To think my hair is nothing like I asked for and be crying about it?

I changed my hair colour quite substantially today. I had a full head bleach/platinum blonde before and wanted something like the colour in the second photo shown. The first photo is what I have. I specifically mentioned that I didn’t want it to ‘just’ look highlighted and not frumpy.

it’s a big change and I know my hair is shorter than the picture, but I feel it doesn’t look anything like I asked for and I feel really upset about it and keep crying. Not least as I suspect the condition of my hair means it may not be possible to correct it.

I know I need to message the stylist. I feel awful as she is SO lovely. I’m also not sure I now trust her to correct it however.

AIBU? (I’m thinking it’s not like the photo and for crying like a wally)

I think the issue you have is that the blonde on the professional photo looks cleaner. For a starter, it will as it’s a professionally touched up photo with great light.

But the other reason it does is because of those very dark roots. If you had died platinum blonde hair before, getting roots to mid lengths as dark as that will be a challenge. It can be done as I did exactly that but I was in the chair for 7 hours!

I think what you have looks lovely and is as close as you’re going to get to the photo given the length of your hair unless you want to spend upwards of £350 and the entire day at a high end salon.

Are you a hair model? Have you had your hair worked on many times? Do you have the same hair quality as the model? Are you the same age?

YABU.

A) it looks like the same colour
b) obviously you have very different hair
c) your hair isn’t as long as the model’s
d) you’re probably quite a lot older - your hair will be different

And really - that is a highly posed highly prepared and touched up head of hair. You’re not a model - why would you think you could have hair like a model’s?

Really just grow up - crying over something as trivial as a hair cut?!

Mummyofbananas · 18/10/2023 14:45

It's not too far off, I think it's nice but a few more chunky platinum highlights would brighten it up I think, would be an easy fix.

Snailblue · 18/10/2023 14:45

As a pp has proven with the edited shot of OP's hair, the model photo is not what the model's hair looks like in real life.

I live in a city where women invest a lot in beauty and grooming. You never see hair like the model's unless it's a filtered social media photo.

Osakaflowers · 18/10/2023 14:46

I think it should have a bit more blonde running through as it looks quite ash/grey. But I wouldn't worry too much, after a few washes it will just be very blonde. It won't stay like that, it never does.

sandyhappypeople · 18/10/2023 14:47

I don't agree with others at all, forget the lighting and the styling, the models hair goes from quite dark black/dark grey to very light platinum blond, yours goes from medium/dark grey to a light blondy grey, I think you need either darker roots or that bright blond at the ends to give you the vibe you were looking for, it's the contrast between the colours that is missing.

I do think it looks nice though, but appreciate it's not quite what you were looking for, maybe you should go back and ask if they can lighten the ends more?

I bloody hate going to the hairdressers.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/10/2023 14:47

If your hair was styled and had a filtered photo put on socials it would look very similar IMO.

Don't be fooled by instagram.

Londoncatshed · 18/10/2023 14:48

The base colour is good and the same but she’s put too much in and not left enough of the blonde in. It will fade and in time I would have some chunky bleach highlights in although i don’t know about the condition of your hair.

EmpressSoleil · 18/10/2023 14:48

I think this is the danger of inspiration photos. There are so many factors involved as to why your hair wouldn't look like the models. Honestly I think the hairdresser has done what she was able to. I understand the disappointment but it looks fine.

Desperateinseattle · 18/10/2023 14:49

I prefer yours, the stock picture isn’t very nice imo. Yours looks lovely.

CrazyDogLady2022 · 18/10/2023 13:14

It’s the colour I’m querying. The photo is more of a baylayage/chunky blonde look and I feel mine just looks like fine highlights.

It would look horrible if she had done chunkier sections on your hair and without the lighting I expect the model's hair looks very different - rather stripey. I think yours looks lovely. the Stylist really should have explained that the end result might not look exactly like the photo. the professional photo isnt balayage that means its a graded lightening to the ends.

KingsHeath53 · 18/10/2023 14:50

The colour looks exactly the same to me x

Ontheperiphery79 · 18/10/2023 14:52

You're never going to achieve the 2nd look without professional lighting and filters.
Additionally, your hair texture and length are totally different.
If you're unhappy with the result, go back to the hairdresser and talk it through.
🤷🏼‍♀️

Gowlett · 18/10/2023 14:57

My hair stylist always points out the difference between a heavily styled photo & what my hair is going to actually do.

I have very thick, unruly, curly hair. If I show a hairdresser a photo, they have a good laugh and, when they've picked themselves up off the floor, they do the 'no, not happening' face. I've stopped showing them photos and just say how long I want it now.

Miamonthly · 18/10/2023 15:04

Humidititties · 18/10/2023 13:07

If your hair was longer and curlier and with professional lighting then it would probably look more like the picture, the colours look similar

This - if you had your hair longer, thicker, curled and professionally lit it would look the same.

Your hair is thin, even if you grew it you would need extensions or hair pieces in to make it look like that photo.

Work with what you’ve got.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 18/10/2023 14:09

I'm not sure if my eyes are going but the first page of comments say your colour is the same as the model photo but I don't see that? Your hair looks grey not blonde. I'm not sure if you wanted to go grey from your original blond? If so, then great and it is a lovely style. If you wanted blonde though, I wouldn't be happy at all 😥

Lighting and filters! Ffs. Sorry but it’s quite obvious when she’s in a dark car versus a photo that’s been shot properly and filters on it 🤦‍♀️

Cropcycle · 18/10/2023 15:09

I think your hair looks gorgeous. At least you have hair, not alopecia. And you don't live in a war zone. So, you know, that's good too

Thats not the point though really. Of course it’s a first world problem. You could say that about pretty much everything right now. But OP is asking about whether her hairdresser has done what she asked for.

Its hard to tell because colour on a screen can look different to how it actually is. To me though yours has less blonde in and doesn’t look like the blocky chunks of lighter shades the model has.

Mydogisamentalist · 18/10/2023 15:13

Jesus FarEast do you enjoy being an arsehole for the sake of it!?

BalloonSalesperson · 18/10/2023 15:13

The colour and styling looks very very similar the photo, but you don't look like the girl in the photo, you don't have a bright light shined on you and you have short hair? What were you expecting?

This, plus in the photo the girl is obviously holding it away from her head, which makes it look thicker and the light will catch it differently.

easylikeasundaymorn · 18/10/2023 15:14

coxesorangepippin · 18/10/2023 13:11

No, it's not the same at all

The colour and length are both wrong!

the hairdresser isn't a miracle worker though, if OPs hair wasn't as long as the photo there's not much she can do about that!

same with the colours, the second photo is clearly bleach blonde over dark hair, (with a photo contrast to highlight this), but OPs hair was already platinum blonde so would have been almost impossible to achieve the same look without a dark base.

I agree with the poster who said your expectations were too high. Perhaps the hairdresser should have explained this though.

StrawberryFizz27 · 18/10/2023 15:15

I think it's lovely. And it will lighten more next time you have it done.

Sofialou · 18/10/2023 15:16

i use to be a colour tec for 10 years before I had my children, the colour your stylist has done is exactly what you have asked for from the picture you have shown your hair is finer so it won’t look as chunky. She’s done a brilliant job to achieve that look

itsmylife7 · 18/10/2023 15:17

Both hair pictures look grey to me.
