To think this isn't a normal show for a 14 year old girl to be interested in?

My niece has taken interest in this show recently, its not exactly innapropriate but aibu to wonder why she's interested in it?

The show is This is Us, from what i can tell it's made for adults and isn't advertised to teenagers at all. I thought most girls that age were watching Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars (I know my slightly younger dd is.) I'm not bothered that she watches the show I'm just wondering why shes interested 😂

Asked my sister why her daughter was watching a show meant for 30-somethings and she got annoyed, am I completely out of touch and unreasonable?

Do you remember the show "Thirtysomething"? I used to watch that along with LA Law when I was 14, maybe even younger. 😍

McQueensMuse · 21/10/2023 21:31

Me and my daughter binge-watched this together and it is one of the best memories of my life with her.
It started so many conversations about life and relationships and I think it's perfect viewing for that age group.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/10/2023 21:32

I teach 14 year-old girls and have taught hundreds of them over the years. Many of them would rather watch paint dry than Pretty Little Liars. I'm not sure it's a question of being out of touch. Teenage girls were never a homogenous mass.

BoohooWoohoo · 21/10/2023 21:33

I've watched programmes like PLL and Gossip Girl and I wasn't a teen.

I think it's fine to be interested in programmes that your age group don't normally like.

VerticalSausages · 21/10/2023 21:33

I was anticipating extreme violence, or perhaps something too ‘boyish’, not This Is Us! 😀😂

lordloveadog · 21/10/2023 21:33

What do you think 14 year old girls should like?

Janedoe82 · 21/10/2023 21:33

At that age I remember watching ‘Soldier Soldier’, ‘Band of Gold’ and not much older ‘sex and the city’.

JaxiiTaxii · 21/10/2023 21:34

It's funny & touching & has characters we can all relate to.

As shows go, it's a good one.

It was a long time ago, but I think I loved shows about families and grown up lives when I was in my mid teens.

Beamur · 21/10/2023 21:34

My teen DD loved this programme.

LorW · 21/10/2023 21:34

It’s a really good show. Cried my eyes out several times though. Perfect for a 14yo I would say.

Coffeedrinker7 · 21/10/2023 21:37

Completely normal! I am watching it at the moment with my 13yo.

In her words, she likes “peopley” shows, we’ve also watched Gilmore Girls and Parenthood together. She doesn’t like vampires or sci fi, which is the kind of thing my older DD liked at her age.

FeverBeam · 21/10/2023 21:39
Confused

Didn't we all love 'grown up' shows when we were 14?

I remember babysitting at this age and I loved watching NYPD Blue, Twin Peaks, Sex and the City, repeats of North & South (the Patrick Swayze one, rather than Elizabeth Gaskell), all kinds of stuff that wasn't aimed at teen girls.

StaunchMomma · 21/10/2023 21:40

You're being precious.

At 14 all I wanted to watch was horror films.

This is Us is hardly going to lead her astray!

Stop comparing other people's kids to yours. They're not the international standard for teenage girls!

mollyfolk · 21/10/2023 21:43

Oh it’s a lovely warm show. I thought this was going to be about some horrific horror or something. My tween likes stuff like this. We love watching the Gilmore girls together. She likes gentle feel good stuff, no violence or anything remotely scary. She’s like me. Why would you even care? It’s definitely suitable. I wouldn’t even mention it.

CornedBeef451 · 21/10/2023 21:45

My DD watched it around that age, it's a nice family show so we could all watch it. I'd much rather that than some if the shows made for teens!

Moomoomo · 21/10/2023 21:49

My 13 year old watches it. She also loves modern family, gilmore girls, Community, Parks and rec, Gray's anatomy, arrested development etc.

She tried riverdale and quickly gave up on it when it "went all weird" 🤣

LeefsPrings · 21/10/2023 21:49

My dd spemt her toddler years being fascinated by Countdown every afternoon.

5YearsLeft · 21/10/2023 21:50

@Idratherbepaddleboarding Ah! Me as well! Midsomer Murders with my gran. I remember sitting there thinking small villages must be absolutely the most dangerous places in the world (Hot Fuzz confirmed this, many years later), and also how could they come up with SO many places with Midsomer in the name?!

But I can just imagine my gran writing the OP a weeeeeee bit differently. “I’m worried about my granddaughter. I expected her to be watching something all the other girls her age are watching, but instead she seems obsessed with the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice from the mid-90s. At this delicate age, will seeing Colin Firth in a wet shirt forever ruin all other men for her?”

At that age I remember watching ‘Soldier Soldier’, ‘Band of Gold’ and not much older ‘sex and the city’.

Wow, those are a blast from the past. Could you imagine band of gold being watched now🤣

WandaWonder · 21/10/2023 21:53

I think your opinion on it ir more weird than the show, most of my viewing a teenager was grown up stuff

Swimminginthelake · 21/10/2023 21:55

I watched a show called Thirty Something at the same age! I would have loved This is US at 14. It's a great show and not much that's too inappropriate for that age. She has good taste!

Createausername1970 · 21/10/2023 21:56

I am not familiar with the programme, so can't comment, but at that age the programme I wanted to watch most of all was MASH and I am fairly sure that wasn't aimed at teenage girls. Everyone's different.

I loved that, I watched it again pretty recently and enjoyed it all over again!

Janedoe82 · 21/10/2023 21:57

Devilsmommy I loved ‘Brides of Christ’ too. Lol.
But I grew up in Belfast so we weren’t easily shocked lol

Janedoe82 · 21/10/2023 22:00

Oh yes! LA Law!! Don’t make programmes like some of the 90s dramas now
