To worry this war might lead to WW3.

I feel so sorry for everyone involved in this war in the Middle East. So many people think it can't affect us but it could so easily escalate with Russia and the US getting involved. I'm quite scared tbh. Anyone else?

I'm glad we have Biden in the White House as I believe he's sensible and won't get America dragged into it.

You know that the US sent warships into the area straightaway right - with the express reason to provide a deterrent to Iran getting more involved.
Also I believe the US foreign secretary is visiting the area today.
They are absolutely not "staying out of it"

Can we not just be horrified for all the civilians involved instead of making it about us?

People can be horrified for the civilians AND worried about us or other things. Concern isn’t limited to 1 thing.

ketchup07070 · 12/10/2023 15:13

I understand the anxiety, but it's also likely to be over quite quickly. Israel has an army, is a rich country and well supplied with weapons and support by the US. Gaza is tiny, poor, has no food, water, electricity, medicines and doesn't have an official army. Tragic as the outcomes may be, it is just as likely to be finished in a week or so as it is to escalate.

Why would you think that. He might not do so publicly, but as ever, you have to watch what goes on behind the scenes. For example did you know that successive Israeli governments led by Netanyahu have propped up Hamas with indirect funding to undermine the Palestinian Authority led by Abbas ? Hypocrisy is everywhere. And before I get flamed I have no time for Hamas - what they did was unconscionable. But I have real problems with this, and with what Israel is doing in the name of protecting their citizens. They are flattening Gaza in the name of wiping out Hamas, with no consideration of the innocent citizens who are paying the price.

are you on something?

So sensible he pulled out of Afghanistan leaving all the weapons behind. Guess where those went.

I suppose he’s unlikely to be awake for long enough to make a decision so there’s that.

😂about sleepy ol’ Biden…oh I needed that laugh.

Biden is the best option of the two currently available, because although he (like Trump) is too old and has mental deficits, at least he wasn't a raging sociopathic narcissist before he began to decline. I feel so sorry for ordinary decent Americans right now.

Edited

No, he’s verging on incompetent and is said to be suffering from dementia - which makes him the perfect foil to be manipulated by those with their own agendas.

Might? It will and we're sleepwalking into it. Look at the pro-Hamas anti Semitic sentiment and protests already taking place globally. There may not be fighting on Israeli borders but there will be pockets of unrest around the globe due to protests and clashes.

Edited

It's not anti-Semitic to care about Palestinian civilians.

I think that’s thoughtless, verging on offensive.
I, and most other people, most definitely ARE thinking of the families missing their children, the people whose homes and families have been destroyed. Many of us are happy to forgo a “blissful bubble” in order to empathise and get behind those less fortunate right now.

Where is that actually getting you?
Honestly this is one of the downsides of MN and forums as a whole.
MSM plays its games and headlines. Gets everyone is a panic. Anxious people come on here starting headlines on WW3. People who may have not actually given it much thought or stayed away from news deliberately are now also anxious.
Where exactly is that getting anyone? How is that helping?
At the start of the Ukraine war I almost panicked myself into a heart attack with the thought that this was it- it’s all over. All the threads on MN- a hundred over anxious people shouting doomsday daily.
One weekend I remember I was frozen with fear. Couldn’t even think straight and was convinced that I wouldn’t see next month.
This was just when covid was all lifting so life had been pretty awful with worry about kids missing school, lockdowns and illness for 2 years.
I had to shut off MN completely for 3 months. Didn’t watch a scrap of news anywhere. Turned all news off my phone as it kept popping up with Vlad goes nucular etc.
It was shame as I like MN for lots of other topics.
If this all starts again in going to have to shut it down again.
It helps no one here to start any topics about WW3

I didn't say it was. I said the pro Hama's rhetoric is antisemitic

What do you think they are protesting globally then?

Crazykatie · 12/10/2023 15:39

There is no risk whatever of Iraq attacking Israel, the US is moving close to Israel and showing support to stop THEM escalating the war, also to stop Egypt getting involved.
Hezbollah in Lebanon will try to get involved and if Israel need help the US will provide it

briggs1 · 12/10/2023 15:33

The protests I've seen appear to be individuals wanting another Holocaust. "Gas the Jews" and a sarcastic "oh dear I'm sorry your family have died" are two phrases I've seen in videos. One from Australia one in the UK.

I think Russia has its hands full elsewhere to be honest.

A war in the middle east would be greatly to Russia's advantage - a nice shiny new distraction away from Ukraine for the rest of the world to look at.

I don't doubt that there has been at the bare minimum a decent amount of "pot stirring" from the Russians in the background in the lead up to this. They're very pally with Iran.

DelightfullyDotty · 12/10/2023 15:45

Didn’t we got through all this when Russia invaded Ukraine? I spent a couple of weeks in a panic and even had food packed in my car in a ridiculous effort to feel more in control. Had a vague plan to drive to Scotland….not sure what I’d have done after I’d eaten all the biscuits in the car😄.

It hasn’t even entered my head that the current situation could escalate and I’m clearly bonkers!

Why Scotland?!?
(Also, we have food, and also the best biscuits in the world so you'd have been fine on that front).

lol, you must be having a laugh. Everyone slates Trump but there were no wars when he was president. Leaders of other countries respected Trump, they don't respect Biden.
Biden is senile, all he does is give billions to Ukraine and allows millions of illegals in to USA via the southern border, causing utter chaos in NY & everywhere else. He is a disgrace!

I think Trump kept some of the world's most worrying leaders in check by using Nixon's madman strategy. It seemed to work on Kim Jong Un.

I accept it might not have been contrived!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 12/10/2023 15:54

Why Scotland?!?

Possibly because that's where the UK's nuclear weapons are held?!?!

AbbeyGailsParty · 12/10/2023 15:58

Their differences and arguments go back a thousand years or more. Blows up every few years. Angry, bitter men thinking they’ll get glory in murdering their “ enemies” and don’t give a toss about the lives and living conditions of their citizens. If both sides were run by women only it’s get sorted for good

bronkie · 12/10/2023 15:58

Not all Arab countries want involved in this shit and not all Arab countries are equal in terms of their appetite for conflict. Many of the wealthier ones just want to live out their normal lives with their trips abroad and their luxury cars. They don't want their part of the world a war zone. They want to keep their money. It is poverty and manipulation in certain Arab countries that fuels the zealots. It would be very difficult for a "them and us war" to develop from this. I'm not saying they don't channel money etc into Hamas but greater participation is unlikely.

I think highly of Biden too. But he is really showing his age. I worry about that and the power vacuum it would leave if something happens... He can barely string a sentence together sometimes.

The US is actually sending a very clear message for Iran to stay out of it.

For what other reason do you think the naval battle group has been sent to the Med?
