To not understand what is going on between Israel & Palestine?

I know I sound really naive here and I should know what is going on in the news but I don't really know much and I'd like to educate myself.

Can anyone explain in simple terms what is happening between the two? I have seen a few famous people saying they stand with Israel on social media and getting flamed for it. Also Rishi Sunak tweeting the same today.

Do most support Palestine then? Is the "right" thing to do or is there just two sides to every story here? I'd like to understand what is happening but don't know where to start

I’ve just driven home and heard the latest on the radio and wasn’t really sure what was going on.

Thank you for posting the thread and to all those people who have tried to explain it in simple terms,

Cocacolathanks · 09/10/2023 22:37

Which is what the Israeli government has been doing to innocent Palestinian civilians for decades now?

Cocacolathanks · 09/10/2023 22:37

Apologies my comment was directed at the OP who said ‘fighting back’ equates to killing innocent Israeli citizens.

I found this snippet in the Daily Mail interesting. Seems like Trump did attempt to do some good during his time in office:

“A key goal is to undo the thawing of relations between the Jewish state and other Middle Eastern nations — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan — that occurred between September 2020 and January 2021 with the signing of the Abraham Accords during the Presidency of Donald Trump (who, in contrast to his fiery, war-mongering image, was actually an advocate of peace and co-operation in the Middle East).”

MisschiefMaker · 09/10/2023 22:42

We have not occupied Gaza since 2005 we left.

@Izzy54321*

Then how is Israel able to turn off access to its electricity? 2005 was just the illegal settlers leaving. It still maintains a land, sea and air blockade.

Please see this link from the UN on Israel & Gaza "Gaza continues to be occupied..."

I'm clueless what's going on but from watching what they did to those women, I'm well snd truly flying the flag for Israel 🇮🇱 GO ISRAEL!

This isn't a football match. Many many Israelis and Palestinians have died and are going to die. Whatever "side" you're on, and whatever opinion you have on actions taken, whooping about it is so inappropriate and in such bad taste. This is not a positive moment. Israel can be supported in their defence while also recognising that this is not a situation anyone rational wants to be in.

it's not about fighting back. It's not about Hamas wanting a share of land and equality. They want to destroy Israel and wipe out the Jewish race. Authoritarian dictatorship and ethnic cleansing. Succeeding where the Nazis failed. Sound familiar?

Yup. genocide does sound familiar - it's what Israel is doing to the people of Gaza right now.

Would it kill you to condemn what Israel is doing to the innocent people in Gaza right now.

It's possible to sympathise with the people of Israel, and condemn their government for its past actions and sympathise with the innocents of Palestine and condemn Hamas. At the moment there are Jewish people around the globe fearing for their safety, and that's not hyperbole. Look at the people publicly celebrating in London, flying the Palestinian flag. What are they celebrating? Bully boy men kidnapping, raping and murdering civilians before desecrating their bodies. That's not what Islam teaches. They should be ashamed of themselves.

yazoolove · 10/10/2023 02:40

@Haffiana from what I remember they have peace deals with Israel. There's high security and occasionally the Red Crescent would deliver aid during Israeli attacks. There's a reason why it's called a siege and some say it's an open air prison because you simply cannot escape. It's the most densely populated area in the world where everything is controlled from your water supply to your electricity and food supply. I've just watched a video of a father rubbing a lifeless babies back. It's absolutely horrible and it's only going to get worse. There's no winners.

There is no simple reply to your question.

Read this about the period 1917 to 1948.

@Izzy54321 I’m not Jewish but I’m so sickened, upset and angry that so many seem to be supporting Hamas. Hamas are terrorists whose avowed aim is to kill all Jews. It is the same as supporting jihadists.

Why are people on the side of murderous thugs who don’t believe in equal rights for women, gay people or Jews. How can any county negotiate with a group whose stated aim is to obliterate them.

The United Kingdom Reddit sub has this message: Support for the genocidal apartheid state of Israel falls under Rule 1 and 2 and will be permanently banned, thanks. Please educate yourself:

I was completely sick at the comments. Support for terrorists. Outright classic antisemitism. Comments like 'we all know who controls the media.' How much hate do Jewish people have to go through.

Apparently it took the Israeli military and police around six hours to arrive. Why so long? I assumed they would have a permanent security presence on the borders, but it seems not?

The border is over 25 miles long, it’s not possible to have guards stationed along its entire length. There are a handful of dedicated crossing points which were targeted (and the border guards killed) but they also simply drove bulldozers through the fences in places.

Genuinely can't work out if you're satirising people who form an opinion on hundreds of years of incredibly complex history (that experts in the field would struggle to form a consensus on) based on on solitary event in that history, an Instagram post or a daily Mail article. Or if you've actually just done that.

Radyward · 10/10/2023 07:41

I despise hammas for the atrocity last weekend. The poor civilians at the festival. Why take children- elderly and women hostage. In the same breadth I also condemn israel for their bullyboy tactics and treatment of the ordinary palestinians for decades.
Netanyahu coming out to siege the gaza strip. Planning to turn off supplies to 2 million people is a war crime and he should be called out and the worlds media should be calling that action for what it is. But oh no Biden is rock solid behind Netanyahu. He loves a good old war. Trouble is Egypt wont let access through their land border. Trump haters cant say He was war hungry.
Corbyn stands with palestine which to any take a break readers is code for supporting Hammas- bad move by Labour here .
The full letter of the law has to be served on Hammas and those poor people released BUT that womt happen as its now WAR . Netanyahu is under serious pressure from ordinary israelis to do something and his reign will be remembered for his response to this.
Its all v v odd though
Mossad and the IDF were taken by surprise - really- are we expected to believe

The american public are war weary and angry over financial suppport for Ukraine. Whats Biden going to do now ??

All it well end with is terrible human suffering. Israel are no angels to palestine and vice versa Hammas thats why there is division of opinions worldwide .
Did ye see Shira Haas turned off comments on insta as She was saying stand with Israel. Donate on a link.

Read their second comment. They're an ignorant imbecile and are happy to remain that way. Don't waste your time.

Baffled1989 · 10/10/2023 08:22

@Cocacolathanks but it doesn’t make it okay!

it is NEVER okay to kill babies, children, the innocent. You saying “but it’s what Israel has been doing to Palestinians” you are justifying it and that makes you every bit as bad as them if you think babies need to be beheaded!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/10/2023 08:28

Mossad and the IDF were taken by surprise - really- are we expected to believe

They appear to genuinely have been. Hamas are saying only a few top commanders knew about the raids. They would not have missed the opportunity to taunt Israeli intelligence if this hadn’t been the case.

I’m actually a bit surprised they didn’t pretend that the whole of Gaza knew about it, just to play games with Israel.

RandomButtons · 09/10/2023 19:36

Ultimately the issue is both sides want the land that is the Gaza Strip, and the land that is Israel. There really isn’t any simple solution. The conflict history goes back thousands of years.

Ermm. You are aware that Israel voluntarily, unilaterally pulled out of Gaza and forcibly relocated all of its citizens who'd been living in the area? Want the land my arse.
