To think this isn't a normal show for a 14 year old girl to be interested in?

My niece has taken interest in this show recently, its not exactly innapropriate but aibu to wonder why she's interested in it?

The show is This is Us, from what i can tell it's made for adults and isn't advertised to teenagers at all. I thought most girls that age were watching Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars (I know my slightly younger dd is.) I'm not bothered that she watches the show I'm just wondering why shes interested 😂

Asked my sister why her daughter was watching a show meant for 30-somethings and she got annoyed, am I completely out of touch and unreasonable?

So pretty little liars age rating is11+, river dale and this is us both 14+ so there is no difference

why is this an issue personally found all 3 dullbut wouldn’t judge nyone

Glassofwino · 22/10/2023 00:36

riverdale is defo worse imo! Very scary and lots of adult themes throughout as the series progress! This is us is more based around real life, maybe a little boring for some 14 yo but maybe interesting for others?

SapphireSeptember · 22/10/2023 00:39

Well, I was 12 when I started watching crime dramas (Messiah was pretty gruesome, and there was Waking The Dead, Silent Witness, Murder In Mind and the earliest CSI episodes.) Probably not aimed at 12 year old girls, but I bloody enjoyed them. I also remember watching The World At War at stupid 'o' clock in the morning when I was even younger, and that had some rather disturbing images of things that actually happened.

Welshwabbit · 21/10/2023 22:33

Gawd. I remember watching the original UK House of Cards when I was 11. That was very definitely unsuitable. I loved it.

I remember watching Bouquet of Barbed Wire as a 10 year old in the 80s with my mum 😳

OP This is Us is a fantastic show, well written and good characters.

Geppili · 22/10/2023 00:43

Do you have kids? Why are you so invested in interfering with your niece?

Saschka · 22/10/2023 00:52

God, at that age I loved Our Friends in the North, Band of Gold, This Life. Oh and US shows like X files, Murder One, NYPD Blue.

None of those are really kids show either. Most teen shows are pretty crap, honestly. Why wouldn’t she want to watch normal television at 14?

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 22/10/2023 00:59

This Is Us is a very bland show. I wouldn't think most adults would find it challenging or over stimulating. I'd imagine it's quite suitable for teenage girls.

Graciebobcat · 22/10/2023 00:59

I strategically avoided most things which had a whiff of being made for me, when I was a teenager. I used to like watching soaps and cheesy mini series then, and would stay up late with my mum watching repeats of Prisoner Cell Block H. Quite liked things that were not about teenagers and not even my era/time zone.

user1477391263 · 22/10/2023 01:03

I thought this was going to be about something pornographic or a YouTube series about how to make your own bomb or something.

I think it’s great that she’s interested in watching programs that adults watch.

Lavender14 · 22/10/2023 01:03

You seem to have an idea that teenage girls are limited in what they can be interested in. I love this is us, its very human, it is a real coming of age story for all ages so I think it makes sense that there would be an overlap of enjoyment from adults and teens. It's a brilliant show that tackles a lot of real issues very well. It's strange you'd judge her for that.

Saschka · 22/10/2023 01:05

In fact our entire class stayed up to watch Murder on the Moon in 1989 - we would have been 9. Totally, wildly inappropriate.

I was also watching Casualty aged 7, back when it involved children blending their hands off, toddlers electrocuting themselves by sticking forks in plug sockets, and various other horrors. I am slightly embarrassed to admit that it was Beth Ramanee who originally made me want to be a doctor 🤣

dancingqueef · 22/10/2023 01:39

This is what I mean, if I was 14 watching it I'd be bored out of my skull and i don't know why it appeals to dn so much 😂im not offended that she watches it I just think it's a bit odd

Meant that as a reply to @Glassofwino

No offence, but do you think perhaps you were a different type of 14 year old to your niece? The majority of people on this thread can see why this programme appeals to her. You're the exception...

Saschka · 22/10/2023 01:58

Look, I never understood what anyone saw in Inspector Morse, but I didn’t start a thread every time somebody I knew said they liked it.

Different people like different stuff on TV🤷‍♀️

Rudderneck · 22/10/2023 02:47

I have no idea about the show. But when I was growing up in the 80's, it was totally normal for teenagers, and even younger kids, to watch tv shows that had been written mainly for adults. There wasn't that much content written just for young people.

When I was 12 I was watching things like L.A. Law, and that wasn't at all unusual.

Rudderneck · 22/10/2023 02:52

blackheartsgirl · 22/10/2023 00:29

I watched and read all sorts when I was a young teen.

i was 14 when I read clan of the cave bear series, our school library had them, as well as Stephen King and other totally unsuitable books 😂.

my parents didn’t know about half the things I watched on my ancient black and white tv that they bought me for my 9th birthday.

i do think growing up reading and watching different things really helped shape who I am today

Yes, those Clan of the Cave Bear books were quite eye-opening.

I also loved House of Cards, and a lot of the Masterpiece Theater productions.

I do think there is more dumbing down now for kids in what they read. A lot of teen books, in particular, are full of sex, but often the stories and the writing are simplistic and shallow.

With tv in particular they don't seem to have the attention span for anything with a lot of dialogue or complicated plot plotting.

It's a little sad.

this reeks a bit of 'old man yells at cloud'

IMarchToADifferentDrummer · 22/10/2023 03:58

Maybe your DN is just a bit more mature than your DD!
Some prefer tv programmes aimed at older audiences.
Stop worrying, she's fine!

Girasoli · 22/10/2023 07:41

Maybe he Maybe he is getting ideas for his playhouse/den/treehouse?

Haha yes, that is his favourite activity - moving half the furniture/ destroying the sofa cushions and making himself a fort to eat snacks and watch cartoons from.

Ouch. I don't think it's bland. It's won huge numbers of acting and production awards. It encompasses multi generations and covers things like bereavement, dementia, alcoholism, bulimia, racism. I can see why it appeals to some teens too.

PostItInABook · 22/10/2023 09:08

What is this obsession people have with being ‘normal’? What even is normal anyway? 99.99% of people are normal. Liking different things or doing things differently to you does not mean someone is abnormal. Open your minds just a tiny bit.

Purpleturtle45 · 22/10/2023 09:10

It's an amazing show and not inappropriate so I think it's great she is watching it, it's very cleverly done. YABU for commenting in a negative way about your niece.

Busephalus · 22/10/2023 09:15

It's about family relationships, most people i know are in families, it's about race, gender, sexuality, war, alcoholism, politics, ptsd, us that enough for a 14 year old?

EarringsandLipstick · 22/10/2023 09:37

Why is it any of your business? How rude to comment to your DSis as well!

My DC watch all kinds of programmes that aren't typical teen fodder. Streaming services mean they see lots of options they wouldn't ordinarily come across.

I can completely see why 'This is Us' would appeal to a 14 yo girl; they often like Gilmore Girls, Suits, and similar ... all people-based relationship dramas.
