To think Starmer seriously needs a better haircut

The current hair is just awful, a weird 50s throwback style. Why isn't the Labour party hiring people to style him to look (and sound) professional for leadership? It's not enough these days just to be yourself and jog along. It's serious.

I'd rather have a competent leader who is focussed on fixing the absolute basket case our public services are at the moment, than a lying corrupt venal prime minister who spends money getting "styled" to appeal to the electorate.

AdamRyan · 12/10/2023 08:52

I'm not talking about Sunak but BoJo was a joke with his hair/rumpled suits, and then Truss and her "iron lady mark 2" look.
Although Sunaks trousers are always a bit short in my opinion, which is strange for such a tiny man.

Papillon23 · 12/10/2023 08:53

I don't think it can be the haircut unless you have a similar problem with Rishi.

Unfortunately OP is right. Starmer is not standout. Now, we are due a boring leader, history shows us the swings that go from charisma and looks to grey and boring. Starmer gives me the creeps, personal opinion. He is soft, has no neck, greasy hair, looks doughy, looks a bit like an old lady, and has zero charisma. He whines when he speaks. That may not matter, policy is more important, and Labour are going to be voted in, but he may not last long, and certainly will be a non entity on the world stage.

It's his greasy hair that I can't stand!

You just sound irrational in your dislike of him, and I think he will do very well on the world stage. He is serious, sensible and intelligent which is what other world leaders appreciate.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 12/10/2023 09:01

Slightly off topic but when Starmer got glittered on Tuesday I was reminiscing that I spent a good part of the early 90s trying to get that effect on my hair before going out clubbing. Grin

I can imagine Starmer on the world stage but definitely not Angela Rayner.

pointythings · 12/10/2023 10:22

@Freysimo I reckon she will do very well with political representatives from countries that aren't mired in classis. She's a straight talking no bullshit person, which will go over well with the pragmatic Dutch for starters.

This isn't a discussion of Labour policies, but about looking the part to get elected. Starmer needs a better haircut to be taken seriously by voters across the board. Polling says people are doubtful about him, and part of it is because of how he looks.

Can you post a link to the polls about his haircut please?

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2023 10:26

I don’t give a shiny what his hair looks like. Neither should you. If you were commenting on a female MO, you’d be turn to shreds and rightly so. Grow up and engage your brain.

His instant reaction to the man with the glitter was excellent. Clearly a reasonable man.

verdantverdure · 12/10/2023 10:27

I like a PM with no nonsense hair tbh.

I don't like to think of him wasting time having his strands titivated to look like Harry Styles.

My husband's hair isn't too dissimilar to Keir Starmer's. The kids call him "The Captain" (from Ghosts)

mummymeister · 12/10/2023 10:28

I would suggest he reverses that charisma bypass operation first personally. He has no sincerity or warmth. I dont trust him. He is a bit like that bland item on a menu that you choose if you either dont like or are allergic to everything else.

Freysimo · 12/10/2023 10:02

I don't think Starmer looks too bad - I mean he's not an attractive man - but then most politicians aren't. He looks smart, tidy, decent suit, his hair isn't that great but then who the hell votes for an entire party and manifesto based on the hair of the leader? Look at Trump! The worst hair on the planet and he was the flipping US president.

But Angela Rayner is awful - she looks like she should be standing behind a bar rather than the deputy leader of the Labour party and the foul rants that come out of her mouth - well the less said about those the better. But again, Trump? Also foul-mouthed, insulting, rude and look where it got him.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 12/10/2023 10:34

I like Starmer’s hair. There’s a ‘50s matinee idol vibe about it. And it’s not too different from Rishi Sunak’s anyway.

It’s Starmer’s ‘timid accountant’ nasal voice I can’t bear. (And the jargony, sound-bitey retread-Blair direction of Labour now.)

As for ‘we need dullness right now’. Surely Sunak fits that bill?

Fightyouforthatpie · 12/10/2023 10:38

RogueFemale · 12/10/2023 02:42

Yes, the electorate is generally ignorant. And also apathetic, - over 30% don't bother to vote.

How much of that is due to our shit electoral system OP (since you are such an expert Psephologist)? Most places I've lived, voting anything other than Tory is pointless as a nemotode with a blue rosette would get a huge majority - I can't blame people for not bothering to vote when even if all of the missing 30% did, the result would still be another Tory MP.

VineRipened · 12/10/2023 10:42

I haven’t spent one nano second noticing Starmer’s hair.

I despair at the mentality of anyone who takes this seriously, really.

Fightyouforthatpie · 12/10/2023 10:44

What makes you say that? Do you mean how she dresses? Or something else?

and the foul rants that come out of her mouth - well the less said about those the better
Can you give some examples (aside from the Tory Scum one for which she's apologised)?

pointythings · 12/10/2023 10:52

And this thread in a nutshell is the UK's problem - the endless obsession with style over substance. It goes all the way from children and school uniform to political leaders and it holds the UK back. It's not a coincidence that those countries with the same school uniform fetish are often British former colonies (Kenya et al) or societies obsessed with conformity (China, South Korea etc.).

Time to grow up and start judging on merit.

Of course I mean how she dresses.

And yes, I mean the 'Tory scum' comments. She apologised? Oh, well that's alright then Hmm

It's more than any Tory has done for their disgusting comments on asylum seekers. It's more than 30p Lee has done for his comments on food bank users.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 12/10/2023 11:00

BlackForestCake · 12/10/2023 08:23

His haircut is the least offensive thing about him. A much bigger problem is that he's got two faces and no backbone.

Summed up perfectly. Weak and spineless.

Or the disgusting things Gullis/Patel & Boris have said.

So you disapprove of the way she dresses.

And of a single comment and not "foul mouthed rants" in the plural since you can't enumerate a single additional one of these "rants".

I think people who are sneering at her really need to ask themselves what they want from politics - and as several posters have pointed out, perhaps consider holding all MPs the the same standards - there is a rag-tag bunch of ne'r do wells on the Tory benches who have been far more "foul mouthed" but that's Ok because the are not (shudder) working class women from (bigger shudder) the North of England?

Dotjones · 12/10/2023 11:41

Of all the things I'd change about Starmer, the haircut is the least of the problems. Maybe come up with some solid, plausible policies and actually try to win power by being a good alternative to the Tories rather than pinning hopes on the Tories continuing to fuck things up?
