What’s the most ridiculous price that someone has offered you?

Currently selling a pushchair for £70. It was used for less than a year as I got pregnant again and had to purchase a double buggy, so it’s in great condition!

Guess how much someone offered to purchase it for? £15😂 like really? Come on now.

It just made me think, what’s the silliest price someone has offered to pay when you’ve tried to sell something?

I offered something free online, someone asked if I could deliver to them 15 miles away.
Offered a bag of fabric offcuts someone asked me to send the measurements of each piece.

I offered a chair for free on Freecycle. I got asked by one person, who said they were interested, what I could do to sweeten the deal. I pointed out it was free, and they said could I throw something else in to sweeten the deal. I said how about I throw in that the chair will cost you £20.... Never heard back from them. Lol.

Wtf! It was free, how did it need 'sweetening?'!

aprilshowers2015 · 22/10/2023 19:29

I've started overpricing items just to get them sold tbh.
We did have a good one recently. Posted some building material for £30 and was immediately offered £20, refused. They then said they would pay full price but could I deliver, no. While they were "sorting transport" I had another 10 messages or so come through so I binned the buyer off, asked everyone for their best price and sold it for £70! Only happened once but I live in hope.

iPhone 13 mini, I desperately needed the money for the dogs vet bill. Low price anyway £130 was offered £10 and to meet 12am her back of the local Asda. I did not go

Omg 😂😂😂

That seems about the value of a second hand pram tbh. They don’t hold their value at all, I’d assume your £70 was a typo

Some do - depends on the brand.

PlasticineKing · 22/10/2023 19:33

I can’t believe posters here are justifying someone offering so much under. It’s absolutely cheeky - that’s nearly 80% less than OP was asking for. The height of entitlement. If they’re £15 in a charity shop then they can get one there can’t they.

TroysMammy · 22/10/2023 19:36

I bought a unbuilt dolls house with extension which was advertised at £100. I paid £100 for it because I knew how much it cost when originally bought and it has now been discontinued. It is only missing a front door and I can easily get one of those for under £10.

I brought a brand new sofa in Sept 22,we downsized from a 3 bed to a 2 bed in July and the sofa wouldn't fit so I had to advertise it on FB marketplace,I advertised it for £300 for a quick sale so I could get a smaller one,it was spotless and in mint condition.Somebody offered me £50 for it,said they had no money and would I consider £50.I declined as politely as I could!

Sexnotgender · 22/10/2023 19:39

Was selling a brand new Mulberry Bayswater a few years ago for about £500. CF (obviously a reseller looking at their profile) sent me a really snotty message saying I’d never get that for it and he’d do me a favour and take it off my hands for £150.

Revenants · 22/10/2023 19:42

Three children's bicycles, top spec, all in great condition, serviced regularly etc, all tyres in great condition. Advertised as a lot or individually for a total price of £400. Really could have got more, but we like things being put to good use.

Phones goes crazy that afternoon and first caller a woman says she will be round after work but travelling from regional city some 35 miles away so will be evening. Gets here, in posh SUV, well dressed, expensive leather boots, really loves the bikes but offers £250 for them. I explain that £400 is the price and I never horse trade, had two other local callers. She ums and ahs for 15 minutes over a cup of tea I made her, criticising the bikes paintwork, moans about the puddles in our yard (?), and we get to £350. I am bemused to say the least at her tenacity. But I am not going to budge for her sheer cheek. We are finally stuck at £380, then she gets in her BMW X5 and drives back home to big city.

Next morning a man in his van with a small boy turn up, love the bikes he pays £400 with no price trading. First for me to be honest, so I give him two scooters and a boys radio controlled digger for free.

I had a Diamond and Emerald ring, advertised at £1700.
Obviously not baby goods or something that could be described as an essential.
Had a CF contact me and say that if it didn't sell, they would take it off my hands (probably literally) for me, but couldn't pay anything as they were skint.
Yeah mate that's why I was selling it, to raise funds for a new central heating boiler.

I think if someone is selling something for £70, to offer £15 is ridiculous. Whether the item is worth £70 is a matter of opinion but if the seller wants £70, they wont sell for £15.

Thank you and that was exactly my point. £15 when someone is asking for £70 doesn’t make any sense

😂 I think people like this genuinely believe that they’re helping out so you may as well just sell it to them. £150 is madness!

When we sold our last house. It had been on the market for two days when we had our first viewer. He came and spent an hour, then back a second time with wife and kids. A third viewing with wife, kids, and parents. Said he was very interested and would be back with an offer to the EA. About an hour later he put in the offer - £60,000 below the asking price !!

ManchesterLu · 22/10/2023 19:48

Me and DP run a business and part of that business includes an eBay store. You wouldn't believe the messages we get. Just the other day we got a 'will you accept £10' when the item is on sale for £50, down from £75. We said no sorry, our prices are set as shown online, and they replied who do you think you are, Argos? I mean, no we're not Argos, but we're still a business that needs to keep afloat! We get plenty of sales, so our prices are unreasonable and include free postage. Some people just want everything for free.

UdderlyPumpkin · 22/10/2023 19:48

If I list something for £1.50 on Vinted someone will always offer £1!

AfterWeights · 22/10/2023 19:49

The advertised price is meaningless. An item is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Where i live people put things on buy sell pages with deluded asking prices! £10 for a pair of battered looking school shoes "with plenty of wear left". £50 for junky plastic kids toys with pieces missing. £3-4 each for toddler board books.

I gave away a pram system i paid £800 new for free, I'm not the only one to do this, some people don't mind the money they get they just want to pass something on and have it re-used.

Weddingpuzzle · 22/10/2023 19:52

People saying 'Don't donate, stick it on Vinted for £1' shows you probably don't sell on Vinted. Wrapping stuff up and then getting it to the Evri shop to post it just isn't worth a quid. I'd rather donate it. Vinted is ridiculous for CF's. I just reject all offers now - stuff might take longer to sell but it goes eventually.

I sold a wooden Wendy House on FB marketplace, agreed a price of £50 with a mum I loosely knew from school and even dropped it off for her. She handed me the notes folded up and I didn't check until I got home and she'd given me £40. I will judge her forever for that tightwaddery!

They want you to give them a free diamond ring? In case it has been weighing you down, or taking up too much space in the house? 🤣

There was somebody on here a few months ago who did give her pram away for free, after the buyer gave her some sob story about being abandoned by her boyfriend 8 months pregnant and not having anything ready. Poster discovered later the woman had immediately re-listed it, and basically ran a thriving second hand pram business on FB marketplace.

Alargeoneplease89 · 22/10/2023 19:52

Was selling a computer monitor- had a fault but easily repairable to someone who knows what they are doing. Others were listed for £60 with that fault so copied the other listing.... someone offered to take it off my hands because no one is going to buy that and I get to cover the postage too!

  • it sold for the asking price the next day.
AfterWeights · 22/10/2023 19:53

*Had an item advertised at £250. Had the following conversation with a random:

Them: what’s lowest you’ll take?
me: £250
Them: £100?
me: £250

A week later…
Them: Will you take £125?
Me: £250

Another week later…
Them: What’s lowest you’ll go to?
Me: £250*

So you hadn't managed to sell it after 2 weeks? Lots of people would want the money & accept a much lower offer if something isn't selling.

Saschka · 22/10/2023 19:56

God, I would totally do that by accident. I’d miscount the notes, or count both sides of a note folded in half. It’s the kind of thing that gives me nightmares if I have to hand over large amounts of cash. I had to pay a rental deposit in notes (it was about $1800), and it was so stressful wondering if I’d dropped a note somehow on my way from the bank!

😂🫣 comparing your business to Argos is so unnecessary. I do find that some people think that because they’re not making a purchase from a big business that they should be able to haggle and pay any price they want
