What temperature do you put your heating on?

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already! I said the general rule in our house is at any point under 16 I’ll put it on, and set it to 18 but turn it off when I go to bed as the kids are already warm in bed by then. Apparently I’m trying to freeze us all to death 😬 but it’s the temperature I like and the kids seem fine with it! Have you had your heating on yet?

Thermostat is set to 18 but it’s on a timer so only comes on for an hour in the morning and then from about 6-10.

DustyLee123 · 16/10/2023 07:29

Yea, the heating has been on, but as I had to de-ice my car yesterday I think it’s justified.
I never have the heating on at night.

MangoAF · 16/10/2023 07:30

Just if I feel cold. Generally around 17-18, depending what I’m doing. House was 15.5 yesterday morning so I put it on for a bit. I’m 43 tho and my internal temperature has been very hot for a couple of years. Parents and ILs complain the house is cold (obvs I then put the heating on) and so does older DS. Younger DS only ever wears pants in the house and never says he’s cold!

FrenchandSaunders · 16/10/2023 07:33

I was hoping to hold out a bit longer but it’s frosty here (south london), I can hear people scraping their cars. So I’ll prob stick it on for a while this morning.

Devilsmommy · 16/10/2023 07:33

I put mine to 22 because if the thermostat is under 19.5 it feels freezing in my flat and I've got baby so need it toasty warm😊

AvengedQuince · 16/10/2023 07:39

When it's under 16 in the sitting room in the evening. Heating set to 14 by the front door, sitting room door closed means it gets to 16 or so in there.

Ladyofthelake53 · 16/10/2023 07:39

About 20 degrees victorian cottage that doesnt retain heat. Put it on for an hour last night first time since before summer. I have a log burner so tend to sit in one room with that on when its really cold. Electric blankets also

Precipice · 16/10/2023 07:40

18 (on the thermostat anyway; I don't have an indoor thermometer) is what it gets turned down to at night. When I put it on during the day (it's always 'on' at the boiler, just practically turned on/off by the thermostat setting), I turn it to 22 on our thermostat.

mynellie · 16/10/2023 07:40

My thermostat is set at 17 at the moment and the heating clicked on the timer this morning and it is generally set at 18 when it gets colder, my body temperature is pretty warm thanks to flushes but other people need it to be warm

NotMyKallax · 16/10/2023 07:44

Mine is set to come on when the thermostat reaches 16, and it came on for the first time this morning.

At some point I will put it on so it’s 18 for a few hours during the day and then 16 overnight, but it doesn’t feel cold enough for that yet - it still warms up pretty quickly during the day.

HaddawayAndShite · 16/10/2023 07:44

Thermostats is set to 16. It’s clicked over a few times through the night. I have a toddler so can’t let it get too cold but it was too hot for me with the heating last night, but I run warm. Our house leaks the heat so I can’t afford to have it much warmer anyway tbh. Not any sort of life for little one in winter bundled up under blankets all day but it’s all I can do.

IsThatTheTimeAlready · 16/10/2023 07:44

I don't have a set temperature on mine, I just turn it up to what I feel warm at when sitting around.
Except for overnight when it's turned off.

DoAWheelie · 16/10/2023 07:45

Mine is set to 21.5 all year around. It only comes on during the day and stays off at night. Obviously if it's not cold enough it won't come on and doesn't for several months a year but both me and OH have several health conditions that are made worse by cold and it's the only way to reduce hospital admissions for us.

It's been on for a few weeks already now. Every family has their own needs though - do what works for you and ignore everyone else.

IHateLegDay · 16/10/2023 07:45

I set mine to 18.5

TheChosenTwo · 16/10/2023 07:48

Ours clicks in if it goes below 21 in most rooms, 20 in the kitchens.
Overnight, it’s set to click in if it drops below something like 12 - so not at all really.
Our house is a 30’s semi and we’ve renovated extensively, it’s very well insulated and retains heat well. Yesterday it was on by the time I came downstairs at breakfast, same as today.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 16/10/2023 07:49

The thermometer on the clock in our room read 17.8°C this morning and it still feels fine. Dc2 was shivering but was fine after a bit of breakfast. When it falls to less than 17°C, then we'll think about putting the heating on.

RampantIvy · 16/10/2023 07:50

Yet another heating thread.

I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already!

You're shocked? Why? Why so judgemental? It is cold. We have had frost, and our thermostat is set at 20 degrees, so our heating has been coming on several times.

Detached house on edge of Pennines.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 16/10/2023 07:51

As others have said the min. temp in your house is recommended to be at least 18c especially so if anyone vulnerable lives with you .

Bearcub101 · 16/10/2023 07:53

Woke up at 4:30am and the thermostat said 19 degrees but it felt cold. So I put the heating on for an hour. Toasty warm now. Will stay off throughout the day, and I will tune it in remotely about 5:00pm so it will be warm when I come in
from work. Hate being cold! I’m miserable when it is. So put it when when needed.

Heartbreaktuna · 16/10/2023 07:54

I'm surprised you're surprised! It was 2 degrees outside here in Scotland this weekend.

Wildflower2022 · 16/10/2023 07:58

I have mine set for 19, 18 overnight. Clicked on a few times over the last 4/5 days. I have a baby so need to make sure the temperature is adequate for him, he gets to cold if temp under 18c in the house even if bundled up. I would probably set thermostat to 16 if it were just me, I’m used to a slightly colder house!

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 16/10/2023 07:59

You can get an app on your phone that will let you read the temp. in any room you are in .

ShinyBandana · 16/10/2023 08:00

I don’t use the thermostat - I just turn it on when it feels cold. We just heat the rooms we are using so I turn it on in bedrooms for an hour before bedtime, and in living room and kitchen when we’re around. We don’t have it on overnight

Musiclover234 · 16/10/2023 08:00

I’m not surprised they’ve had it on! It’s gone from warm to frosty in days. It’s been on for an hour or two last 3/4 days now. it’s 16 in the house now but still in bed atm on leave

We usually do 18/19 morning and evening for a couple of hours unless bitter. I don’t like being cold but I don’t like the dry air of constant heating.

justlonelystars · 16/10/2023 08:00

Usual level of 21, but 24 for the living room in the evening when we want to be cosy and then 18 overnight. Hasn’t come on yet though, house has stayed warm enough.
