To think this isn't a normal show for a 14 year old girl to be interested in?

My niece has taken interest in this show recently, its not exactly innapropriate but aibu to wonder why she's interested in it?

The show is This is Us, from what i can tell it's made for adults and isn't advertised to teenagers at all. I thought most girls that age were watching Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars (I know my slightly younger dd is.) I'm not bothered that she watches the show I'm just wondering why shes interested 😂

Asked my sister why her daughter was watching a show meant for 30-somethings and she got annoyed, am I completely out of touch and unreasonable?

What your niece watches on tv is none of your never mind.
I’d think that would be common sense.

I remember my great-aunts having a tizzy that I was wearing a bit of mascara when I was 15. They were all born in the 1890s.
My mum laughed and told them “I gave her permission.” They didn’t like it one bit. I suspect they thought mascara and permissive mothers were for “the Presbyterians.”

Can you reccomend The Marvelous Mrs Maisel to her as well if she's on Prime Grin

ValleyClouds · 21/10/2023 22:02

YABU for being so judgy- like a "Cool Girl" finding your niece "wanting" or weird. It's not a good look.

FastFood · 21/10/2023 22:03

At that age, I was a fan of the X Files and Tour of Duty.
Your niece will be fine.

Sparklesocks · 21/10/2023 22:04

Teens are interested in all sorts of media, not just stuff that’s made specifically for them.

Cas112 · 21/10/2023 22:11

What has it got to do with you? And to put a thread on it? Haha

I have started rewatching so many shows that I used to watch as a young teen in the late 90s early 00s (Friends, Desperate Housewives, Girlfriends...) - back then there were limited choices.

I realised that I wouldn't let my young tween watch any of these shows now! I find the content so adult - but I remember loving it then, but as a grown up thinking "what grown-up topics".

We don't know why - often a teen might take something different from a show than a 30 year old - but we all have our preferences.

namestevalian · 21/10/2023 22:17

It's an amazing show !

GladysHeeler · 21/10/2023 22:18

I'd have thought it was a perfectly normal programme. It's just a programme about a family.

TodayForTomorrow · 21/10/2023 22:18

I loved nothing more than an early Sunday night watching Poirot when I was her age.

This Is Us is really good. There's nothing wierd about her liking it.

It might not be the most usual show for a 14 year old girl to like but there's nothing inappropriate on it, people like what they like.

I used to love Star Gate as a teenager and my 7 year old loves home makeover shows on Netflix (tiny house nation is his favourite).

tiny house nation is his favourite

Maybe he is getting ideas for his playhouse/den/treehouse?

lottiegarbanzo · 21/10/2023 22:22

I watched all sorts of adult films and dramas at that age. What are you talking about? Why so keen to restrict everyone to neat little boxes? Intelligent, curious people live as stereotypes.

lottiegarbanzo · 21/10/2023 22:22

Hah! 'Don't live as stereotypes'

Notmytotoro · 21/10/2023 22:23

You sound very judgemental. When I was teenager I watched Frasier, Friends, ER...

WhatFlavourIsIt · 21/10/2023 22:26

I think you questioning her perfectly normal & reasonable viewing choices is way more odd. Mind your business.

whynotwhatknot · 21/10/2023 22:27

i watched moonlighting when i was 13 and la law -they werent aimed at me still love moonlighting

Avatartar · 21/10/2023 22:27

She probably fancies Kevin! It’s a great show

Cuthbertsrevenge · 21/10/2023 22:29

Never seen Riverdale so can’t comment on that but Pretty Little Liars is absolute garbage television and This is Us is an absolute masterpiece by comparison.

Either way, the fact you a) care and b) care enough to create a post about it is really, really odd.

SnobblyBobbly · 21/10/2023 22:30

Eh? Why would this even warrant a comment? Sorry but it comes across as a bit judgy OP.

Not everything needs to be commented on.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/10/2023 22:31

I was watching the Golden Girls when I was 14 so it seems fine to me.

Welshwabbit · 21/10/2023 22:33

Gawd. I remember watching the original UK House of Cards when I was 11. That was very definitely unsuitable. I loved it.

You might think that. I couldn’t possibly say.

frenchfries111 · 21/10/2023 22:43

I watched ‘30-Something’ which came out when I was 14.

DinaofCloud9 · 21/10/2023 22:45

This is US is fairly normal isn't it? It's not exactly a weird show for teens.

SkyTree · 21/10/2023 22:47

Honestly, I wouldn’t want my 14 year old watching Pretty Little Liars without a robust conversation first. It completely normalises and celebrates teacher/student relationships.
