 🤦🏻‍♀️

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/10/2023 20:11

I was selling a child's bike for £10. Someone got in touch and said they'd like it. Came round at the appointed time and said "I want it but don't have the money on me at the moment". I said OK, come back tomorrow I'll still be here. He came back the next day with £9.70 in coins. Pathetic but of course I let him have it. Hope he's still re-living that 30p victory.

Zooeyzo · 22/10/2023 20:13

@Doris86 yes thats very true. The local fb reuse site always has a couple of people upset they saw their item on marketplace. Then you get the people offering a item but then adding: only for people in need or strictly not to be sold on...I mean which scammer is going to think oh no better not take that one then.

Guibhyl · 22/10/2023 20:18

Not a cheeky price but someone on Vinted was selling a (not cheap) high end baby item and it was listed as brand new without tags but the picture looked like the item was quite worn. I enquired about it and asked if the item had been used and she said “yes but only for about 8 months”. This is an item that would be used several times a week 😂 so over 8 months would probably have been used at least 30+ times. She asked if I wanted it and I politely declined (it was not well priced considering the amount of use), I said I would pass thank you and I had enquired as it had been listed as new without tags. I assumed she had just clicked the wrong option by mistake. But no, she replied and said “but it’s in very good condition with no faults and thats what new without tags means”. I replied and said no I don’t think that’s what it means, it means you’ve taken the tags off, and maybe prewashed it, but never used it. Otherwise it’s not new?! So basically she was trying to claim that an item that has been used multiple times over several months can be sold as “new without tags” just because it’s not got holes or stains 🤔

I was selling a piece of furniture for £20 and had a message from someone asking if I'd deliver to a place in Wales. I replied saying sorry I'm not posting and got back 'can you drop it off'. So I replied again saying you must have got my location mixed up, I'm in Suffolk and roughly 5 hours from Wales, I got back 'yes I know that, it was worth asking' Confused was baffled that someone thought they actually had a chance that I'd do a 10 hour round trip for £20! Was just a bog standard side board too

This is the best! You'll have to pay £££ in petrol/diesel to make a £20 sale. Beyond the realms of unbelievable 😂

Doris86 · 22/10/2023 20:18

I once sold something on E bay, and the bidding went up to £19.80. The buyer came to collect it , didn’t have the right change, and handed me a £20 note. Any normal person would have immediately said, don’t worry about it. But this plonker stood there for a good 2-3 minutes whilst I searched the house, until I managed to find a 20p piece.

CatchHimDerry · 22/10/2023 20:19

Can’t believe the replies saying prams worth bugger all 😂 really? Not where I am, they sell for a fair price of it’s original value if in good condition.

I have bought and sold online for years to make a few extra pennies and heard it all.

Most memorable ones were FB a few years ago was selling my old engagement ring… somebody managed to turn that conversation around into “So… do you like being tied up?” 🤔 Bounced outta there a bit sharpish

More recently selling a few tonnes worth of original wrought iron fencing. Worth a lot just as scrap but they don’t make fences like this any more.
Put it on cheap for a quick sale with buyer to collect and bring help for carrying.
The amount of people I had wanting me to deliver this TONNES IN WEIGHT fence to them was baffling. They all got so mad when I said no can do

Lovely chap bought it all and collected a week later

notacooldad · 22/10/2023 19:20

The lowest I would have sold the buggy for would have been £55
What would you have done with buggy if it didn't sell for that.

I think we've discovered who offered 10p for a handbag....🙄

CatchHimDerry · 22/10/2023 20:24

@BananaPalm This. This drives me batty, the lack of manners / basic courtesy

You’ll have something for £10 maybe and get a message …”£1”.

No “Hi”, “would you consider” or “please” to be found

Mydogmybestfriend · 22/10/2023 20:25

Advertised a car for 6700 was offered 4700

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/10/2023 20:26

To add: I live in a typical area of London where some people are absolutely loaded and some are on the bones of their arse. This is what it can be like within the same postcode of London, unless you're in Belgravia or Marylebone or somewhere like that.

So we have some people trying to sell bundles of baby clothes for £10 because they need the money and some people giving away expensive items like dishwashers and fridge/freezers for free because they're ripping out their almost new kitchen and just want it out of the house. I wish they stick to the free sites and not create this imbalance.

Guibhyl · 22/10/2023 20:29

Oh also I tried to give away a buggy for free on a local group and a woman got in touch saying that she’d take it off me and try to sell it and then donate the money to charity. Lol. I’m obviously not going to believe that. I’d prefer it if she’d just kept quiet and taken the buggy and then tried to sell it on for money which she’s obviously planning on keeping for herself. But pretending she was randomly going to go out of her way to come and collect a free buggy and then try to sell it and donate the money? No thanks. I assume she told me that she was going to be “selling it on for charity” because she was planning on listing it on marketplace and there was a risk I’d then see it when she was trying to make money off my generosity.

I just replied and said no sorry I’d like to give it to someone who needs to use it themselves.
