What temperature do you put your heating on?

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already! I said the general rule in our house is at any point under 16 I’ll put it on, and set it to 18 but turn it off when I go to bed as the kids are already warm in bed by then. Apparently I’m trying to freeze us all to death 😬 but it’s the temperature I like and the kids seem fine with it! Have you had your heating on yet?

If it drops below 18 I'll stick it on (as recommended by various health organisations) for 30/60 minutes. Off at night.

Pretendthatwearedead · 16/10/2023 14:36

Ours is set at 24 but we only put it on if we notice we are cold. It is generally only on for 2 or 3 hours a day except in winter when it is still only on for a few hours. Once our house heats up it tends to stay warm for some time.

TenderDandelions · 16/10/2023 14:40

It depends on the location of your thermostat. Ours is set to 17.5 (or rather, a guess mark half way between 15 and 20 on the dial!), but the bedrooms were at 21 degrees after an hour. The hallway is a bit draughty and cold, so 17.5 degrees there equates to much warmer around the rest of the house.

At 21 degrees I had to turn it off - I was doing some housework and was sweating! I'd like to turn it down to 16, but DH doesn't get the concept of the hallway being colder than the rest of the house (despite the copious thermometers I've put around the house to show him it's not 16 degrees) so always sneaks it back up again!

Crumpetdisappointment · 16/10/2023 14:29

surely that is ok in the night when you are sleeping?

18° is the maximum temperature a bedroom should be at night. Official workplace guidance is that 16° should the minimum temperature, unless the work involves a lot of physical activity, in which case it can 13°. I don’t know where the 18° figure comes from but can only imagine it has in mind people who never wear animal fibres or layers; if I dress properly I can be comfortable at 16° even if I’m sitting at my computer for several hours.

MaryGreenhill · 16/10/2023 14:57

Never have the heating on at night, no matter the temperature .

itscatnaptime · 16/10/2023 14:59

First cold morning today where I am, although appreciate other areas of the country will have been cold before now. I want to wait until November to put the heating on if I can.

nokidshere · 16/10/2023 15:04

I'd wait longer because I get up later but DS asked for it to be on as it was freezing when he got up for work at 5:30am today.

So 21° from 5:30-10, then 18° from 10-6, then 21° from 6-10;30 the off overnight.

Rosesandstars · 16/10/2023 15:14

21 in the afternoon/evening.

16-18 at night.

I wonder how many of these "I am quite happy with 18/16/-10" posters are the same ones complaining bitterly if the aircon is at 21 in an office

I would yes, I hate cold aircon in summer when I am dressed for the weather. I don't mind it at 26 but no lower if it's hot, but if there's no aircon I am comfortable up to 35.

Sarah2891 · 16/10/2023 16:02

Ours is set at 20 in the day and it's off at night.

OnlyTheBravest · 16/10/2023 16:03

The heating went on this weekend as the temperature definitely dropped. I heat the rooms during the day to 21c, as we all WFH and I can't work with cold fingers. Heating is off from late evening/overnight.
Finally got a smart meter and after playing round with it last winter I found for my house/comfortable temp switching it on for an hour in the morning then on again from early afternoon works well, until deep winter when it goes on all day.
I have fixed for next 3 years, so I know exactly how much I am paying.

This ^^

These threads are often populated by competitive underheating posters who live somewhere warmer than we do or don't feel the cold as much as we do.

I get that the cost of heating is prohibitive, but there is nothing as irritatiing as a morally superior poster who likes to freeze their arse off just because they feel it is character forming.

Quite.
I suspect they are the same posters who get apoplectic when the outside temperature reaches the dizzy heights of 18 degrees.

I did try turning the thermostat down last year, but DH is severely underweight due to health problems and he was utterly miserable.

For people who feel the cold easily just putting on another jumper doesn't suffice. The ambient temperature needs to be higher for them to be comfortable.

For me it's got nothing to do with being competitive. It's to do with cost mostly, if heating was free I'd have it higher but this would still only be 18.

I like to dress for the season. I want to come in, take my coat and boots off and leave my jumper and wool socks on. I enjoy cooler temperatures in winter and warmer ones on summer. I don't cope well with overheated (for me) houses in winter, they make me feel hot, headachey and unwell. In summer I love the warmth, I'm happy whilst most people at work are uncomfortable (no aircon).

I was the same when I was a stone underweight, though I understand we are all different.

It’s almost as if everyone is different?! Absolutely MINDBLOWING concept I know, but it’s easier to be a snarky prick than think I suppose.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/10/2023 18:48

I put my heating on for the first time yesterday. Thermostat is at 18C. I switch it off overnight though, at least until it's much colder outside.

Twentypastfour · 16/10/2023 18:48

Consistently below 10oC during the day (outside) I’d put it on as and when.

I have felt a bit cold today but it’s still not too bad.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 16/10/2023 18:53

Answering this question is like answering how long is a piece of string. Different house builds, different insulation/draughts/moisture, different thermostats, different positions for thermostats. I have individual smart valves on my rads as well so even if my heating is on it doesn't have to be on everywhere.

But my piece of string: thermostat is set to 17.5 in the morning and later in the evening. 16.5 in the day, 15 at night. But different rooms are set to different temps, so when the heating clicks on in the day, only downstairs is heated as that's where I am, and upstairs is usually warmer.

TigerQueenie · 16/10/2023 18:54

Its just always on. The thermostat is set at 18 in the day and 14 at night. It kicks in when it needs to.

Yes, for me I just don’t want to spend the money plus I feel guilt because of course, energy consumption etc. I’d rather just wear extra layers than spend it.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 16/10/2023 18:59

Ours isn't on yet but we have an electric radiator on the landing which is on for a few hours for background heat.

Scalottia · 16/10/2023 19:01

I was shocked I say, simply shocked!

🙄

ChickenNugget6 · 16/10/2023 19:03

Mine is in 20.5 from around 7am to 8pm :)

DeadbeatYoda · 16/10/2023 19:10

17 during the day, 9 at night.

JMSA · 16/10/2023 19:11

Georgian basement flat in Scotland here. Thermostat was reading 15.5 so I've set it to 18. I'll go nuts and keep it on until I go to bed! It really did feel cold. The kind that seeps right into you, so I'm not sure even my Oodie would have worked. The whole flat needed an injection of heat.
I'm a little nervous because for the first time ever this month, I'm on a variable tariff. I honestly have no idea how my first non-fixed bill is going to look 😬

LemonLight · 16/10/2023 19:13

Ours is set to 15 and it came on by itself for the first time last night.

MissDollyMix · 16/10/2023 19:16

18 by day, 16 by night. Any colder than that and I wake up from the cold.
