I feel so sorry for everyone involved in this war in the Middle East. So many people think it can't affect us but it could so easily escalate with Russia and the US getting involved. I'm quite scared tbh. Anyone else?

I am worried. I believe Israel is a nuclear state too.

Yes they are, they stole nuclear weapons from the US.

Not sure Russia has a lot left to offer in practical support to anyone.

It has oil, which is energy, which is basically the most essential thing needed to survive. Its economy is based around commodities which every country needs so much that they will kill to get hold of.

Compare that to other developed countries with economies that make most of their money from, say, tourism. Or coffee shops on every corner.

Russia is indispensable to the world and powerful beyond belief, which is why we are so threatened by it.

are you on something?

So sensible he pulled out of Afghanistan leaving all the weapons behind. Guess where those went.

I suppose he’s unlikely to be awake for long enough to make a decision so there’s that.

I have wondered how many of the weapons and equipment that were left behind in Afghanistan are now in Hamas hands. 😢

No. I'm.not going to worry about WW3. We has this at the start of Ukraine war. But it's not WW3 yet. I'm sure at some point in the near future their will be a war yo shift power away from the west. But I can't stop it so why fret over it?

I do wonder if the history books will write that WW3 started with Ukraine and that these latest massacres in the Middle East are just the next chapter.

It has money and is in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa) which is the greater concern when you look at their tech infrastructure (China) and nuclear capabilities (India)

The Russian govt and armed forces are barely surviving their vanity war against Ukraine, and only by resorting to asking North Korea and Iran for weapons and by emptying the Russian prisons to throw untrained bodies into the 'meatgrinder' of the front. They have no capacity to intervene militarily or economically in Israel-Palestine, even if they wanted to - they can't even maintain their military position in what they regard as their sphere of influence.

Please don't let BRICS worry you - it's just a talking shop and PR exercise that grew out of something written by a Goldman Sachs analyst. Russia has been desperate to turn it into something meaningful for many years, but the members have no shared interests beyond opposition (diplomatic, not military) to US dominance, and showing the world that they are serious global players - not that China needs to bother with that. It's as serious a military, economic, and diplomatic presence as the Eurovision Song Contest.

@WarProf

Is this actually true though?

We were told the same thing when Russia annexed Crimea. But, effectively, they won and now Crimea is part of Russia. The media went suspiciously silent on the issue at that point 😂

I was under the impression that Russia was winning the Russian-speaking territories in Ukraine that it has gone after. But I may be wrong, I can't really tell through all the propaganda on both sides!

uhtredofbattenberg · 12/10/2023 16:40

I worry the same, OP.

DH says, no, it won't. But how does he know? Not like he's really an expert on world politics or any politics for that matter.

World wars dont have a start and finish date - every country or group of people have a different take of its dates, they start as seperate conflicts that merge into one.

The world at war, Im pretty uncomfortable at the thought of many conflicts starting in a close period of time, with links to the same state actors will give us our next (overdue based on mankinds temprement) World war.

I hope cool heads remain and nuclear weapons dont start to get thrown around.

On the bright side, the overpopulation problem will be at least in part be fixed and this "green agenda" can get in the bin.

@GettingStuffed An American with sarcasm. Though was mostly a British thing.

I'm American and sarcasm is my superpower. My daughter also got an enlarged sarcasm gene.

But, my ancestors are English, Scottish and Dutch.😎😏

Lol I was wondering about the DH consultation. You can have your own opinion you know uthredofbattenberg.

Thegoodbadandugly · 12/10/2023 16:56

Everytime a country goes to war the press take great delight in trying to worry the public to death, no I don't think it will.

PurpleWisteria1 · 12/10/2023 15:30

Where is that actually getting you?
Honestly this is one of the downsides of MN and forums as a whole.
MSM plays its games and headlines. Gets everyone is a panic. Anxious people come on here starting headlines on WW3. People who may have not actually given it much thought or stayed away from news deliberately are now also anxious.
Where exactly is that getting anyone? How is that helping?
At the start of the Ukraine war I almost panicked myself into a heart attack with the thought that this was it- it’s all over. All the threads on MN- a hundred over anxious people shouting doomsday daily.
One weekend I remember I was frozen with fear. Couldn’t even think straight and was convinced that I wouldn’t see next month.
This was just when covid was all lifting so life had been pretty awful with worry about kids missing school, lockdowns and illness for 2 years.
I had to shut off MN completely for 3 months. Didn’t watch a scrap of news anywhere. Turned all news off my phone as it kept popping up with Vlad goes nucular etc.
It was shame as I like MN for lots of other topics.
If this all starts again in going to have to shut it down again.
It helps no one here to start any topics about WW3

I definitely don’t think anyone should start threads like this. I actually reported one of those silly Ukraine ones “omg we are all
going to die”. It’s self indulgent scare mongering. But mumsnet is not the news, it’s a form of social media.

I don’t blame you for not reading mumsnet threads if you are prone to anxiety. But not reading the news and claiming blissful ignorance like another poster is pathetic tbh. We aren’t children that need protecting from the worlds evils. I don’t know any self respecting adults that literally have no idea what’s going on in the world because it makes them too scared.

lol, you must be having a laugh. Everyone slates Trump but there were no wars when he was president. Leaders of other countries respected Trump, they don't respect Biden.
Biden is senile, all he does is give billions to Ukraine and allows millions of illegals in to USA via the southern border, causing utter chaos in NY & everywhere else. He is a disgrace!

Although Trump didn't directly start any wars, decisions taken by his administration inflamed situations in multiple locations throughout the world. A few examples for you:

  1. Moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.
  2. Personal attacks on Kim Jong Un (dictators have fragile egos!) - North Korea called Trump an 'erratic old man'.
  3. Deciding to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan (the Doha Agreement).
  4. Pressuring the government of Afghanistan to release thousands of Taliban fighters from prison (what do you think happened to them?).
  5. Withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2018 (Iran resumed its nuclear activities).
  6. Withdrawing US troops from northeastern Syria, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and escape of Islamic State prisoners.
Aquestioningmind · 12/10/2023 17:00

If it does lead to WWIII chances are humanity won’t last long anyway. Everyone has nuclear weapons these days so it’ll be over quickly.

No point stressing about it. It’ll either happen (and we’ll all die quickly) or it won’t (in which case you’ll have spent time stressing for no reason).

I know the above isn’t positive but realistically Mel and Dave from Yorkshire (aka general Brits) can’t do anything to change it so their time is best spent focussing elsewhere.

There's so many threads on about the conflict that cause anxiety with people worrying about war. This one is quite reassuring really compared to others. I think it's the MSM that causes people to worry, . If people would get worried about these threads, then watching the news would be petrifying. Thank goodness for Mumsnet I say.

Oh please not more of this. We had this about Ukraine and some site members were bordering on suicide they had been frightened that badly, I saw and read it all. According to plenty we should have all been dead by nuclear war by now. We're still here last time I checked.

There's nothing you, I or anybody else on MN can do about it regardless.

Leave the panicking inducing headlines to the news. It's easier to avoid.

You are right in theory and I get what you are saying… the trouble is the news we are being fed isn’t balanced, fair, not remotely neutral and is deliberately scaremongering.
I avoid it at all costs generally.

Every few years we have to go through the same old song and dance in the Middle East. And every time people say it's the end of the world. Nothing will change until the Palestinians and Israelís sit down at the table and find a way to share. The Israelí government response of complete blockade will only ensure a continuation of violence in the future. In five years time we'll be singing this very same old song. It's getting very boring. 😴
