DP has messed up the painting and thinks I'm over reacting for being annoyed

I bought a tin of paint for the living room wall, a dark green (bottle green from dunelm to be precise) in a matt finish. My existing (magnolia) paint job is completely flat with no shine at all as was intended.

I opened the tub and took a tiny bit from the top of the lid onto a cutting in brush, in front of him, and did a little 2 x 2 patch just to make sure I was happy with the colour before he started. I was.

Long story short he didn't bother to mix the paint or even read the tin (even though I had already told him the type I wanted and the type I bought)

2 coats later the job is done and after drying every square inch of the wall has a shiny sheen, the opposite to matt.

Confused, I looked online and the verdict was that the paint can't have been mixed properly so I asked him if he'd mixed it and he said no, I asked why not and he finally said "I thought you did"

When was I supposed to have mixed the paint? I think he's just saying that to avoid owning the mistake anyway.

He got really defensive and said I'm over reacting by being annoyed, why would he need to read the tin before starting, there's nothing wrong with it, he has never heard of "shiny" paint being a problem and it's not as if the wall is crumbling down (?)

But am I being unreasonable to be annoyed? I have a hospital appointment on Thursday which I'm quite worried about so may be a bit more touchy than usual, I don't know.

dont think I have ever mixed a tin of paint before use!! why would mixing it change it to matt insteady of shiny??? dont get that at all. better to get a decent paint!

You need to mix all the ingredients.
If you look in a tin of paint there will be a layer on top. (Assuming it’s been sitting around for a while and it’s not one of those ones that the likes of b & a do where they mix the colours for you in their machine and you take it home and use it straight away.)

Mixing the ingredients means you get an even colour and the resin is evenly spread so you don’t get variations in the finish.

Either term is fine, in this instance, as they are stirring it in order to mix it.

The other way they can mix it is to shake it.

You can't mix one thing, mix means more than one thing being combined in some way

@PigletJohn is correct to say atir

rwalker · 17/10/2023 13:24

the only time I have ever mixed paint is when it’s obviously separated like emulsion when you get water like stuff on top
if it looks alright just crack on

Paint it yourself if you’re that bothered.

@10hailmarys

shes ill, she's not currently able to do it. She has a hospital appointment on Thursday.

How about a bit of compassion instead of snippy posts?

Whether you can or not, it's unnecessarily pedantic.

wombat1a · 17/10/2023 13:44

If you opened it and painted a patch and said it was right then I wouldn't have done any mixing either as you have already okayed it.

He is in the right and you are in the wrong.

Wouldyoube · 17/10/2023 14:01

This is how a second coat is going on. The paint must be rubbish.

Third coat should I say.

The colour yes. You can't judge the finish of matt paint until it's dry.

You can't judge the colour if it hasn't been properly mixed, especially a dark colour.
I think this was a duff or mis-labelled tin TBH as I can be a bit lax on mixing and I've never had matt paint dry shiny.

justasking111 · 17/10/2023 14:20

We're in the trade know a lot of decorators, they say that places like Dunelm, B&Q sell a watered down product you need to use professional trade places if you want a quality paint. It's not cheap but it covers in two coats.

FarmGirl78 · 17/10/2023 14:29

Hankunamatata · 16/10/2023 21:55

But you took the lid off and painted a patch. I would have assumed that you had mixed it

This. You're allowed to open the tin and paint without accepting blame but he isn't? UABU.

DappledThings · 17/10/2023 14:30

That's a third coat? It doesn't even look green except in patches. It looks in that picture like you are painting a bronze coloured satin finish over the green

Robyn847 · 17/10/2023 14:32

Well this business of paint not being stirred properly affecting the shiny/mattness of the finished wall explains the shitshow that FiL left after he painted the downstairs of OH's house.

And also the front door that he came back and did as a surprise when we'd secretly agreed we'd never ever let him do DIY ever ever again.

There is more than one thing in a tin of paint. Which is why it needs to be stirred/mixed!!

It's a third coat yes.

The paint is patchy and there's a strong sheen to it. The light bouncing off the wall makes it look white in areas.

Here's a couple more pictures from different angles.

The worst part is where he has started a third coat so I've said to just leave it.

Can a paint job as bad as that be easily painted over with decent paint? I can't afford a professional decorator to do the job but can get some higher quality paint. Dunelm is the only place which has this particular shade though and it's very dark so might be hard to cover?

OP posts:
Wouldyoube · 17/10/2023 14:55

Another possibly relevant factor, he did the whole thing with a paint pad.. not a roller or brush.

I can see why that + poor quality paint might explain it.

OP posts:
LIZS · 17/10/2023 14:57

It could be that by not mixing it you have a concentration in the remaining paint so it will not cover evenly.

I wish my life was so simple that this was a big enough problem to post on line about. 🤣🤣🤣

🤨

If only you knew what I was dealing with behind the scenes. The paint fiasco has been a welcome distraction.

I've just finished painting the living room with that exact paint! It does indeed have a slight sheen compared to other matt paints I've used. More like eggshell I'd say. I found 2 coats, rolled on, was almost perfect over magnolia, but did have to add a third in the odd area. The reviews on Dunelm were excellent which is why I chose it in the end. If you have enough paint left I'd definitely finish that 3rd coat. Good luck.

Last October my husband replaced our TV with a projector so we now have an 11 foot screen for a TV.
He thought that the new TV would look good if we changed the colour of the walls from green to dark red.
He didn't ask me first he just painted one of the walls dark red.
Once I had seen it and said I like it he started painted the rest of the room.
However, he was interrupted by a neighbour and didn't get round to finishing it.
51 weeks later it still isn't finished.
I haven't bothered getting annoyed about it yet. Don't see the point of causing arguments for the sake of it.
We have a lot more things in our lives to worry about other than paint.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 17/10/2023 17:53

Try Little Greene; their paints are decent and they have those sorts of shades of green.

Your living room looks lovely. That's precisely the look I was going for, including the gold accents and plants.

This is what mine looks like of an evening on the far left side of the wall, it's a shame when daylight comes and kills the vibe 😁
