After a long period of not working due to illness, I'm about to try part time again. Curious about what the time ranges are for people working, full or part time. What would be your ideal schedule if you could pick?

For myself as I get older I'm going from a complete night owl to preferring to get stuff done and out of the way as early as possible. Despite still not being great at mornings at all. But I get exhausted much earlier in the evenings now and once I'm tired my brain shuts up shop and can do nothing useful. I am only 38!

Another primary teacher here. School is only 5 minutes away but was working 7.45-5 every day and working through lunch. My children attend my school so more often than not they’re with me, so they get bored and I can’t work as effectively.
Ended up dropping days as I burnt out, but just before CoL hit so I’m now absolutely skint. Still in same hours just three days a week and longer on parents evenings etc. will probably have to up my days again to make ends meet.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 11/10/2023 07:27

Full time, 37.5 hours a week 9:15-5. Only a 15-20 minute commute and school is opposite my house so no school run. Job has tons of flexibility and I manage my own diary so work from home whenever I need to.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/10/2023 07:32

Officially 37 hours a week, in reality more like 40 - 45. I generally start at 9am and finish at 6pm - 7pm.

If I am going in to the office I leave at 8.15am to get in to the office just before 9am. My commute is 16 min train journey with a 10 minute walk either end.

HurdyGurdy19 · 11/10/2023 07:33

WFH. In the office one day a month. The office is now a 30 minute drive, as they closed the office I was based in earlier this year.

I work full time, 7am to 3pm (my choice), with 30 minutes for lunch.

Before Covid, same hours with a commute of 45 minute walk, or 25 minute cycle, or 10 minute drive.

Looking back, I used to live in Towcester and worked in Victoria, London. Left home 6.30am and drove to Milton Keynes Station. Caught the 7.04 to London, then battled onto the Victoria Line underground, then a 10 minute walk to the office. 2 hours door to door. I did this even when I was 8 months pregnant. I can't imagine a commute like that now, and can't decide if I was a hero or an idiot to do it for so long 😀

LetItGoHome · 11/10/2023 07:33

I work a 5 day, 25 hour week. 8:30 - 1:30. My commute is 1 hour each way door to door.

Winchester100 · 11/10/2023 07:34

Two days a week. Get up 7am, leave 8.40.

20 minute commute, start around 9.

finish 4.45

One day a week WFH

BorrowersAreVermin · 11/10/2023 07:44

Longest commute I've had was just over an hour each way with public transport. Luckily only had to do it three times a week, I wouldn't be home until nearly 7pm some days and DS would go to bed at 7:30 because he was only a toddler at the time.

Pre-covid I was 25 minutes walk from the house, but I had to change jobs so now it's a 40 minute drive if I avoid the busiest times, but only once a week. TBH there's a job closer to home I'd love to get, I'd need to be in the office more (3-2 split compared to current 1-4), but it would take about 10 minutes to get to the office.

I know a lot of people have longer commutes but I would never go back to an hour plus again. Work to live and all that.

reluctantbrit · 11/10/2023 07:45

I leave the house at 7.20, train goes at 7.41 and I am at my desk at 8.45.

It's a 9-5 job and I am home at 6.20/6.30 depending on trains.

I work 4 days, 2-3 of them in-office. I always get a seat on the train so it's not too bad unless there are issue.
But I definitely don't miss the commute when the trains are on strike.

SoundTheSirens · 11/10/2023 07:47

WFH so no commute, 8.00 - 5.00, FT worked as a nine day fortnight.

Taylorswiftserastour · 11/10/2023 07:48

3 days a week, officially 9-5 but only do that on the day I WFH. Office days I go in for 8.30 ish so I finish at 4.30. I often have a shorter lunch and finish earlier too, so I can nip to the supermarket before picking DS up. Commute is 45 minutes including the nursery drop off & collection.

My commute to my first graduate job was a 20 minute walk followed by a 40 minute train and a 15 minute bus ride, on a bad day it could take over 2 hours with cancellations and delays. Exhausting. It wasn't even that good a job!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/10/2023 07:48

5 mins commute 12-3

inisfree · 11/10/2023 07:52

Work full time, 7.5 hours per day. Leave house at 7.10, at work by 8.30, leave work at 5.00, home by 6.15/ 6.30 and will most likely continue until I retire in 15 years.

Feel depressed reading that back :(

mumtum2023 · 11/10/2023 07:52

I work from home so I don't have a commute time. Every Christmas as I shut my laptop though I do put on driving home for Christmas and walk from my laptop to the sofa just for the laugh. It's a bad dad joke 🤣
I work 22 hours across three days and it's set times. I start at 8 in the morning but finish time varies.

Thanksforreading · 11/10/2023 07:57

Hi! Also 38, with two DC. Use to work 45-50 hours a week, 40 contracted and the rest was overtime. Last two years stopped working because of kids, went back two months ago, and only work one day a week, looking to move into two. And I get you I’m shattered, my days working is 8hours 10-6pm commute is 40mins door to door. But it’s not just the job, it’s the kids, the household, the cooking, cleaning and doing extra with the kids! Since going back to work I do feel like my brain is not as good as it use to be, and I’m just tired everyday… 🫣

margotrose · 11/10/2023 07:59

I'm a dog walker.

Leave home around 8.30am, back home by 2pm at the latest. No real commute as such - my longest drive to collect a dog is four minutes.

margotrose · 11/10/2023 07:59

I meant to say I work around 30 hours a week.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 11/10/2023 08:01

21 hours a week. I do 9 to 2.30 4 days and leave about 8.30.

pinksheetss · 11/10/2023 08:01

Hybrid working, on my commute to office days I leave house at 6.45 for an 8am start in office (usually get there 10 mins early) and finish at 4pm

Two days wfh so still do 8-4 but get an hours lunch

Novemberish · 11/10/2023 08:06

Full time, 35 hours per week.
Commute is notionally around 40 mins but often takes over an hour due to traffic issues. I get the bus at 7.30 to ensure I'm there on time, or 7am to be absolutely sure. Often I have meetings kicking off from 9am so it's good to get settled and prepared in advance.

Bus home is a similar time duration but there is one bus at 5.02 which I'm never going to be able to get due to meetings until 5pm, so I get the 6.10 bus.
I also regularly work through lunch breaks to get on top of work so this means I do at least 3 hours per day/15 hours per week extra. Also answer emails and read reports on the commute but trying to minimise any further evening work when I get home. I'm often out of the house from 7-7.
I do one day from home and it is glorious.

Shadyboots23 · 11/10/2023 08:09

WFH 40hrs, 8am - 4.30pm

LBOCS2 · 11/10/2023 08:10

I do 37.5 hours over 5 days; 9-5.30, WFH.

I only came back full time this April though - for the past 6 years I've been working varying versions of part time (3 days, term time only/4 days all year) depending on what my family needed. It's been a bit of an adjustment, not having that extra day to do life and family admin but I'm actually finding it less stressful as there's nothing happening at work without me overseeing it!

Groovee · 11/10/2023 08:12

I have fibromyalgia. I used to work 16 hours over 5 days but I have reduced to 15.5hrs and work 2 full days instead. It then means Wednesday is a rest day. But I have a better work life balance just now.

berksandbeyond · 11/10/2023 08:14

I work 27.5 hours a week, from home permanently so no commute! I do it as 9-2.30 usually but I’m flexi so can work other times if I wish, eg in school holidays if my child is in holiday club I’ll work to suit their hours better, for example clubs that start at 10.

SylvesterandTweetyPie · 11/10/2023 08:14

I work a 15 minute walk from home. Start at 10, finish at 3. I also study 2 courses around these hours.
Before that, I was working 60 hours a week full time with an hour's commute each way. Worse when it snowed heavily while I was on a 12 hour day, and it took just under 4 hours to get back home. After that, I changed jobs to work closer. It's so much better.

Sheisready · 11/10/2023 08:16

8:30 til 4:30 (4:00 on a Friday). Commute is either 40 minute walk or 15 minute drive.
