After a long period of not working due to illness, I'm about to try part time again. Curious about what the time ranges are for people working, full or part time. What would be your ideal schedule if you could pick?

For myself as I get older I'm going from a complete night owl to preferring to get stuff done and out of the way as early as possible. Despite still not being great at mornings at all. But I get exhausted much earlier in the evenings now and once I'm tired my brain shuts up shop and can do nothing useful. I am only 38!

I have a 45 minute commute but have to drop my son at his special school first which is another 20 mins on top. Leave home about 8 and get home around 630, work one day from home. I’m now 50 and it’s doing me in as Ds is also autistic and can be quite hard work so I think I’m going to have to look at cutting down days again in next few years.

AlexandraJJ · 11/10/2023 05:58

I work full time 5 days a week. 4 days WFH 1 day in the office. For the 1 day I get up at 4.40am and leave at 6.30am. Commute is an hour (M1) minimum each way, always work beyond my contracted hours but take some of it back in TOIL. Better than last job which again was a day a week in the office with a 4hr each way commute.

Bearcub101 · 11/10/2023 05:59

I’m 42. I cover a large geographical area. Last week I left home 7am Monday, drove 3 hours, worked, stayed in a hotel, drove 40 minutes Tuesday, worked, drove 1 hour 10 and stayed in a hotel, worked Wednesday, drove 30 minutes Thursday, worked, stayed in a hotel, worked Friday then 3 hour drive home.

This week I’m WFH all week. 9-5

Love my job!

I work 37.5 hours a week (technically 🤣)

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 11/10/2023 06:04

I start about 8am, can be flexible on this, so leave the house about 7:10am.

I work full time as a teacher. Leave the house about 6.45, half hour commute so in at 7.15. Leave for home about 5.30, pick up DD at 6 and home by 6.15. Normally 5-6 hours work at the weekend.

Just sending love as this sounds tough xxxx

givemeasunnyday · 11/10/2023 06:11

I used to work either 8 - 5, or 8.30 - 5.30, with an hour for lunch.

My most recent job was 8.30 - 1

I've always lived not more than a 15 minute walk from work, other than in my teens when I lived a half hour drive away.

I am now retired at 64 - and loving it 😀

Hardbackwriter · 11/10/2023 06:12

32 hours over four days: 8.30-5.30 Mon to Thurs. Commute is only about 10/15 mins, though I do both nursery and school (breakfast club) drop off so it takes me longer than that!

I work a lot more hours than that in practice, partially because I absolutely do do a full-time job on part-time wages. I knew that I would and for me it's worth it for my Friday with my toddler, but I'm not sure I'd actively recommend it to others.

Twentymorequestions · 11/10/2023 06:13

I work 36 hours per week, which is classed as part time by the business but full time by Office for National Statistics. I leave home at 6.45, work until 16.30 and arrive home at 17.00 three days a week. The remains hours (5/6 as I work through my lunch break) I do from home at any time and on any of the other 4 days to suit me.

Iusedtoworkthere · 11/10/2023 06:14

I work 9-5 or 8-4 5 days a week, 2 days WFH.

The 8-4 days are my WFH days. We're in a busy period at work so at the moment I'm working 8-6 on those days (my choice, they're not insisting on it).

My office days so tend to stick to 9-5 because at the moment I'm tied to specific trains.
My commute is 90-100 minutes each way. I read a lot.

I am very tired most of the time (I'm in my mid-50s, health not brilliant).
I'm hoping to go down to 4 days next year at some point - haven't asked them yet.

Aprilx · 11/10/2023 06:14

For most of my career and definitely when I was 38, I would usually be leaving the house between 6:30-7:00am and would get home at about 7:30pm. The commute would be taking up 60-90 minutes each way on public transport.

Now I am in my 50s and am winding down. I have a local job that is about a 15-20 minute drive and I work 25 hours per week which I try to stick to.

OggyBunsen · 11/10/2023 06:14

Full time primary teacher - leave home at 6:30, three days a week leave school at 5:15ish, 2 days a weeks leave as soon after 3:15 as I can get away with.

Commute there: 35mins (which gets longer the later I leave)
Commute home: 1h15mins

peanutbutter00 · 11/10/2023 06:14

My core hours I have to be at work at 9-3.30 then any additional work can be done any time. I choose to start at 7.30 due to traffic. My commute is 45 in on a morning but due to traffic usually 1 hour to 1 hour 10 on the way home. I set off at 6.45. I much prefer to be up and in work earlier when it's quiet and leave earlier

HippoStraw · 11/10/2023 06:19

Leave home 6.30, so start work at 7. Work through until 5, including through lunch. Home by 5.40.

SushiSuave · 11/10/2023 06:20

I leave the house at 7 to be at work for 7.30 and leave work anywhere between 4.30 and 5.30. So 9-10 hours per day. I also work around 3 hours on a Sunday.

terraced · 11/10/2023 06:21

Self employed, manual job so it does vary. 5-7 days. Commute varies from 4 minutes to an hour depending on where I'm working. Start around 8 and try to finish by 4. I'm 44.

luter · 11/10/2023 06:22

I'm a teacher and I get in work at 7.30am and leave at 5.50pm. Fortunately my commute is only 5 minutes. A couple of times a month I won't leave until 9 because of parents evenings/ governors meeting/ curriculum talks.
I'm 50 and I am finding my days too long, I'm not sure how much longer I can sustain it. Ideally I'd like to work 8-4.

soupweather · 11/10/2023 06:24

9-5 with a 10 minute drive into the office.

Tangled123 · 11/10/2023 06:29

I work 40 hours, 8-5 Monday-Thursday and 8-2 on Friday. Commute takes about 17 minutes but I drop my daughter to nursery in the morning, which adds on an extra 10 minutes ish. I aim to leave the house for 7:30 but that very rarely happens, I’m usually always late.

Sexnotgender · 11/10/2023 06:30

10 minute commute, work 8.15-4.30. Work in finance sector.

Sparklehead · 11/10/2023 06:31

I work 32.5 hours over 4 days, plus work one weekend day in eight. Start at 8.30 each day, and then finish at 4.30 or 5pm. If I cycle into work, my commute is 15 minutes, if I walk in, it’s 50 minutes.

MissSmiley · 11/10/2023 06:33

I've just started a new job after having 18 months off recovering from a major surgery (cancer but no chemo) I gave my original job up and took this one because it offered me the chance to work part time to begin with. I really struggle with tiredness too. I'm doing 8.30-12.30 five mornings a week. Like you I have more energy in the mornings. I've been back about six weeks, sometimes I come home at 12.30 and sleep for two hours, sometimes I'm ok. It's a 3 min walk from home. I've had to do a few full days training and it's exhausted me. This arrangement can go on as long as I like but I think they would ideally like me full time within 6 months. I was very fortunate that I got to choose the hours I work. I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to do full time yet. But I'm loving the job, and actually I think sometimes working gives me more energy.

Good luck

piesforever · 11/10/2023 06:36

Commute is approx 1.5 hours each way. Leave the house at 615, back around the same time.

Aquestioningmind · 11/10/2023 06:39

Up at 05:30, get on the train at 06:30, in the office (five mins from a main London station) by 08:15.

Leave work anywhere between 16:30-18:30 and home about two hours after that.

Long days but ultimately that’s the price of doing my job and earning a good wage. I try to WFH two-three times a week? But it’s not unusual for me to have to go in five days.

Mum did the same commute as me for thirty years.

neverbeenskiing · 11/10/2023 06:42

I'm the same age as you and work 30 hours a week over 4 days, 8am-4pm, term time only. My commute is 7 minutes door to door.

I've had lots of different working patterns over the years..3 days a week, FT, shift work, compressed hours. There's pros and cons to all of them. I like my current situation because I'm home in time for dinner with the DC every day, I get a day off to myself in the week to get stuff done, and because I'm on a term time only contract I never go longer than 7/8 weeks without at least a week off.

Alsonification · 11/10/2023 06:48

I'm a childminder so I work from home. I do 8 to 6pm Monday to Friday so 50 hours a week.
Obviously I've no commute but my routine is, alarm goes off at 6am, jump in shower & downstairs by 6:25am. Have a lovely quiet breakfast & then cuppa on the sofa til first baby comes in at 8am. I cannot function without my morning quiet time. I do a school run with preschool aged children but it's a less than 5 mins walk from my house so we do that twice a day. In nice weather we're in the garden or local park or out walking otherwise we're home. Last Baby goes just before 6pm. I go for my own walk for an hour then home to dinner & tv.
A couple of mornings a week I drop my eldest to the bus for her job. She commutes on the bus going in & the train home so it's 1hr 40 mins in the morning & 45 mins in the evening. She often works from home though. My son goes to college locally so he walks. Takes him 25 mins.

I would love to be able to do less hours work. Even 4 days a week but because of the job I'd never find people that work the same 4 days so I'd always have someone on each day if you know what I mean.
