To think this isn't a normal show for a 14 year old girl to be interested in?

My niece has taken interest in this show recently, its not exactly innapropriate but aibu to wonder why she's interested in it?

The show is This is Us, from what i can tell it's made for adults and isn't advertised to teenagers at all. I thought most girls that age were watching Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars (I know my slightly younger dd is.) I'm not bothered that she watches the show I'm just wondering why shes interested 😂

Asked my sister why her daughter was watching a show meant for 30-somethings and she got annoyed, am I completely out of touch and unreasonable?

I think its great she is watching this instead of other rubbish targeted at teenagers. It tackles so many real life issues, it will get her thinking about these at a young age.

I think you have a very limited view OP, so what if you wouldn't have been into it at that age. Are people not all individuals? I'd be interested to know how you categorise a 'normal' 25 Yr old, 35, 45 etc.

LynetteScavo · 22/10/2023 09:55

It's a brilliant show- I started watching it when I was ill- it wasn't challenging, so I can see why a 14 yo would enjoy it. I did cry a lot though, as there are lots of touching parts. It's very cleverly done. I binged watched until the last one, and I'm not a binge watcher usually.

LynetteScavo · 22/10/2023 09:57

So yes, YABU - it's a very "normal" series for a14yo girl to want to watch.

LynetteScavo · 22/10/2023 09:57

she probably fancies Kevin

mooncloud1 · 22/10/2023 10:02

Ha! At that age I used to watch shows like Peak Practice, London's Burning, Casualty etc hardly unusual!
New flash OP, people like different things.

Yes, those Clan of the Cave Bear books were quite eye-opening.

I also loved House of Cards, and a lot of the Masterpiece Theater productions.

I do think there is more dumbing down now for kids in what they read. A lot of teen books, in particular, are full of sex, but often the stories and the writing are simplistic and shallow.

With tv in particular they don't seem to have the attention span for anything with a lot of dialogue or complicated plot plotting.

It's a little sad.

I agree with the dumbing down, I’ve read a wide range of modern teen and young adult fiction (my dds keep insisting😂) and it’s so different now.

i work in a school (nothing exciting, I’m the cleaner) but i clean the library and i can borrow books. I had a look at the books they have, there is nothing really hardcore anymore, no Stephen kings, no Jean M Auel, no books that you would class as gritty adult lit and it’s a shame.

my 13 year old dd had a book taken from her and threatened with detention because she took a book from the young adult section to read that was deemed unsuitable, everything seems so sanitised and safe.

reading challenging, well written and thought provoking books as a child really did give me a good grounding and a good moral compass, and an open mind as an adult and it’s something that’s lacking in a lot of young people now.

we had William Horwoods Duncton Wood series too and I read all those at 13, fantastic books, you wouldn’t get those in a school library these days!

The things I watched at 14 varied.

BTVS
Charmed
Bewitched
I Love Lucy
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Alfred Hitchcock
The Twilight Zone
Leave it to Beaver
ER
Felicity
Friends
Girlfriends
Living Single
Law and Order SVU
Strangers with Candy
Roswell
That’s 70 Show
Will and Grace
My Wife and Kids
The Cosby Show
Family Matters
Inuyasha
Yug-i-oh
The Simpsons
Family Guy
Futurama
Chicago Hope
Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Boy meets World
Jack of All Trades
Xena: Warrior Princess
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
Relic Hunter

Lots of Lifetime movies and morning talk shows which made me very mindful of relationships and dynamics that I would have not likely learned about from my own parents, such as the different types of abusive relationships other than physical.

Blarn · 22/10/2023 11:27

I was watching Sex and the City at 14/15 when it first aired on C4 in 98, definitely not for young teens! Queer as Folk too. Surely that's part if being a teen, discovering adult things?

I love This is us, my 14 year old son has watched a few episodes with me, but it's not his thing (I'm always crying), I see no problem with a teenager wanting to watch it and enjoying it.

I started it and loved it but I'm a crying mess during every episode so I have to stop. Shame. It's a lovely drama about life and family, just my cup of tea but my heart can't take it.

Teens like different things...shocker! My teen daughter would have no interest at all in Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars and thankfully doesn't watch shows just because that's what some narrow minded people think she 'should' be watching them. 🙄

I'm not surprised your sister got annoyed if you asked the question in that way, you probably came across to her as unpleasant as you are on here.

dancingqueef · 22/10/2023 18:00

People on here are so touchy wtf 😂🙄

This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I would feel fairly comfortable for my 14 year old child to watch it.

All2Well · 22/10/2023 18:03

Only because you come across as pretty mean and rude towards your niece @dancingqueef

dancingqueef · 22/10/2023 18:13

I don't see how it's rude to personally find something odd. Also the show does include nudity which isn't exactly appropriate for a 14 year old girl

this is an incredible show - anyone who hasn’t watched it needs to. It’s such a beautiful show that puts you through every emotion.

Mummyexpat · 22/10/2023 18:40

On IMDb, Riverdale is classified as a 15 whereas This Is Us is a 12…so age-wise This Is Us is more appropriate.

And showing an inappropriate teacher and student relationship including making out in the back of a car is appropriate for a 14 yo girl?

HerMammy · 22/10/2023 18:50

I think your talking about your niece as if she's 8/9, nudity won't be a shock to her.

SnappyMcMuffin · 22/10/2023 18:50

What an odd post! My teenagers (now adults) loved 'Casualty' from the age of about 9!!

Quartz2208 · 22/10/2023 20:00

I’ve tried Riverdale with DD didn’t get into it, didn’t get into This is us either but wouldn’t judge anyone for liking it, different strokes for different folks.

DH and I like some of the sane stuff and have other stufff we watch separately it’s not that odd.

DD likes Gilmore Girls and I can’t watch it with her, loved Jess (who is of course in this is us) then and still do now (reason tried this is us) but far too young in Gilmore girls

Yeah, everyone else is the problem OP. 😅

whynotwhatknot · 22/10/2023 20:37

I really dont get your point op

Dotcheck · 22/10/2023 23:13

Nudity?
When?

OP you must have very low opinions of teens if you don’t think they can enjoy a good drama

AliMonkey · 22/10/2023 23:18

The odd bit of nudity is a lot more appropriate for a teen than the suicides of Riverdale.

dancingqueef · 22/10/2023 23:37

Milo ventimiglia's naked arse. Completely innapropriate for a 14 year old imo
