To not understand why the Palestinians did not put up solar panel farms

This may be naive in the extreme, but I was reading the reports this morning that Gaza will run out of power today, which is horrific. I dread to think what is going to happen now to those poor people.

This caused me to think: We happen to be in the process of making ourselves completely self-sufficient (off-grid) using solar panels (and some wind), and this is in Ireland, so not a sunny place like Palestine.

My question is, given the Gaza Strip was always dependent on power from Israel, which they regard (rightly) as a hostile country, why have they not in all the years sought to become self-sufficient (or at least more self-sufficient) with regard to power, to prevent the kind of blockade they are experiencing now?

Actually an allied question for those who know would be: travelling in eastern Europe recently, especially Bulgaria, there are huge solar farms everywhere. I have not been to the Middle East (well not since I was a baby), but do they use solar at all? It would seem to be an obvious choice given the climate.

*"The number of panels in the enclave has increased four-fold in four years and they are now dotted on most rooftops and balcony on homes, schools, hospitals, shops, banks and mosques"

Maybe most aren't there any more after today, probably not, but they were there, contrary to what I and many others thought.*

Thats not what you were asking initially though. You asked why they did not have solar panel FARMS. You didn’t ask whether there were any solar panels on individual buildings and if so if this was common. They are two very different things. People responded based on your initial question regarding solar panel FARMS which are completely different to what you have said now answers your question.

Because Hamas couldn't give a shit about the Palestinian people.

MN really is a beautiful parallel universe.

One of the poorest places on earth, constantly at war. Why didn’t they just put up solar panels. Hmmm, any ideas, anyone?

Come to think of it, energy self sufficient is so easy that it’s hard to understand why Germany, the 3rd largest economy haven’t managed it. They are suffering a recession right now because of this.

The mind boggles.

Are you writing all this with a straight face?

Yes, it's rubble now, I am sure. But it wasn't an unheard of idea, deserving of such supercilious put downs...

So you were really thinking about the need for solar panels in Gaza at the beginning of the month, but only just got around to posting about it? Your post was a response to stories yesterday and the day before about the power in Gaza running out due to the blockade. And in that context it was seen as goady. If you can't see why wondering why or if people had installed solar panels to provide them with electricity when their electricity is running out and bombs are dropping on them, then you haven't thought about the timing of the question very well.

Where did she say that?

But they did have farms at one point. The Dutch government "aided" one. Read some of the links, kindly provided by serious posters.
