To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

oh this takes me back, I always put mine in babygrows, nothing like a newborn in a new white babygrow!

We did not get to learn the sex in those days before birth so I bought loads of white and yellow and mint green ones and then when they were born, I loved to go out and get a pink or blue one

nanodyne · 12/10/2023 14:32

We lived in babygrows til about 6-7 months, then I switched to rompers and trousers/longsleeved body suits. He had started rolling so I wanted to give him use of his toes for wriggling about. Loved babygrows though, think my eldest would still wear them given the choice!

To me they are the same, but just more items to contend with.
But no stupid poppers to line up incorrectly and have to redo! The simplicity of something that avoided those bloody poppers won out every time for me. Mine lived in bodysuits and dungarees. Bodysuits having poppers so no bare midriff issues but only 2 or 3 in a nice straight line.

Don't dungarees still have poppers to contend with? Or am I being stupid? All mine do. I really don't find poppers at all annoying, but I'm clearly in the minority 😂

Some do, but only one on each shoulder. Most of the ones I had just had stretchy shoulders. Even the ones that do are only a couple and you can't get them wrong when it's one on each shoulder.

I was forever getting them lined up wrong and having to redo it all. Even with the ones that had one popper a different colour to get you started.

DC2 only spent 2 weeks in babygros as I found them so irritating.

What about the bottom though? Otherwise how do you nappy change?

I think it depends what number child it is lol! I bought loads of cute outfits for my first but my next two were in baby grows until a few months because I realised its not really comfortable or easy for newborns to wear minuture adult outfits. I mean I still had a couple of fancy dresses for special occasions for my daughters but it was baby grows for the majority of day to day stuff. When they started walking I dressed them in little outfits and no more baby grows.. so probably regular outfits introduced at 6 months and baby grows gone by 9 months.

I slipped the whole dungarees off. Still far easier than the babygro palaver!

Your post made me smile. My youngest child is now in his twenties so my views will seem terribly old fashioned. I actively dislike babygros as I think they make babies look like little frogs. I dressed all 3 children, boy and girls in Viyella baby gowns. They were old fashioned even then but much easier for nappy changing. They look adorable with booties and little cardigans in my view. I’m not keen on outfits for tiny babies either, but it should be what the mother thinks is best. We don’t need to worry about what’s fashionable for tiny babies

Sleepytiredyawn · 12/10/2023 18:13

I got mine dressed unless we had a lazy day. I didn’t want to waste their outfits by them hardly being worn and growing out of them. Each to their own, if it’s what you like then you do you, there’s nothing wrong with it.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 12/10/2023 18:37

DS is 10 months and still in babygros. So easy and they look far more comfortable for his fat little tummy than trousers, leggings, etc. Poppers are less faff than getting a T-shirt over his head. Sadly he’s twice the size of his sister so we’re coming to the end of hand-me-down babygros and soon he’ll be in her filthy nursery rags.

LILLYPRINT · 12/10/2023 18:49

I remember growing up ( i am a child of the 50's) the majority of new borns were dressed in long white nightdresses

ArielManto43 · 12/10/2023 18:55

When my sister was a baby back in the 1970s babygrows were a brand new thing and definitely day wear as well as night wear, and considered modern and very cute. My mother was always going on about how wonderful and practical they were, and how she wished they'd been around when my brother and I were babies. So when my own two were born, back in the 1990s, I still thought they were the best thing ever and mine practically lived in them. I think even then people were starting to think of them as a night time thing, but I didn't care. They just look so cosy and cute and comfortable in them. Funnily enough, my daughter recently became a mum herself and she too loves babygrows, but told me that people do comment and ask why her son still has his PJs on in the middle of the day. (It's pretty obvious that fancy little new-born outfits in cord or denim cost a lot more than babygrows do, so maybe there's a marketing aspect to all this too).

There is nothing cuter than babies in baby grows ❤️❤️

I don’t have a huge maternal instinct but whenever I see a baby in a baby grow I just just to cuddle them and never let them go!

I used to always put a short sleeve and leg baby grow on underneath clothes, as they were much softer on the skin.
And then I’d put a long sleeve and leg on at bedtime.

grannieali · 12/10/2023 19:01

How weirdly things change. My elder son was born in1964. He was clad in viyella dresses WHICH I HAD TO MAKE MYSELF with some clumsy lazy daisy embroidery. Knitwear was largely donated. Nappies were towelling, with muslin liners, and plastic pants which caused rashes. Mmy husband thought that I should go on soaking nappies, then washing them in a boiler until a younger friend told him about washing machines with a SEPARATE SPIN DRYER. Ten years later I had my second son. Babygrows from the start seemed amazing.

Fancyabikky · 12/10/2023 19:12

I do baby grows as pj’s or really cba days or if we’re just home for the day.
i guess im of the notion that of your bed clothes shouldn’t be worn as outfits….probably why my washer is on 4xs a day.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 12/10/2023 19:13

I did til she started moving more. If we were going out with people or to something I'd usually go for an outfit (often whichever outfit that person had gifted us!) because we'd been given them and I didn't want to waste it. But in the house or for walks in the pram, whatever was warm and comfortable for her and easy change for us.

Now she can walk its all about ease of movement in a different way! I think there's too much pressure for them to look perfect and "done up". Do what works for you. No one will remember the time you dressed them in the designer gear that one time. Don't stress it.

AmazingSnakeHead · 12/10/2023 19:19

I liked leggings and vests with tops over the top because I found it much easier to change nappies. I hated the poppers and was always getting them wrong. Leggings just come off, and back on, no fuss.

celticprincess · 12/10/2023 19:21

I had trouble with my baby adjusting to night and day so we always got I and dressed in a morning then bathed and into pyjamas on an evening. Also we were bought lots of day it outfits it would have been rude not to wear them and then also I used to see some that looked lovely when out an about. We also had reflux issues so often had something easy to pull off and redress into.

verabarbleen · 12/10/2023 19:33

I love baby grows but as a pp said for nappy changes I found footed legging and a vest with a cardigan or top over much more convenient for changes . And some outfits are really cute though . Each to their own!

helenatroy · 12/10/2023 19:35

My child only wore baby grows unless we were at a party or nice restaurant. Anything else seemed inconvenient. They were the cutest things.

RSSN · 12/10/2023 19:53

I think babygrows are by far the nicest on young babies. Probably up until about 9/10 months. And very practical too. I don't like it when people dress their babies like little old men/women. I know it's just my opinion and obv a lot of other people think differently.

RSSN · 12/10/2023 19:55

A lot of them now have 2 coloured poppers to match uo so it's very hard to go wrong. M&s ones do anyway

HLB01 · 12/10/2023 20:00

I'm a big babygro fan! My little one wears one most days but occasionally if we're going somewhere special or I'm in the mood I might dress her in an outfit. She's coming up to 9 months and they're still the most practical thing for me to dress her in... and it means she manages to keep something on her feet as her socks always come off when she wears outfits.

girlfriend44 · 12/10/2023 20:19

Yes Babygros are popular and practical for young babies.

I feel the same about shoes on babies too! DS didn't even own any shoes till 12 months old.

Babies shouldn’t actually wear shoes until they’re walking
