You shouldn't be driving to the office when there will be a red weather warning

We are in the north east of Scotland. Tomorrow is supposed to be an Amber weather warning for wind and rain most of the day. Later it will apparently be even worse and turning to a red weather warning.
I suggested to my DH that he should maybe work from home tomorrow.
However, his bosses have said they need everyone in the office for a big project. Not likely to get home before the weather warning goes red either.
DH has to drive a pretty awful road to get home. Any other routes would have even more trees and are really twisty.
Surely they should work from home if the weather is going to be that bad?

Surely your husbands is calling in sick if the employer is risking employees lives?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 18/10/2023 19:25

Honestly these replies about going in for a half day or a whole day are a bit silly really.
The majority of the UK worked from home for 1-2yrs very recently so it's kind of ridiculous to not allow it for one day in a red weather warning.

Thatladdo · 18/10/2023 19:25

Should avoid travel, only travel if essential.
His management say travel, if he doesnt want to or questions it he should consider setting out concerns in an email and confirming they are aware and accept the risk.
Consider staying away from home / near work.

I HIGHLY doubt the project is of such significance it is worth the risk.
(It isnt)

itsgettingweird · 18/10/2023 19:28

Yanbu.

Last year when there was a red warning all the schools shut locally.

We had a tree come down in the playground so lucky no one was in.

Although it's made a great play area since!

Benminster · 18/10/2023 19:30

Everyone saying he should stay home and not travel when there is a red warning but the red warning starts 6PM tomorrow, so why should he stay home?

Gottaworkwhatever · 18/10/2023 19:30

Please have a thought for those of us who are expected to work whatever! We have to drive through the weather leaving our families, there is no choice. Believe me, there would be uproar and repercussions if I didn’t show up. I guess if a tree comes down on me on my in that might be my only excuse!

Radiat · 18/10/2023 19:32

Because it won’t be going from zero to red. There’s an amber warning in place prior to the red. Which still means dangerous driving conditions.

His boss is being unreasonable.

Tryingmybestadhd · 18/10/2023 19:32

We are on the red alert area also in the northeast and my husband works refuses to tell people to stay home . We are on school end term break but if we whereby the schools would close . We live rurally and our roads become rivers . I think the ants thing the emergency services need is people stuck in cars because work is making them themselves in danger . Red warning clearly states “ danger to live , do nit travel unless it’s a emergency “

Sawaranga · 18/10/2023 19:33

@Benminster because there's an amber warning immediately preceding it.

Amber advice is to travel if absolutely necessary.

Red is do not travel unless eg police/emergency worker etc.

My brother is an emergency worker who goes out in weather like this and people like the OP's husband's boss really fuck me off. Have some common sense.

pinksheetss · 18/10/2023 19:37

I live in NE Scotland and our whole building has put out an email advising no one to travel to work tomorrow and Friday due to the warnings.
Anything that big can be done via Teams. Not worth the risk if it does amount to what the forecast is saying

Kam610 · 18/10/2023 19:38

I'm also in NE Scotland and feeling anxious about the next couple of days. I think they should be encouraging working from home as much as possible. The red alert on met office says there is a danger to life from flooding. I received a notification from the council saying they are closing all gyms/swimming pools libraries etc to maintain staff safety. So I think people who can work from home should definitely be allowed to stay home. Its such an unnecessary risk.

Tryingmybestadhd · 18/10/2023 19:38

I’ve told hubby to stay home even if works doesn’t make allowances , I’m local to some if you near Montrose and I don’t think it’s worth the risk , if he misses a day of work I prefer that . Not to mention if the electricity goes off I want him home as my daughter has autism and freaks out and have the other 2 kids too .
I wish the local government made businesses close

Twilight7777 · 18/10/2023 19:40

If the office is not in the red area but your home is, surely that means he’s more at risk leaving the house and then travelling back to the house.

PinkyFlamingo · 18/10/2023 19:41

RandomButtons · 18/10/2023 16:30

Dunno, how bad are the winds forcast to be?

It's a red weather warning!

gotomomo · 18/10/2023 19:42

Some of us can't wfh, we go in whatever the weather! Ok I'm not in Scotland but I've driven the 20 minute rural roads to work under red warnings many times, people rely on you

gotomomo · 18/10/2023 19:46

@margotrose

Nobody? Drs, ambulance, fire engines, police, nurses ... they can't not go in ! How about carers for the vulnerable? What if they don't get fed, their meds?

What people mean is office workers rather than nobody

ScreamingBeans · 18/10/2023 19:46

He needs to tell his boss that as there's a red weather warning, the schools are closing and he needs to stay home and look after his kids. Plus there's an amber weather warning all day and the red weather conditions could start earlier

Scottishskifun · 18/10/2023 19:46

mandydandy · 18/10/2023 17:35

There are still so many dodgy looking trees from storm Arwen on his route too.
Not really any hotels really close available. You would still need to drive from the hotel to the office in the industrial estate.
It is an oil company so really no need to be in the office whilst the weather is so shit outside.

Tell him to contact his HR dept! They would not be agreeing with the project manager! Most oil companies have told their staff not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
It sounds like a bolshy PM!

If he does go in then he leaves by 4 I would probably remind his manager that the roads were badly flooded just 10 days ago including the A90!

I remember a manager commenting when I left the office early during a Amber warning (was watching the river gauges on Sepa website and had a bridge to cross!) He ended up apologising in the end took him 4 hours to do a 30 min journey!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/10/2023 19:47

I'm in the same position and we've been told to come in, leave in time to get home before the red warning starts at 6pm, then don't come in on Friday. I'm antsy about it tbh as we had limited access 2 weeks ago to our village and this is going to be way worse!

Wanttobekind · 18/10/2023 19:51

Our building in the NE has been closed for the next two days as they don’t want to put any of the 1000+ staff based there to be out at risk. Sounds like his boss is a total dick.

AegonT · 18/10/2023 19:54

I wouldn't drive except to hospital or something under a red warning. His managers' top priority should be safety.

Bartat · 18/10/2023 19:54

I hope your DH stays home tomorrow. No job is worth risking your life for. And if you get cut off, you would be entirely alone as well.

Personally I would refuse to go in, as politely as possible.

Gottaworkwhatever · 18/10/2023 19:59

@Bartat
Good I won’t go in either then! As you said, no job is worth risking your life for.

Sawaranga · 18/10/2023 20:01

What do you do @Gottaworkwhatever ?

sugarrosepetal · 18/10/2023 20:09

After last week's flooding when it wasn't even a named storm? Yes, you're definitely not being unreasonable. The roadslips were bad last week too, so they'll likely be even worse tomorrow and Friday. ScotRail have suspended all services up north. Your DH needs to tell his employer he values his life over being in the office and can work from home.
