What temperature do you put your heating on?

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already! I said the general rule in our house is at any point under 16 I’ll put it on, and set it to 18 but turn it off when I go to bed as the kids are already warm in bed by then. Apparently I’m trying to freeze us all to death 😬 but it’s the temperature I like and the kids seem fine with it! Have you had your heating on yet?

18/19....Depends on the house though surely? And what you are doing? ...sitting around as a family watching tv or alone doing housework etc.

PestilencialCrisis · 16/10/2023 08:02

Different strokes for different folks. Some people will feel the cold more due to medications, immobility, age, work patterns, location, size and age of home, number of occupants, insulation effectiveness etc. Are you really "shocked" that not everyone has uniform heating requirements?

UseOfWeapons · 16/10/2023 08:03

Comes on for an hour in the morning, if the temperature is under 15.5C, and in the evening for about 3 hours, if temperature below 17.5C. It will come on at any point in the temperature falls below 14C. I turned it down by a degree last winter when I was worried about the heating bills, I may well turn it up again!
Victorian semi, but lots of blankets, cosy slippers, and electric blanket!

GOODCAT · 16/10/2023 08:04

Not got heating on yet, but once it gets cold enough it will be set to 18 for the times we have it on.

Acornsoup · 16/10/2023 08:07

21 degrees. 20 too cold, 22 too hot.

RampantIvy · 16/10/2023 08:08

We never have the heating on overnight unless it is well below freezing. We just don't need it as our duvet keeps us lovely and warm.

PinkRoses1245 · 16/10/2023 08:09

I’ve put it on 16 this morning. I’d always turn it off when going to bed though, mad to have it on overnight

dementedpixie · 16/10/2023 08:10

Somewhere between 16 and 19⁰C. Off overnight

BigBadaBoom · 16/10/2023 08:11

As the NHS advice is minimum 18 centigrade, I stick my thermostat to that during the day and 19 in the evening as we're moving around less. We've got smart heating so never manually switch the heating off, just set it to it's default 7 degrees for work / school times. Looking at the thermostat temperature history it stays between 18 and 20 degrees when someone's in the house.

ScarlettSunset · 16/10/2023 08:11

I put mine on yesterday. Thermostat is set to 20 for certain periods of the day. 18 at others. Anything less than 18 and I really struggle as I feel the cold dreadfully and my joints all seize up. Even at 18 degrees I'm usually wearing layers and have a blanket over me.

Scoobyblue · 16/10/2023 08:12

Thermostat set to 18 so comes on if under that during the day. Both of us work from home most days. Heating goes off between 9pm and 6.30am as don’t need it on overnight.

NashvilleQueen · 16/10/2023 08:13

I don't think you would have been even slightly shocked to hear people had their heating on if you'd had the conversation two years ago.

It's mid-October, there's been a significant drop in temperature and there was frost yesterday morning.

Assuming that there are no money concerns which mean you have to be extra careful with the heating I'm not sure a child shivering at breakfast (unless inappropriately dressed) is a great thing.

Mine was on this morning and will be again this evening if it's cold. Never have it on overnight.

AngelinaFibres · 16/10/2023 08:14

Big Victorian house. Thermostat set at 19.5. Heating on 7 til 10 in the morning then 4 til 10 in the evening but if the 2 woodburners are going then it rarely clicks on . Heating off all night

Itsjustmeee · 16/10/2023 08:15

18
but if we are drying stuff or it’s a bit colder we will put it on for an hour or so
I have a lovely heated Alaskan throw and it’s lush so I use that mainly and I use my oddie and snow shoes so I rarely feel cold

3WildOnes · 16/10/2023 08:26

20 in the morning and evening, 18 in the day, 13 overnight.

Diamondcurtains · 16/10/2023 08:28

I don’t have a thermostat so just turn it on when I’m cold. Never have the heating on at night at all. It gives me a headache.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 16/10/2023 08:28

18 during the day, 15 overnight and it stays on year round. It hasn’t come on at all over the summer but my view is that if it gets below 17, it’s time for heat!

It came on this morning for the first time.

While I’m not looking forward to the bills, I’ll be glad if it reduces the damp in the flat!

Coffeerum · 16/10/2023 08:32

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already!

Why is it shocking though? People should do whatever is comfortable in their own house.

I had the heating on this morning which was the first time, however I'm in London which has been a lot warmer than most of the country. If I lived further north I'm sure it would have already been on.

Ilikeyourdecor · 16/10/2023 08:35

Thermostat set to 18, it has come on in the last few days. We often turn it up to 19.5. DH would have it at 21 if he had his way.

It's never on at night.

JamieFrasersBitOnTheSide · 16/10/2023 08:35

What is it about all the heating threads every year in October? Is there some sort of competition who can freeze their arses off the longest before putting the heating on?

We’ve had the heating on for weeks. There’s nothing shocking about it, @MyYorkshireFarm unless of course you can’t comprehend that people do actually live in colder climates.

Fightyouforthatpie · 16/10/2023 08:38

I wonder how many of these "I am quite happy with 18/16/-10" posters are the same ones complaining bitterly if the aircon is at 21 in an office

EveryKneeShallBow · 16/10/2023 08:38

Some people are easily shocked! We’ve had frost overnight here and can see snow on the hills. Our thermostat kicks the heating off if it goes below 19 in the day, but it’s off overnight. Five bedroom detached in Scotland.

Panjandrum123 · 16/10/2023 08:39

Ours is set to 18. It’s been coming on the last couple of days, but the radiators are warm not hot. First thing 6am till 8am and then in the evening 6pm till 11pm. Bought a dehumidifier which works brilliantly on damp washing and keeping the moisture levels down.

Can’t afford for thermostat to be higher and DP would find it way too hot. When we had new carpets, he felt too hot so turned the thermostat down without telling me and for days the heating didn’t come on. The house was so fecking cold and felt damp. I bled the radiators, checked the boiler. Eventually looked at the thermostat and went ballistic, he knows I feel the cold, where he doesn’t. We also have plenty of blankets for me and the kids if we do feel chilly on the sofa.

Gizlotsmum · 16/10/2023 08:39

Currently set to maintain 18 during the day. Down to 10 when we go to bed, tho this may go up slightly as it gets colder. Max indoors is usually 21 dependant on outside temp and what I am doing, wfh so can get chilly sat at desk some days

PurBal · 16/10/2023 08:46

What @PestilencialCrisis says tbh.

At first I read this and thought “do people really put their heating in when it’s over 20?” Before remembering that when I lived in a hotter country it would be 32 outside and my aircon was set to 26. (We were somewhere in the middle amongst people we knew, some would set it to 18 others didn’t use aircon at all).

Now I’m used to it being cooler so it came on for the first time today because it went under 18. It’s off now and currently reading 17.5. I’ve insisted DS1 (2yo) wears slippers on our cold floor. I have a baby currently still in his sleeping bag. But will remain in multiple layers today. Off overnight.

Everyone is different.
