DP has messed up the painting and thinks I'm over reacting for being annoyed

I bought a tin of paint for the living room wall, a dark green (bottle green from dunelm to be precise) in a matt finish. My existing (magnolia) paint job is completely flat with no shine at all as was intended.

I opened the tub and took a tiny bit from the top of the lid onto a cutting in brush, in front of him, and did a little 2 x 2 patch just to make sure I was happy with the colour before he started. I was.

Long story short he didn't bother to mix the paint or even read the tin (even though I had already told him the type I wanted and the type I bought)

2 coats later the job is done and after drying every square inch of the wall has a shiny sheen, the opposite to matt.

Confused, I looked online and the verdict was that the paint can't have been mixed properly so I asked him if he'd mixed it and he said no, I asked why not and he finally said "I thought you did"

When was I supposed to have mixed the paint? I think he's just saying that to avoid owning the mistake anyway.

He got really defensive and said I'm over reacting by being annoyed, why would he need to read the tin before starting, there's nothing wrong with it, he has never heard of "shiny" paint being a problem and it's not as if the wall is crumbling down (?)

But am I being unreasonable to be annoyed? I have a hospital appointment on Thursday which I'm quite worried about so may be a bit more touchy than usual, I don't know.

if you were testing the colour, then you need to mix it.
Unmixed paint can come out a different colour.

So yes, he would have assumed you mixed it.

And I agree matt paint is lush and shiny paint is hideous and if it says matt it should be matt.

I'd take it back. Paint a sample on a board and take it back and ask for a replacement tin.

I voted YANBU on the basis that you have a right to be annoyed
However
Clearly he’s not a diy type of guy.

Next time do the diy yourself.

Unless the paint is supposed to be breathable, made of chalk, lime wash etc there is a type of glue in all paint. That’s why it needs stirring.

I don't understand your point?
I said it needs stirring and you said - unless it is x type of paint which needs stirring?
I know, I just said that .... it needs stirring!

RicherThanYews · 16/10/2023 23:17

YANBU. I am disabled and have chronic health issues but I single handedly repainted our entire bathroom and kitchen. 3 kinds of paint altogether and I did a smashing job. My Christmas present from my husband 2 years ago was a promise that he would repaint the living room as it badly needs it, I came home to find that he had not put sheets down or used tape and now there is paint spray on all the furniture, the wooden flooring, the curtains, the TV, you name it. To make it worse, he washed the brushes and rollers in the bathroom and sprayed the living room paint everywhere so I now have to redo the bathroom. It can be soul crushing.

OH has cocked up the central heating timer. It wasn't on at 5 or 6 this evening. At 7 I noticed that he was fiddling with the thermostat in the hall. When I mentioned that the heating hadn't come on he had a full blown tantrum saying it had come on. He then said to check the radiator next to me. Well of course it was warming up I'd seen him fiddling in the hall.

Sorry about your wall, he'll just have to repaint it

It was your lower comment about it having a shine and OP should take it back.

The point is that unless it’s mixed it won’t be Matt due to its ingredients

SecondUsername4me · 16/10/2023 23:22

Shame you didn't check the reviews before buying.

Nevermind.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/10/2023 23:23

I think they take admitting they made a mistake to mean admitting 'I'm a moron, and anyone else in the world would have done better, and I can't get anything right ' so it becomes 'this woman has totally absurd expectations and thinks I should mind read , why isn't she grateful? plenty of husbands would never have got round to doing this, and I did, so I deserve a cookie and a blow job, not criticism'

The defensiveness sounds so much like my DH. Why are men so defensive. What's going to happen if you admit you made a mistake.

Perhaps he thought OP had mixed it in order to paint with it?
What a bastard anyway.

PigletJohn · 16/10/2023 23:39

"Stirred" not "mixed"

Sorry I'm just in a mood with my own DH after a tricky weekend. I'm sure OP's DH is fine.

SacAMain · 16/10/2023 23:54

Lesson learned

No one should "assume" anything. It would be helpful if people were doing their part of the job, but do as if they hadn't.

I am not sure what he thought you would have stirred with.. surely not the brush, that would make a mess to it?

Mistressanne · 16/10/2023 23:59

Even if dh saw me stir paint he’d do it again if he was doing the painting.

LaurieStrode · 17/10/2023 00:18

In his shoes I wouldn't assume someone had stirred it. I do a lot of painting and Rule 1 is to always stir/re-stir before beginning a job.

Hope your appointment this week goes well!

Housenoob · 17/10/2023 01:19

YABU for using magnolia on the other walls 😜

randomusernam · 17/10/2023 02:00

I don't think not mixing the paint properly makes it shine. Sounds like you didn't buy matt paint. You can't get rid of Sheen by mixing it. If it wasn't mixed properly you would have differences in colour across the room as you painted and get more in to the tin.

LameBorzoi · 17/10/2023 02:06

If you had painted a patch test, I would have assumed that you had already mixed it.

MintJulia · 17/10/2023 02:20

I'm on my fifth house renovation, I've painted dozens of rooms and I've never 'mixed' matt paint. I've stirred it to get an even consistency when it has separated a little, but that doesn't make it more or less matt.

I'm not surprised your oh is defensive. He's painted a whole room as requested, just to be moaned at. I'd be pretty fed up too.

mathanxiety · 17/10/2023 04:21

Hope your appointment goes well.

I'd bring the paint back and get a refund. It's very possible the paint wasn't matte at all but eggshell.

Paint a swatch on something else - a Tupperware container or piece of poster board would work - and see if you can get a colour match in the matte finish you want from a proper paint shop.

Shame you didn't check the reviews before buying.

Nevermind.

I’ve painted countless walls in a myriad of colours in my time.

I have never once reviewed a paint or colour before buying it.

What i do do, and what I think most normal people do, is buy a test pot, give it a good shake to ensure it’s mixed, paint it on the wall, and then check what it looks like a different times of the day before making a decision.

Fifireee · 17/10/2023 05:01

Bottle green and shiny!
Do you have any magnolia left?
Sorry op it just sounds like he thought you mixed it. Hopefully you can correct it with the next coat.

MassageForLife · 17/10/2023 05:01

PigletJohn · 16/10/2023 23:39

"Stirred" not "mixed"

Either term is fine, in this instance, as they are stirring it in order to mix it.

The other way they can mix it is to shake it.

StarlightLady · 17/10/2023 05:26

A mistake has been made. If you can afford more paint or have enough left to start again, it’s a nuisance not a problem.

if it makes you feel better smack his bottom 😂

PositanoBay · 17/10/2023 06:36

Paint another coat, it's one wall
