What temperature do you put your heating on?

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already! I said the general rule in our house is at any point under 16 I’ll put it on, and set it to 18 but turn it off when I go to bed as the kids are already warm in bed by then. Apparently I’m trying to freeze us all to death 😬 but it’s the temperature I like and the kids seem fine with it! Have you had your heating on yet?

Usually at 18 degrees, I just switch it on when I feel cold, but never at night as we're all warm enough in bed.

Alainlechat · 16/10/2023 19:23

There was a frost here in the South East this morning and the thermostat said around 17. I've put it on to 19 for a couple of hours this evening to take the edge off.

For my long fleece out and slippers for the first time this Autumn.

RagzRebooted · 16/10/2023 19:24

Same as you OP. Between 16 and 18 on the thermostat. Currently it's at 16/17 and I don't think it's actually on now but it was earlier (kids school was closed today or it would have been off most of the day). Bedrooms are about 19 degrees. Living room more like 18. Thermostat in in the hallway/landing so colder there than the rooms by a degree or two
Usually I control it by the thermostat, when I'm around, but kids are getting up earlier than me some days and get home a few hours before me, so I'll set the timer up later.

Theduchy · 16/10/2023 19:26

We have a nest smart heater thing which is set to 16 in the day if just me and DH home or 17 if kids (7 and 1) are home. Night is 14/15. House is an old victorian cottage type so it's come on quite a few times the last few days (we're North West).

Delpf · 16/10/2023 20:13

Ours clicks on at 15C and off at 18 or 19C. It's on already - we've had a few frosty nights now.

throughgrittedteeth · 16/10/2023 21:01

About 19 during the day (wfh a lot) 20 first thing and after school til about 9pm. I will click it on if I'm cold though through the day and have exhausted a reasonable amount of extra warmer clothing, because fuck being cold.

beguilingeyes · 17/10/2023 06:35

The whole putting on an extra jumper thing doesn't help hands and face though, and those are the bits I struggle with. Wearing gloves doesn't really work indoors.
I have an under active thyroid and feel the cold more than I used to.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/10/2023 07:07

21 here, I don't know how you're all standing the cold! It dropped to 19 yesterday so the heating went on as we were all feeling chilly despite jumpers.

It's odd because I wouldn't feel cold outside at 19 degrees, but it feels cold inside. It's an old, badly insulated house, maybe that's why?

Crumpetdisappointment · 17/10/2023 07:20

i relented this morning, just briefly, got through yesterday

Hbh17 · 17/10/2023 07:22

When I feel cold. I have no idea what the temperature is - we have an old system, so it doesn't show such details 🤣

My workplace heating is much warmer than my house. I'm comfortably sitting here next to a thermometer reading 14.6, at work it's 20+ but big open plan, high ceilings, doors left open, people walking behind me, and can feel cold at times. Or warm but cold at the same time so my jumper is on then off then on.

Validus · 17/10/2023 07:30

Our heating only kicks in if it’s 16 degrees or less in the hallway (where the thermostat is). And even then it’s set to be on for certain periods only - a possible total of 3 hours a day, increased to 5 in midwinter.

mondaytosunday · 17/10/2023 07:31
  1. I have the radiators off in my bedroom though. The thermostat is in the warmest room in the house.
Umph · 17/10/2023 07:31

We don’t have central heating. We do have a log burner Rut powers a couple of radiators but with two tiny children it’s a massive faff so we don’t bother. We’ll pop an electric heater on for a couple of hours if it gets a bit chilly but generally speaking it has to be single figures outside before we feel it’s necessary. According to my weather app it’s 8oc outside currently and I’m perfectly warm in my dressing gown! No idea what it is inside.

I remember last winter when I tried to keep the heating around 19/20 - I was wearing leggings, thick trousers over them, vest, long sleeve shirt, hoodie, a thick warm dressing gown over it all and fingerless gloves and massive thermal socks and still felt freezing. Horrible time.

Ibizafun · 17/10/2023 17:56

Underfloor heating part at 22.. although if I had my own way (not dh's) would be 24.

Ibizafun · 17/10/2023 17:56

Set not part

CosimoPiovasco · 27/10/2023 18:09

This is an interesting thread.
Has everyone got their heating on.
So far it’s just thermals for us, might put the wood burner on tonight. SE here temp this week 15-16 inside.

Heat goes right out of our house, we think ourselves lucky if the temp goes up by 1c all day in the rooms without wood burners. ie most of them
Just worried about the Mead not fermenting properly and our books getting ruined.🤣

So if we put the htg it will be set at 17/18. But as I said it will never ever reach that.

Crumpetdisappointment · 27/10/2023 18:37

hot water bottle in bed at night
just got home and put heating on, 17 degrees
its nearly november

Chalkdowns · 27/10/2023 18:46

Wood burner for the last couple of weeks in the evening but holding off for proper cold weather before I start burning oil to heat the whole house

enchantedsquirrelwood · 31/10/2023 15:47

Mine is on now - we thought the clocks going back was a good time to do it as it gets cold quickly once the sun has gone down.

An hour in the morning and two hours in the evening until it gets colder, then it will be on for longer.
