To think my hair is nothing like I asked for and be crying about it?

I changed my hair colour quite substantially today. I had a full head bleach/platinum blonde before and wanted something like the colour in the second photo shown. The first photo is what I have. I specifically mentioned that I didn’t want it to ‘just’ look highlighted and not frumpy.

it’s a big change and I know my hair is shorter than the picture, but I feel it doesn’t look anything like I asked for and I feel really upset about it and keep crying. Not least as I suspect the condition of my hair means it may not be possible to correct it.

I know I need to message the stylist. I feel awful as she is SO lovely. I’m also not sure I now trust her to correct it however.

AIBU? (I’m thinking it’s not like the photo and for crying like a wally)

It looks fine to me. A slightly shorter version of the Instagram photo which has most likely been retouched and has loads of products specifically applied to take one photo.

I would also say that your hair is not as thick as the model photo so having diner hair is never going to produce the same result.

I was expecting a disaster but it certainly isn't!

Yeah but OP’s hair is possibly the closest anyone will ever be able to get to that colour in the real world. No stylist can match something that’s been photoshopped.

OPs hair was already white though so I think plenty of colourists could have got it way closer to the pic.

I think it isn’t looking as chunky streaks because your hair is finer than the inspiration pic. You’ve obviously had a toner on it. I’d wait until you’ve washed it a few times, I reckon it will brighten up. Don’t use purple shampoo yet it won’t brighten up. Yes I’m a hairdresser. If you’re still not happy after a few washes speak to your hairdresser, it may need a little bit of lightening on the ends. Not much.

Thankyou. Yes, I have bleached blonde hair for years, I know blue/purple shampoo will do the opposite of what I want to achieve.

I’m giving it a wash as perhaps once some of the toner lifts it will be better. It’s also going to fade pretty quickly. I’ll see how it is and then maybe get her to lift the ends a little.

I do think part of it is shock. I’ve gone from blonde to red or dark quite a few times before (not on this hair growth) so I know I always feel a bit she’ll shocked afterwards.

I also think it’s lovely and I suspect it’s more flattering than the before. I also think the shock of the change impacting you.

you can ask for some chunky white highlights, but I suspect you will look like you’ve candy striped hair as you don’t curl it. That sort of look doesn’t work on mildly wavy or straight hair, it will just give a skunk look.

honestly id live with it awhile.

Back21970 · 18/10/2023 16:17

Your’s looks nice and quite natural but I don’t think it was what you asked for so can definitely see the issue.

IMO it’s more ‘frumpy’ than ‘edgy’.

Apologies to all for using the word frumpy (It was used in OP or I wouldn’t have done)😀

ichifanny · 18/10/2023 16:17

It looks like it’s been toned quite ashy chances are it will lighten up once washed .

Thanks. No need to apologise. Yes, I wasn’t after a natural look, as is perhaps evidenced by the colour it was before… haha

I’m feeling the same tbh. It obviously the majority don’t agree.

For what it's worth I do think your new colour is fab, it's just a lot more muted than what you were going for and I disagree completely with people saying a stylist couldn't achieve it and the weird logic about the brightness being turned up on the pic, especially when you already had that bright white hair!

Woollyguru · 18/10/2023 16:21

It looks nothing like the photo. Just speak to the hairdresser and ask if anything can be done.

I had a disastrous colour once and my hairdresser corrected it. She's lovely!

PuddlesPityParty · 18/10/2023 15:06

Lighting and filters! Ffs. Sorry but it’s quite obvious when she’s in a dark car versus a photo that’s been shot properly and filters on it 🤦‍♀️

Yeah, the model pic is much lighter but is definitely blonde hair with darker highlights. The OP's photo is darker but she has dyed grey hair in my eyes with no blonde left at all. Looking at her bright blonde hair before the hairdresser did it and I can see why it's upsetting.

321user123 · 18/10/2023 16:25

I think OP it looks similar to the photo once you account for professional lighting, editing and filters.

however, to get it closer to the pic you’d need more highlights of the very platinum blonde variety with a greyish toner imo.
you have 2-3 strands like that at the top of the head, ask the stylist to do more strands like that and it would be the closest match to the pic.

PlayingfootballwithSeals · 18/10/2023 16:26

See i don't see frumpy at all, I see effortlessly cool in your photo. In my eyes it is a large improvement on the block bright yellow blond you had before. That to me was more dated/frumpy that the textured and toned look you have now. The toning and laying of colour really brings it up to date

I suppose it only matters though if you like it. Give a few days, I bet you will get tonnes of compliments.

bottleofbeer · 18/10/2023 16:29

Often it's not possible to get a certain shade straight away and takes time to achieve it.

Blonde washes up so it can sometimes take a few washes to see the true shade.

You're after an icy blonde, you're going to need toners which I'd advise getting done professionally. Your hair is actually lovely but I do think your stylist needed to be more honest. You can't walk into a salon and expect exact replicas unless you're hair is already quite similar

Agreed. What you had before OP was very, very severe. This is much softer and a lot nicer I think.

Is it exactly what you asked for? No. But she's a stylist not a magician - there's only so much you can do with fine, bleached hair.

MzHz · 18/10/2023 16:39

I think your hair is beautiful, give it time to get used to. you look wonderful

Unreasonable on a couple of fronts here.

  1. Crying. What is there to cry about? You have a lovely hair. You haven't left the salon with a purple mullet, now, have you?
  2. It may not have been possible to achieve the result on the picture to begin with depending on original hair colour, how well your hair lifts and, frankly, your budget (because some colouring treatments are more expensive than others). I would, however, expect an experienced stylist to discuss this in advance of the appointment.
  3. Not discussing it with the stylist. However lovely she is she can't fix it unless you tell her. She wouldn't want to lose a client because they didn't give her an opportunity to fix the issue. No decent stylist is ever offended when customer asks for adjustment (I used to manage hairdressing salons so trust me when I say this)
  4. The staged and airbrushed photo will never look the same as result in real life.

Laughing at this because I was actually toying with getting a purple (well, lilac) mullet, a bit like Zendaya's: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/hair/g37358907/modern-mullet-women-trend/

The photo is massively photo shopped - the contrast is through the roof..

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 18/10/2023 17:20

@CrazyDogLady2022

There's no way your hair was gonna look like photo in your OP (on the right,) sweetie, because it's too short. Flowers It looks nice though. Smile Please don't feel blue about it! I think it looks better than it did on the photo you posted at 15.33.

Are you quite young-ish (like under 35? Because IMO, grey-ish highlights look fab on young women. Grey hair IS ageing on anyone over 40 though. I am late 50s, and hell will freeze over before I will let my hair go grey. I know that's not a popular view on here, but I am entitled to my opinion.

NewName122 · 18/10/2023 17:21

That is like the picture op. Yours is too short to look just like that but it really is pretty close.

PositanoBay · 18/10/2023 17:22

It does look really nice though. You shouldn't be unhappy when you've lived a couple of days with it

Shadowonasun · 18/10/2023 17:57

The model's hair is very dark grey, lighter grey and white/blond. OP's pic is drab grey, mousy grey and lighter grey. More 'granny' and frumpy than edgy and sexy. Sorry OP, I'm not saying this to be nasty. Had a fair share of shitty colours myself. I'd be unhappy and I'd redo it in your place. No need to cry though :)

diddl · 18/10/2023 18:02

I think it's much nicer than the pic much nicer than it was before.

Zebedee55 · 18/10/2023 18:05

Colour looks similar. Just different length hair.🤷‍♀️

Both hair pictures look grey to me.

And me (but I suspect we both try and get rid of our grey!)
