To think my hair is nothing like I asked for and be crying about it?

I changed my hair colour quite substantially today. I had a full head bleach/platinum blonde before and wanted something like the colour in the second photo shown. The first photo is what I have. I specifically mentioned that I didn’t want it to ‘just’ look highlighted and not frumpy.

it’s a big change and I know my hair is shorter than the picture, but I feel it doesn’t look anything like I asked for and I feel really upset about it and keep crying. Not least as I suspect the condition of my hair means it may not be possible to correct it.

I know I need to message the stylist. I feel awful as she is SO lovely. I’m also not sure I now trust her to correct it however.

AIBU? (I’m thinking it’s not like the photo and for crying like a wally)

I think yours looks beautiful. I am not keen on the inspiration photo at all.

Same here. Yours is gorgeous OP.

Snoken · 18/10/2023 15:22

Your hair looks nice and natural. I think your hair is too short to do the same type of bayalage as the woman in the other picture. It would just look like grey hair with white tips. I do think you could have got it a bit lighter though in colour, but it's hard to say what looks best when I can't see your face/colours. Someone like Jenna Lyons looks great in a darker grey, but many people gets washed out by it. I'm one of them.

Stopbloodybanging · 18/10/2023 15:22

It looks nice. I think crying over it is a bit ott. Next time just ask for really REALLY chunky highlights. I do this as my hair texture tends to always make highlights merge into a bland meh colour. I say to the stylist, go against everything you’ve been taught and make them look obvious - I then end up with nice looking highlights.
Until then, enjoy your hair, it’s really pretty.

CitizenofGotham · 18/10/2023 15:22

I honestly think the colour looks very similar. Yours underneath looks a bit lighter than hers, so maybe it's less of a contrast? Is that your natural colour or did the hairdresser dye it? Also your curls are less defined so think that adds to the more blended look.

LilyLemonade · 18/10/2023 13:09

It looks nice and the colour is very similar to the picture. Just the styling is a bit different.

This. I think as well the picture you shared is a professional picture where lighting etc. is spot on whereas the lighting in your picture is a bit duller.

BeetleDeuce · 18/10/2023 15:26

You look fab OP. It looks just like the inspo photo to me on a real person. I agree that a touch of silver shampoo will lift it a bit more if that’s your vibe. Gorgeous!

CaroleSinger · 18/10/2023 15:30

A good measure of perspective is to ask yourself if this will still matter as much when you reach your last moments. I mean a bereavement or a sick child ok cry endlessly, but can hair really devastate us this much?

OriginalUsername2 · 18/10/2023 15:30

You look great! The difference is, that model is about 20 and has 3 or 4 times as much hair as you. No shade, my hair is the same as yours.

Blonde usually takes a few trips to get it how you really want it. Next time you can add more blonde. It’s best to go lighter gradually for your hair health.

I think if you’ll be happier with it in a few weeks. That bottom layer needs to grow a bit to get a decent curl in it.

Lifecanbebeautiful12 · 18/10/2023 15:31

I think your colour looks much better and more natural/classy than the photo. It is very similar anyway but the difference is Instagram filtering/lighting/styling and definitely length. Yours isn’t quite as bright blonde though.

70sDuvet · 18/10/2023 15:31

As soon as you wash your hair the toners will start to lift and it will be brighter and not as ashy/grey.
Especially as you are white blonde underneath.

When I go to get my hair dyed I try and not wash it for as long as possible as I was told/read/possibly made up that the longer you can leave a toner on without washing it out for the first time the longer it will last.

So if you wash it, it will lighten up asap and hopefully be the colour you desired

rocknrollaa · 18/10/2023 15:33

If your hair was styled more like the second picture and professionally lit, it would look very similar. Her hair is also thicker than yours which you can't change.

I don't think there is enough wrong with the colour to complain to be honest, it looks good.

I would love to see what your hair looked like before today’s highlights, and what base she was working on.

It was this

I think your hair is lovely in the first pic, the inspiration pic not so nice go back though if you don’t like it ,

SurvivingCPTSD · 18/10/2023 15:34

Looks like the same colour to me but not as blocky. That may be because the style length and lighting are different. For what it's worth I think yours looks nice.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 18/10/2023 14:28

The model's hair is VERY expensively died white. It's very difficult to achieve, would take 6-8 hours for her length of hair depending on her base colour, and best results are on hair that's never been bleached or dyed before.

You have standard blonde highlights, on already dyed hair.

They're totally different. Your hair looks very nice, but not like the model's at all.

Except my hair pretty much was white when I arrived… bleached very carefully to that colour…

I may be being naive here but I somewhat agree with the OP . The second photo looks like very thick highlights and she has had fine ones. So I reckon ( if you leave instagram aside ) - she won't get that look with fine highlights.

@CrazyDogLady2022 Can you go back and ask for some much thicker highlights to be added . I assume if the ones you have are OK for your hair a few thicker ones in the same colour wont be a problem . I would do it because even if the picture depends on the camera - that is the look you were aiming for & you haven't really got it. Think your hair looks nice btw but I can see why you are disappointed.

Good luck - go back to nice stylist and have a chat and see what she can do. I am sure she won't want you to be upset about what she has done.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 18/10/2023 15:38

Sorry OP but given the differences in lighting and length I think she has given you what you asked for.

Did you have Olaplex or similar for the condition?

Lilibert456 · 18/10/2023 15:39

Looks a hell of a lot better than the bright blonde. It looks pretty much like the picture you gave to the hairdresser except your hair is much shorter. It's just a hairstyle that can easily be changed not something to cry over FGS.

wintertimeisbest · 18/10/2023 15:39

It not has bad as what mine was. 32 weeks ago.
I went in for a short pixie cut and came out with a shaved head i mean grade 2 buzz cut shave all over and a little bit (what i call fluff) left on top of my head kinda at the front.
It was so bad i came home and shaved it off.
No choice but to start again.
I will never use a hairdresser again.

luckylavender · 18/10/2023 15:40

ilovemydogmore · 18/10/2023 13:10

Actually, looking again it looks BETTER than the photo. The light hair in the photo is a weird greeny yellow and the highlights are really stark against the base. I really like yours.

I thought that too

mushroom3 · 18/10/2023 15:40

I think that the model has much thicker hair as well as longer, also the waves plus probably styling products makes the hair look like it's sticking together more in blocks. Your hair looks great OP!

Scalottia · 18/10/2023 15:41

I am sorry, but crying? Strange.

I think it looks nice.

JulesC87 · 18/10/2023 15:45

It’s really nice OP! The model has a darker base than you which isn’t as subtle a difference in the base and highlights as yours. I think yours is much more classy as I don’t like these very dark roots personally. Totally agree that the model has professional lighting and shit loads of serum/shine spray. Buy some and experiment with lighting. You’ll be surprised.

If it cheers you up, I feel devastated every time I leave the salon after going in with a photo of Cameron Diaz or Kate Moss and coming out looking nothing like her… In every sense.

margotrose · 18/10/2023 15:48

Of course your hair isn't going to look like the photo - it's been filtered, for starters, and the model is also holding her hair up/away from her head for maximum volume. Her hair is also longer and curlier and "fuller" than yours.

I think your stylist did an amazing job, especially seeing the "before" photo.

HaddawayAndShite · 18/10/2023 15:48

I think peoples expectations are way to high when it comes to expecting your hairdresser to make your hair look EXACTLY like photographs. Aside from being highly edited, age, condition, previous dying will all play a part in the final product.

I think your end result is realistic given the atrociously edited photo.

But you seem very fixed on it being wrong so I’m not sure anyone can say anything other than “go back and get it “fixed” to make you happy.
