There is no Southern Ireland

So sick of hearing people say say Southern Ireland when referring to anywhere outside of Northern Ireland. Any place outside of Northern is the Republic of Ireland. We do not have southern Ireland..

Fair enough.
Doesn't stop it being frustrating but ok.

Just so long as we win the Rugby.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 23:32

it’s what the republic was called when she was growing up
She grew up fast then?

Was just about to say this.

My mum is from NI, my dad is from Ireland.

I remember writing cards to his family many years ag and adding Eire (don't know how to do the fada on my phone), though.

Press and hold the E key.

Everyone in Ireland knows the answer to this question.
And so should everyone in the UK.

I don't know, I don't think it's realistic to expect everyone in the UK to be up to date with everything that is going on in Northern ireland.

I bet people in Belfast don't know everything that is going on in Wales either.

UK is big----

Mooshamoo · 13/10/2023 23:33

Does it annoy Irish people on here , it being called southern ireland. I have to say ,it doesn't really bother me

Doteycat · 13/10/2023 23:34

You cannot compare Wales to the North.
The UK should know what's what in the north

We do not need to know what's what in Wales.
Is it not taught in school, the GFA?

BlueSky2023 · 13/10/2023 23:34

@Elvis1956

Fuck me, the whole of Israel is going to shit. So the republican Irish need to chip in.. get a fucking life...In 20 years you will get a united Ireland. Just shut the fuck up. We will get tired of the pain of unionist bull shit.

Calm yourself down dear

You don't think British people should be aware of a very recent civil war within their own country? And the peace process?
The bar must be set very low for British education.

JaneJeffer · 13/10/2023 23:35

It got stuck on Dev @ColleenDonaghy 🤣

Given that you have left no one on Mn who has read any of your posts in any doubt of your hatred for Ireland, that’s hardly surprising, surely?

SabrinaThwaite · 13/10/2023 23:35

The British Isles aren’t big … but they are complicated.

<ducks and runs>

eggandonion · 13/10/2023 23:35

Up the north there are wonderful wee traybakes and wee buns served in church halls.
Down south there is dry free state cake. But very good plants at protestant church sales.
I am from NI. But now if I go further south I fall into the sea.

cartagenagina · 13/10/2023 23:37

I have never heard anyone refer to “Southern Ireland” meaning Eire. I am nearly sixty and never heard this once.

What I have heard is people talking about Southern Ireland meaning the south of Ireland. Same as I live in Southern England.

I live in Ireland.

I don't think its realistic to expect everyone in the UK to know everything that is going on in Northern Ireland, no.

I have to say, I worked in England for two years. Nobody there thought at all about northern Ireland. It wasnt important to them. They never once thought about it. They had their own lives going on.

People are people the world over. They tend to think about what is happening in their own region.

dry free state cake
😂

Pigriver · 13/10/2023 23:39

Child of the 80's here growing up in northern England and I can tell you I knew bugger all about Ireland other then there were terrorists and loads of fighting when I was a kid. We never visited or ever even met an Irish person.

I then moved to a city with for Uni and met 1 whole Irish person. 10 years later I met and then married a man born to 2 Irish parents. One 'from the North' and one 'from the South' as always explained by them. Even now if we visit the Northern lot will always ask 'are you off to the south?' Meaning the house in Cavan which is not in the south at all but they mean 'over the border'.

If you ask any if them their nationality they will vehemently say 'Irish' especially those in the North and are not entirely happy with being British.
You can obviously see what side their loyalties lie/lied/layed (it's late!) Back in the day. Added to the fact I was raised C of E and they are Catholic it hasn't always been the easiest of times.....

I generally think that because Irish politics never impacted on the majority of England/Wales/Scotland many people never took a lot of notice as therefore are pretty clueless. Shocking I know, I've had to gen up but I know my family still have no real idea.

It.

Disgusting.

Doteycat · 13/10/2023 23:40

To be fair, I'm currently wishing i lived in Poldark.
Is it OK to call it that?
Can't remember if it's Devon or Cornwall but dear god he's gorgeous.....

eggandonion · 13/10/2023 23:42

Compare dry cake served in opw cafes with amazing cake served in Northern Ireland garden centres...I like my cake. Compare avoca cafe cookies to traybakes in wee home bakery cafes...food of the gods (and reason for my cholesterol being so high).

Mooshamoo · 13/10/2023 23:43

It's definitely not realistic to expect everyone in England, Wales and Scotland to know everything that is going on in Northern Ireland.

Those people will cover Northern Irish history in school, that is probably going to be one module for five years max.

Then when they leave school, where are they going to hear about northern Ireland? They are going to hear about it occasionally on the news. That is why we can't expect them to know everything.

And that is why it is good for people to ask questions on here.

Think it’s filmed in Cornwall but the actor is Irish I think!
