To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

I never dressed mine in baby grow and they are in their 20s now.

Topsyturvy78 · 11/10/2023 23:32

I only used them to sleep in. Honestly I had that many little outfits bought for them. I wanted to get some wear out of all their clothes mine were born late 90's and 2000 so hardly a new thing.

SpaceJamtart · 11/10/2023 23:34

I hated babygros. They look cute but I struggled with poppers, and trying to line the stupid things up in the dark when doing nappy changes at night was awful. I know there are zip ones but they are always more expensive. My babies were small and wriggly so they always pulled their feet up inside babygros so they were in a ball with loose 'tentacles' hanging at the bottom.

My kids were in t-shirts, vests and leggings pretty much the entire time. So much easier to pull up and down and you only have to change one bit if they only throw up on a bit of it.
Plus as I had girls, people tended to buy dresses for them which was sweet but impractical so all the leggings were helpful to layer under them. I liked that if they were a bit warm I could whip the t-shirt off and they were still 'dressed'.
Also they fit for way longer than all-in-ones where as soon as their feet hit the bottom they're done, leggings seem to fit fine for years past their age bracket and then shapeless baby dresses can become toddler tops.

It's a shame as 1) babygrows are super cute and 2) a lot of the "outfits" look very messy. My friends all dress their baby girls in skirts. WHY? Why is a 8 month old baby in a fucking skirt, it looks awful!

How does a skirt look awful? What on earth is wearing with a baby wearing a skirt?

Lilacanemone · 11/10/2023 23:43

I noticed the same 15 years ago. First time at a baby group when all the babies were 6 weeks old mine was the only one in a baby grow. The next week a few more were in them too. I found little outfits too fiddly for a tiny baby.

Lillygolightly · 11/10/2023 23:44

I am a big fan of babygrows!

I have 5 kids and they are just the comfiest thing for them to wear and they are easily dressed up with some cute socks and a cardigan. Mine wore babygrows a lot in the first year, outfits were for outings or special occasions.

My youngest 2 are twins and not quiet 2, they mainly wear comfy leggings/joggers and tops now but if we are spending the day chilling at home they can wear a babygrow and be comfy, I love my loungewear at home so I figure they should enjoy it too!

Notsuredontknow · 11/10/2023 23:45

I thought it would be mostly babygrows that my young baby would wear but like you, I soon picked up on what others were doing: babygrows for bedtime and outfits for outings! I tended to follow suit but mostly because we had been gifted so many lovely clothes and I couldn’t see how we were going to use them otherwise

saythatagaintome · 11/10/2023 23:47

babies look cute no matter what.

I briefly used babygrows with mine then discovered that separates were MUCH easier!

And not practical! Not at that age.

MrsHughesPinny · 11/10/2023 23:54

Mine was in babygros till 6 months unless we were going somewhere special. Outfits are a waste of money at that age and usually more of a faff. TBH, I think I’d wear them myself if I could, they looked so comfy!

ThatMrsM · 11/10/2023 23:56

I'd say most babies I notice when out and about are in babygros or simple outfits (like leggings/joggers and vests). Rarely see anything that looks uncomfortable.

TheSkyRaisin · 12/10/2023 07:42

Ha, of course they are @AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps. Unfortunately.

The point is that we are encouraged to overconsume constantly, not just buy the things we actually need.

octodrive · 12/10/2023 08:00

@TheSkyRaisin

Baby clothes are just a way to get people to part with their money, aren't they?

Well isn't anything for sale the same?

You could take that further and argue adults don't need clothes and a onesie would suffice, but in the real world items offered for sale are about choice.

Always been the case for decades... Possibly centuries...

For me baby grows were worn as pyjamas after a few months old. After that my babies wore leggings/joggers and t-shirts/sweatshirts. Not full on outfits just comfy play wear. My little one was walking before a year so also factored in that they can’t really wear shoes with a baby grow. Or maybe I’m just not ‘classy’ enough. (That comment has really got my goat)

Edited

I think the class comment was mostly relating to babies dressed in proper outfits. Like jeans and football strips etc. You can tell from all the comments how different everyone thinks on the topic.

It's actually made me a bit worried about taking my LO out in a babygro now incase people are judging me lazy!

I carried Dd in a sling 22 years ago and babygros are no good for that, their toes get squashed.
There's also plenty of soft, comfy outfits for babies too.

Loads of footless ones around!

BatshitFloralDress · 12/10/2023 09:39

It seems like the term 'outfit' means different things to different people.

Those in favour of 'outfits' seem to mean clothes made cotton/jersey type fabrics which are soft, loose fitting, breathable, comfy.

Whereas those who don't like them seem to be talking about babies wearing 501s, leather jackets or full ballerina tutus complete with pointe shoes.

Personally, I'm not sure how a pair of soft jersey dungarees with a vest or some soft leggings and a top is any different to a babygro except that they are in 2 pieces rather than 1? It's basically like a babygro but cut in half surely?

whizzbangpopsplutter · 12/10/2023 10:34

I had to look back at photos to remember when I moved mine out of babygros. Turns out it was around 9 months. A couple of dungarees/leggings and top outfits do make an appearance from 6 months. I remember it vaguely dawning on me that it seemed a bit unusual by that age, and I do remember someone confusing me by commenting on his "pyjamas".

The other thing that becomes clear is that I was really remarkably shit at choosing outfits. Poor DS looks completely ridiculous in most of them - wildly clashing patterns etc. In one example I seem to have accidentally dressed him as a mini pirate, and not in an amusing, deliberately fancy-dress sort of way. Sticking to babygros and knitted cardigans/bootees as long as possible was clearly in his best interests! Who would have thought it would be so hard to choose a co-ordinating top and trousers? But no, in my horribly sleep deprived state (he was a terrible terrible sleeper until well into his second year of life) it was clearly well beyond me.

Yeah you make a good point. I don't think a vest, cardy and a pair of leggings is much different to a babygro for example. To me they are the same, but just more items to contend with. Which is why I find it weird lots of babies aren't in a one piece more often.

Mine wore rompers throughout the hot summer days. I think I need to invest in some more leggings and soft jersey dungarees. I've been bought many dungarees and t shirts which are lovely, but t shirts just create a bare midriff and the dungarees I currently have are all quite a hard, thick material.

I have no qualms that babies can look super cute in certain "outfits". I'm obviously just drawn to simplicity!

But no stupid poppers to line up incorrectly and have to redo! The simplicity of something that avoided those bloody poppers won out every time for me. Mine lived in bodysuits and dungarees. Bodysuits having poppers so no bare midriff issues but only 2 or 3 in a nice straight line.

Devilsmommy · 12/10/2023 12:59

My little one detested babygros. He wasn't much better with rompers either🤣 so I just started putting him in sweats and he was a lot more comfortable

Exactly!
Plus, for me personally, I have a connective tissue disorder which means that poppers are agony to do up, impossible some days, so I can about cope with one or two on a vest if the rest of the outfit was easy and stretchy!

Mamai90 · 12/10/2023 13:11

I had DD in babygrows til she was 3 months, I did have some outfits for her but babygrows were easier and I had some gorgeous ones. A friend commented that she was always in her pyjamas!

I like babies in babygrows and number 2 will be in them until she's a couple of months aswell, I don't really care what other people think.

The thread about babies looking chavvy in leggings and babygrows made me laugh. If anything the total opposite is true ie a baby in chinos and a polo shirt.

Ghostgirl77 · 12/10/2023 13:12

Mine was in them until six months, I just thought it was the most comfortable thing for him. Plus he was a winter baby so they helped keep his feet warm and cosy when we went out.
