To think my hair is nothing like I asked for and be crying about it?

I changed my hair colour quite substantially today. I had a full head bleach/platinum blonde before and wanted something like the colour in the second photo shown. The first photo is what I have. I specifically mentioned that I didn’t want it to ‘just’ look highlighted and not frumpy.

it’s a big change and I know my hair is shorter than the picture, but I feel it doesn’t look anything like I asked for and I feel really upset about it and keep crying. Not least as I suspect the condition of my hair means it may not be possible to correct it.

I know I need to message the stylist. I feel awful as she is SO lovely. I’m also not sure I now trust her to correct it however.

AIBU? (I’m thinking it’s not like the photo and for crying like a wally)

when yours is twice the length it currently is, then it’ll look similar 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, the model pic is much lighter but is definitely blonde hair with darker highlights. The OP's photo is darker but she has dyed grey hair in my eyes with no blonde left at all. Looking at her bright blonde hair before the hairdresser did it and I can see why it's upsetting.

It’s what she asked for. Sorry, but the model has much more and much longer hair and it’s filtered to shit. Hairdressers aren’t magic. Her hair isn’t grey, it’s extremely light and it’s the darkness of the photo. I had nearly white bleached hair once upon a time and it looked the same in certain lighting. If the OP was fully blonde then it’s gonna be hard to do a dark root plus what she wants on such short hair. OP needed to be more realistic about it unfortunately.

i’ve looked again and it’s the dark root on the short hair that’s causing the misconception. If OPs hair was longer and thicker it would look the same.

Its 100% better than it was before, which looked dried and over worked. I actually thought the pic of it before was a hairdresser model head on a stick or a cheap, nylon wig😬Sorry, but I'm being honest. It now looks healthier and like real hair again now.

You'd have needed a button in your back like a Tressy doll for it to look the same.
and professional lighting.

I think your hair looks lovely!

RudsyFarmer · 18/10/2023 22:35

I think it’s a close colour match too. You just need more product and styling.

Kevintheelf80 · 18/10/2023 22:42

This always seems to happen to me. It seems to be the toner that causes it so I use blonde shampoo for a few weeks (not the purple stuff!) and find it goes more the colour I like it

LaurieStrode · 19/10/2023 02:12

It looks a million times better now than in your "before" photo.

Give it a few days and maybe you'll like it.

Crzy · 19/10/2023 05:26

I do see what you mean but i do think it actually still looks just as nice and I’m actually quite surprised I like it! Defo could’ve done with a shade lighter toner and some chunkier sections on a few bits but it’s closer than I expected upon seeing title. Good news is it should lighten when it fades and those tones tend to fade quite quickly then if you’re still unhappy you can get a hairdresser to tone it with the correct shade shown in your inspo pic but part of your dislike may just be the shock of change and looking so different I find I get used to it and love it but at first I’m unhappy and i realised it’s the change of appearance that unsettles me for a few days each time

bakedbrain · 19/10/2023 05:47

I think there's a layer of dark hair underneath and a layer of bleached hair atop in both pics. But to be brutally honest, she has way more volume so both layers can contrast more. The different volume has affected your colour intensity (depth) and chunkiness (width). Also the curling and styling

florafaun · 19/10/2023 09:06

It just looks like generic grey hair. Depending how old you are that may or may not suit. It's better than your before photo though.

@CrazyDogLady2022 First of all I think your hair looks amazing. I know that probably doesn't help, but for the record. Secondly, the point around photo editing is that there are some effects that basically can't exist in real life. It's like going into a pet shop with a pic of a CGI dragon and asking for one of those.

Also, the model's hair is soooo voluminous (different from being thick, which is a description of the thickness of the hairs themselves - I mean she has a LOT of hair) because she almost certainly has a lot of extensions (standard practice for these shoots). That means she can have really chunky highlights.

Imagine you have an A4 piece of paper. If you drew really chunky stripes on it you might only be able to fit two or three stripes on the piece of paper. Whereas if you had a piece of paper a metre wide, you could fit lots of thick stripes on it.

Your hair is the A4 paper, the model's is the metre-wide one. If you got the chunky stripes in your hair, you would barely get any of that lovely variegated ripple of colour, just a few chunky blocks. A bit Cruella Deville! So, to get that dappled interplay of the different colours on much smaller volume of hair, you need to use less chunky highlights.

Hopefully your colourist explained why you wouldn't get hair that looked exactly like the picture, tho.

Either way if you're not happy, go back and chat to her. See it as part of a collaborative creative relationship, not a complaint. You might come out feeling better, or with changes to you hair. Either way you absolutely have the right to go back and have that chat.

What you end up with is a lot to do with the original colour and texture of your hair. The model’s hair may be completely different from yours, and might even have been photoshopped. What did you say when you were shown the back of your hair? It would have been ok to say you wanted it to be more dramatic and could she try again. Maybe say now, that you’ve washed it, it isn’t quite what you hoped for. I’m sure she would prefer to put it right than for you to say nothing and be a dissatisfied customer.
