To be baffled at dislike for Victoria Beckham

whenever there is something online about this woman… the haters come out in force. today someone calling her “a Katie price that can keep a husband”

what is the problem? She seems like a fairly inoffensive woman who has made a success out of her life (and that was her own success: she had it before she met David)

I know people who’ve worked with her who say she is an absolutely lovely woman, and hilarious to boot. Her children are very well-behaved and polite as well.

She’s really done nothing to justify the hate she gets.

Oioicaptain · 06/10/2023 17:17

@Siameasy

However, I think the dislike may be because anyone can see she is massively punching. If you look at the traditional set up where the man brings status and the woman brings beauty. She’s averagely good looking whereas you would expect a top footballer to be with a model.

Bloody hell Siam!! Is that what women should be? Trophies?? Besides, she is a very attractive woman. I don't think that you can say that she's punching at all.

I’m just speaking of reality. It may sound distasteful but men select a mate for beauty and women select for status. It’s just how it is.
I wouldn’t class her as “very attractive”. I mean, back when they got together most of us were slim like her and she was averagely pretty but certainly not anywhere near approaching model material. He on the other hand is a very high status man. Bear in mind when his star was on the ascent he would’ve had model-quality women throwing themselves at him. She did really well to get him so good on her. If he did cheat she was right to stay as she would never have managed to do better had she left.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 19:59

People say she is really nice and has a witty dark sense of humour. She changed after David cheated as used to always smile before then and I can imagine something changed inside her then and the way the press made her feel like it was her fault and all the grief she got from the Spanish press also. It probably changed her also so she did not smile for the press and less trusting. David seems like he has no filter at all as he was slagging Victoria about how her accent changed and she used to sound common and now sounded posh. David was an amazing footballer I have to give him that but not really a fan to be honest of him as he glossed over his affair in the new documentary and it was all about how he was so tired and hard to get up in the morning and nothing about his poor wife who had been cheated on and publicly humiliated. He just wants to be knighted and called a Sir. But do not think that will happen as emails were leaked a few years ago about a charity and he was saying I am not giving my money and not a good impression of him to be honest.
I have to say though their children have been brought up very well and never hear anything bad about them or they going wild drink/drugs so they do seem like very good parents.
I was just shocked at how very thin Victoria was and even though they have loads of money and lovely houses they have the same issues as everyone else as David has really bad ocd. But I do think women get a harder time in the press.
I just find it weird though that they brought their children up in the limelight as not something I would have done when the press hounded them so much so clearly they must enjoy the attention if keep doing documentaries etc and always posting about their lives.

Some folks, myself included, find it hard to warm to the constantly curated, filtered and PR version of a person.

It's not hate, or jealousy.

It's recognising you're being fed an edited version, and there's not much to like about that.

I admire her discipline, and she's no fool, but that's about it. All else is filtered.

bigshort · 06/10/2023 20:07

notlucreziaborgia · 06/10/2023 19:44

I have no idea what she’s like as a person, and I give zero fucks about whether she presents as ‘warm and likeable’ or not. She’s clearly an astute businesswoman that works hard at what she does, and I respect her.

Why do people keep saying she is an astute business woman when her business has been making a loss for its entire 15 year history?

I mean, does being a celeb, make words mean something else? Does astute businesswoman mean 50 million in losses just because she was a spice girl?

Seriously, please explain, cos I don't get it.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 20:07

Shocking that someone would say 'her eldest son is a wanker'. He seems like a lovely well mannered young man. Any wonder he has anxiety the way the press also hounded him as a child and he was crying and distressed. He is a young man and will find his way in life. Not like he is falling out of clubs coked out of his head or drunk, brought up very well and seems like a nice lad.

Tatslookawful · 06/10/2023 20:10

Why have they done the doc now (?) & how much could they potentially get for it?

She’s not the best singer or dancer, yet she’s taken what she has and made herself, and her husband, into a worldwide brand. That isn’t an easy accomplishment at all, and regardless of whether you personally consider that to be laudable or not, it takes skill.

He is a wanker. Pretending to be a chef and sending out stupid videos trying and failing to cook a steak, or using dolmio to make his pasta (while prancing about with a dog in a baby carrier, and appearing on US morning shows as celeb chef, putting together pre cooked shit in a sandwich! Nepo baby nonsense.

Not to mention his epically bad taste 4 to 15 million dollar wedding (amounts vary by source).

Any wonder he has anxiety when his parents have pushed him and his siblings into the limelight their whole lives, and sold their chlldhoods and privacy for brand Beckham.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 20:16

Probably done it so David wants his knighthood.

They would have been paid so much for it. We enjoyed the football side of his career in doc but he skipped over the affair bit and did not seem to take ownership of it and was all about how hard it was for him and not about Victoria at all. Never found him remotely attractive looks wise but he had a very fit body and he made so much money as a model in Asia as they bloodywell loved him.

If you want to watch a real doc the Ricky Hatton one is amazing as he is just so honest and shows everything and talks about all the bad stuff he did and did not gloss over it. He also changed his life around and made me like him more for being so honest. With David we did not see that and I felt sorry for Victoria as how could you ever truly be happy after being cheated on so publicly. She changed after that but everyone says she is lovely and very witty.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 20:20

AhNowTed TOTALLY agree it was very distressing to see Brooklyn as a child in the car so distressed and that is what I was shocked at. I really admire parents who keep their children out of the limelight.

Fulshaw · 06/10/2023 20:21

He just wants to be knighted and called a Sir

People often bring this up in a negative way. But what’s actually wrong with wanting a knighthood?

applecatchers36 · 06/10/2023 20:21

Haven't watched the documentary but am aware it is part of their PR machine.
She seems brighter and more astute than him. Feel sorry for her with Rebecca Loos and all the other alleged infidelities. No wonder she had a sour face she had to deal with all that ( & still the comments that she is punching)...
Think she is maybe bankrolled by him for her fashion business/ passion project as acknowledgement of this.
Think part of the turn off is the media portrayal as being something that perhaps they are not...

Its the sort of thing that if you're looking for it, you don't deserve it. Not quite U, to actively pursue it.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 20:23

Nothing wrong with wanting or having a Knighthood but he is so desperate for it and then those emails came out about a charity and he was horrible in those emails saying stuff about the charity and it really showed he is not who he says he is. It is all about him and brand Beckham.

DysonSpheres · 06/10/2023 20:25

The children of mega celebs are rarely well adjusted. They feel humongous pressure to continue in the lifestyle their parents provided for them. Inherited riches and exposure to paparazzi and a feeling of being important for no particular reason, make it difficult not to want to 'perform' when growing up. Do any celebrity kids do bog standard careers?

I think their eldest son is quite sweet compared to some celebrity off-spring. Yes the obvious nepotism is annoying, but such is the unfairness of the world.

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 06/10/2023 20:26

Fizbosshoes · 06/10/2023 18:47

I think they were both beneficial to each others longevity hence Brand Beckham

None of the other Spice girls have had the long term interest despite having more solo singing success. And his team mates from the same era are mainly not famous for anything other than football (commentary, presenting and managing football teams) or womanising!

She's far wealthier and more famous than the other Spice Girls but I wonder if any of them are envious or would swap lives with her. I always think Emma Bunton and Mel C have it the best, millions in the bank but no longer A list tabloid stars, so can live a normal life without too much paparazzi nonsense.

BlueSky2023 · 06/10/2023 20:26

I have no issue with her, saw her on Parkinson once with David years ago and they were both lovely.
Think it’s probably jealousy

SerafinasGoose · 06/10/2023 20:36

She seems inoffensive, hard working and conscientious. She hardly comes across as the most intelligent person in the world but she's entertaining, funny and clearly has a great deal of business savvy. She's turned her hand very successfully to several separate ventures and has made the very best of the cards and opportunities she's been given.

It's creating a 'brand' out of her family that doesn't seem to have been well received: far too 'reality tv' style which rarely goes down well with the public (who at the same time voraciously eat it up). Also, dare I say it, in British terms the Beckhams are much too working class. 'We', collectively, have a curious hang up about class.

The Beckhams are self-made, unlike certain 'old money' families constantly in the pages of Tattler who despise rather than court any form of media. But at least one prominent family is, nonetheless, a brand, and sells itself out constantly to the devil of public goodwill.

I'd personally rather one Victoria and David Beckham than three Kate
Middletons or William Windsors.

ThreeLeggedPug · 06/10/2023 20:37

I never really gave posh or becks much thought, very aware the public are predictably manipulated by harsh media.

Part way through the Netflix series Beckham (despite a firm disinterest in football & the spice girls band) and I must declare I really REALLY like Posh. She’s humorous, warm, supportive, thoughtful, knows her own mind and is certainly family centred. All round interesting person.

Geri Halliwell has it the best in my opinion. Married well. 3 beautiful children (SD included) Eldest daughter is actually very smart and based. She's not doing crazy things for attention, passed GCSE's with full compendium of A*s.

In addition to writing books for teens, Geri is wealthy and still famous, but not so famous that every iota of her life is under scrutiny.

She's got the balance right. And all her work is her own.

Castlerock44 · 06/10/2023 20:50

Why do some people always assume jealousy if someone voices their dislike of someone. There can be loads of reasons but jealousy is probably not the one.

There's loads of celebs I don't like but jealousy has nothing to do with it.

We dont have to like everyone.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/10/2023 20:52

To BigShort I haven't seen him do any of that stuff as only come on here or read news online, not on social media otherwise. But do not think there is any reason for him to be bullied as he has anxiety and does not seem like a bad lad at all. Were we all not a bit silly and stupid back when we were younger but thank god we did not have to live our lives in the public eye. But you are entitled to your opinion.
To the person saying that Geri Halliwell has it all, god she is the most annoying with her fake posh accent now and she also broke up a marriage to get her man. No one knows what goes on in anyone's life but even with all their houses, money I would not want my life in the public eye or my son's. Would not mind the Beckham's outdoor kitchen though as it looked fab.
