To ask where the hell the Israel/Palestine thread went?

Pollyputhekettleon · 09/10/2023 09:16

Just that really. Is it shut down or did it get moved somewhere? And why am I having to post here to find out such basic information? Why doesn't Mumsnet leave some kind of announcement where a thread used to be explaining why it's been disappeared?

‘Quickly descend into hatted’

Do they? It’s annoying that any criticism of the Israeli state and their treatment of Palestinians is quickly labelled ‘anti-Semitic’.

It is possible to both abhor Hamas’ attack and understand the reasons behind it. Just as it is to feel for the Palestinian people, who are undoubtedly going to really suffer the aftermath of this attack and to feel for the Israeli families who are wondering if they’re loved ones are dead or kidnapped.

When people are massacred,I don't think it's the right time to be seeing any other side! There is no other side to justify it.

AhNowTed · 09/10/2023 10:49

It's not about justifying it. No one says that.

It's about trying to understand and learning from the past. Unless we do so, nothing will change.

Givemepeas · 09/10/2023 10:50

‘When people are massacred,I don't think it's the right time to be seeing any other side! ‘

People are being killed on both sides. Israel is calling air strikes in a highly populated area full of civilians in retaliation.

There are always two sides. And denying this will only lead to more deaths. Both sides are culpable. The only real question is how many more innocent people will die caught up in the crossfire.

The problem is these threads quickly descend into hatred.

Yes, it's incredibly frustrating when that happens.

Not, the time to be doing that though. I'm not sure what that has to be pointed out.

Givemepeas · 09/10/2023 10:53

You can understand why something has happened without justifying it, excusing it or agreeing with it in any way.

And I mean that for both sides.

Unrelatedly....somebody replied to my comment on "to think nobody could support hamas/palastine after this" (or something similar) & I missed it so if anybody saw what it said before it got taken down. Would be much appreciated. Haha

LemonyTicket · 09/10/2023 11:01

Its a real shame that last one went off the hill, but it had been really informative and polite for the entire day. Then late in the evening (perhaps around midnight) two or three accounts appeared simultaneously that were really quite offensive and went going all night.

I had quite bad insomnia and stayed up and it was essentially them just being generally odd and unhelpful. Like for example posting under everything you wrote with "more lies!" or "listen tool".

They were also saying very weird things. For example that Palestinians had generational trauma and Jews didn't. Stuff like that, being generally inflammatory.

It seemed like a coordinated attack. Perhaps by a paid person of some sort. I got the impression it was the same person. I thought they came across across as under the influence of a substance personally.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/10/2023 11:04

I know I wasn't the only one learning the history of that region by reading the discussion, and from one poster particularly

I expect we're thinking of the same one - Lemony something? - who was absolutely brilliant, giving so much to help with the background

Shame it went, and I don't think HQ usually delete hot news thngs; I can only think the extreme antisemitism may have kicked off on that one too?

Truthisbetterthanlies · 09/10/2023 11:04

EasternStandard · 09/10/2023 10:52

I didn’t find that overall. There were some good posts

I think the reason it might have been pulled is that having settled down into a pretty good thread, yesterday, once the obvious troll poster had been banned, there was a sudden spate of new posters posting stuff that was both controversial/rude but also didn't actually make grammatical sense half the time and it looked as though it had been written by (the free crap version) of ChatGPT. So the good content on the thread was threatening to be overwhelmed.

This happened latish last night, for people who last saw a functioning thread!

So I imagine MN HQ are checking up on some of these somewhat dodgy posters - possibly the original troll back under multiple new sock accounts?

And yes, I would imagine this thread will be pulled, as it's a TAAT.

Haffiana · 09/10/2023 11:05

Yes, there was a poster late last night who was clearly trying to get the thread pulled by being provocative and also offensive. My impression was that they were drunk/stoned as making little sense.

DownNative · 09/10/2023 11:05

@LemonyTicket aye, but a minority always spoils it for the majority. IMO, that's the intent.

Ah, I went to bed. Sorry you had to put up with that, @Lemony, and thanks for holding the fort.

And for all your patient and knowledgeable posts!

I have to admit to not being able to tolerate racist fuckwits as well as you can. Flowers

BeckyAMumsnet · 09/10/2023 11:06

Hello @Pollyputhekettleon some threads may be automatically hidden by our filters. (We don't go into detail about what triggers this.) In these cases we review the threads and decide whether to reinstate them.

We'll remove a thread if a large number of posts break our guidelines. This includes hate speech and personal attacks. We understand that MNers want to discuss what is happening, but differences of opinion must be tolerated.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/10/2023 11:08

Yes, I thought that might have beeen the case, and it was you I was thanking @LemonyTicket ... apologies for forgetting the second bit of your username!!

A pity really that this one will probably go too; it's not for me to suggest how HQ should run their site, but I often wonder why they don't just remove inappropriate posters rather than whole threads

LemonyTicket · 09/10/2023 11:09

Thanks @Puzzledandpissedoff I thought the conversation was good because we were sharing history and learning from everyone about something important and rarely discussed.

OneTC · 09/10/2023 11:09

If a thread is too much work, Mumsnet will pull it, and that's fair enough, it's their site.

LemonyTicket · 09/10/2023 11:12

@Truthisbetterthanlies

It came off to me as sock accounts. Not just because of the timing but the general language grammar attitude and because they were simultaneously accusing me of thinking Hamas were "shit on my shoe". Which is quite a specific expression

LemonyTicket · 09/10/2023 11:13

@Haffiana

Yes, there was a poster late last night who was clearly trying to get the thread pulled by being provocative and also offensive. My impression was that they were drunk/stoned as making little sense

I thought the same

LemonyTicket · 09/10/2023 11:16

@Truthisbetterthanlies

They weren't really being racist, although I got the vibe they didn't love the Jews much :)

It was more just baiting and talking nonsense. Like accusing me of not being a theology student, not being from the Middle east, in like a coordinated attack.

Just needless nonsense really!

Truthisbetterthanlies · 09/10/2023 11:17

For people who want to read about Israel/Palestinians, there is a live thread on this topic (albeit not clear from the name), with lots of excellent posts from @LemonyTicket and others, here:

When does terrorism become war? | Mumsnet

Yes, there is a spot of trolling on it, and not entirely sure it was started in good faith, but worth reading for the informative posts.

Yes, lots of it was very teenage-style trolling. Like an eye roll in written form! Made no sense most of the time!

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 09/10/2023 11:19

Yes, really good informative posts from @LemonyTicket and another poster, username maybe started with an M? They gave such a good overview of the background that I actually screenshotted what they had written in one particular post to read back later as I knew there was a chance that MN would delete.
