What temperature do you put your heating on?

I’m sure this has been done to death over the years but got into a discussion with friends over the weekend and I was shocked that they’ve all put their heating on already! I said the general rule in our house is at any point under 16 I’ll put it on, and set it to 18 but turn it off when I go to bed as the kids are already warm in bed by then. Apparently I’m trying to freeze us all to death 😬 but it’s the temperature I like and the kids seem fine with it! Have you had your heating on yet?

0° outside this morning and 15° in my kitchen, it's not that shocking that some people have their heating on. If I could afford it I would have mine on too!

RandomButtons · 16/10/2023 09:30

It kicks in automatically at 14. During the winter we have it set to come in for hour in morning and two in evening at 18, then boost it as and when.

our house does not retain heat, kitchen regularly falls to 11 degrees overnight. It’s been very expensive to heat. We had our bills fixed two years ago at old low rates but that’s just run out and I’m dreading this winter - especially as I work from home and have health conditions aggravated by cold weather.

I finally put my heating on yesterday, (London, so it had been warm), and it's at 20 degrees, as I do feel the cold a bit.

Its never on overnight.

CasperGutman · 16/10/2023 09:34

In theory our heating has been "on" all summer, in that it would have come on if the thermostat called for heat. It hasn't, as the house has been above the set temperature of 18°C. It came on for the first time last night (usually the heating would be off overnight, but I'd left it on as an elderly relative is staying who is often awake in the night and feels the cold).

BCCoach · 16/10/2023 09:35

Thermostat set to 17 between 6.30am and 10pm and off at night. Heating came on yesterday for the first time since April.

beguilingeyes · 16/10/2023 09:35

I'm in London and it was 3 degrees this morning. I put the heating on for an hour this morning while showering. Hopefully we won't need it this evening (out all day).
I was trying to hold out until November but it's been cold for the last couple of days. I try to huddle under my heated throw in the evenings. My husband doesn't feel it.
Thermostat at 19. I look back and laugh at the days when I blithely used to whack it up to 23.

Natsku · 16/10/2023 09:38

Put the heating on a couple of weeks ago. Usually would go on sooner than that (I'm in Finland) but September was unusually warm so didn't need it, then October hit and it cooled down (even got snow last week) so heating is needed. Its on constantly, around 22 degrees depending on the room (electric radiators in each room, bedrooms a tad cooler) except for DD's room because she hates having the heating on her room, I just make sure her door stays open during the day so some of the heat from the rest of the house can get in there.

Wexone · 16/10/2023 09:39

no heating on yet as waiting for payday to buy oil. its bloody 1k thus year and that should get me to march depending on winter. lucky well insulated home. thermostats set at 20 in living areas and 18 in bedrooms. so kicks in then. though where I live hasn't been cold till this weekend. was trying to get ti bank hol weekend before light fire but did cave this weekend. now need to sort coal and sticks-lucky have some left over from last year
I would advise to people not to switch off heating in rooms they not using as the cold from them rooms will seep into other rooms you are trying to heat therfore costing more money. keep them at a low temperature instead

MyYorkshireFarm · 16/10/2023 13:21

I’m not being competitive, just trying to save money and avoid using it a little longer if I can.

I usually put it on if the house gets much below 14. Haven't had it on so far but today is the first day my home was hovering near that temperature. Just feels like a shock because it hadn't been below 20 for months, and suddenly it's fallen by a quarter.

Desecratedcoconut · 16/10/2023 13:31

20.5c daytime and 16c nighttime, although the heating won't drop low enough for the overnight to kick in until winter.

Back when the cost of gas rocketed I reduced those temps to try and mitigate the increase - but it made me fucking miserable. The difference between the two situations was about 4000kwh/gas - less than £400 which I can fortunately take on the chin - and much happier for it.

It doesn't necessarily save you money as your belongings need warmth too.
I lived away from my partner for a year and with working long hours he didn't put the heating on at all during the week with the house often at 13-14 degrees in the evening and 9 overnight

We had to replace our mattress and the springs rushed solid and our fridge freezer became rusty despite only being 4 years old. There were other goods we had to replace too. It was a damp house due to its construction/age and inadequate heating made it a very damp health.

Keeping the chill off the house is to the benefit of the house as well as person.

NewLeafAgain · 16/10/2023 13:37

I think 18 is comfy with a jumper and something cosy on my feet. My youngest was running round in her knickers yesterday and thermostat said 17 but she was adamant she didn't need more clothes!
However, I feel like I rarely sit down in my house until the evening, so maybe you just need to get your family to get up and do housework etc to warm them up when they feel chilly!

Bacarach · 16/10/2023 13:37

18c and then we put ours on.
We are both hardcore and would rather sit in a jumper/dressing gown/fling a throw over us/go to bed.

Agree, so many issues arising with homes and belongings getting damp, it also causes health issues, and condensation mould can be very damaging.

lowest it should be for healthy folks is 18, so the op is letting it go considerably below that, but she’s not alone. Many even let it go lower, due to being unable to afford it. It’s a sad state of affairs when so many can’t afford to heat their homes.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 16/10/2023 13:40

Ours went on this morning for the first time, DD was desperate. I’ve set it to be on 5.30am -8am on weekdays for now. In the evenings will stick with a fire if downstairs and when we need to bunging it on for an hour upstairs before bed. We were really mean with the heating at the beginning of last winter and we ended up with mould upstairs, so being mindful of that this year

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 16/10/2023 13:42

Set to 18 for now but that will creep up to 19, can’t afford 20 anymore unless we have family round as don’t want them to be cold whilst here for dinner

FizzyStream · 16/10/2023 13:52

Ours is on 18 during the day and off at night at the moment. We turn it up when we get up in the morning as it gets down to about 14-15 degrees.

Scarlettpixie · 16/10/2023 13:52

Thermostat is set to 19 in the day and the heating has come on in the morning now for the past 2 or 3 days. It is set to about 10 overnight (10-6) so never comes on then.

Oddly when it is colder out, it seems colder in the house so I will end up putting it up to 20 at some point. I don’t get why that is as you would think the temperature is the temperature.

I am often chilly in my office so put a fan heater on for 10 mins every now and again rather than heat the whole house. I am also rather partial to a wheat bag 😊

pizzaHeart · 16/10/2023 14:00

I can’t understand the question “have you got your heating on?” It’s always on, the whole year. Our thermostat is on different temperatures depending if it’s night or day, are we in or away.
16 in general would be too cold for me however it very much depends where your thermostat is. In some houses 16 downstairs might mean 21 in bedrooms upstairs.

Stillanothernamechange · 16/10/2023 14:17

Put the heating on this afternoon because it got to 13°C (kitchen is currently in a state of demolition so with all the other things causing me discomfort at present, only noticed the temperature because I looked at the heating app).

Usually try not to put it above 18° but occasionally whack one of the radiators up to 20° for an hour. A healthy person is perfectly fine below 18° with the right clothing on. We never have the heating on overnight because we have good duvets.

The house is well ventilated to avoid damp (previous owners sealed everything up and kept the heating on; we had to have all the plaster knocked off when we moved in because the damp had got so bad).

ReadyForPumpkins · 16/10/2023 14:19

Thermostat at 20C. The heating is always on and controlled by the thermostat. It didn't come on until the weekend when it turned really cold.

ReadyForPumpkins · 16/10/2023 14:21

I also agree it should not dip under 18C unless you want an unhealthy house. I remember seeing something about this. Your metabolism slows down too when the room is code. It's not good for you.

surely that is ok in the night when you are sleeping?

ShellySarah · 16/10/2023 14:33

It was 2°c this morning. In London. I put the heating on.
