I've only skimmed this thread because the vitriolic posts leave me feeling ill. But.
I am of the Posh & Becks era. The Spice Girls were huge, waay more famous than David Beckham. So to whoever it was saying Victoria Beckham was a nobody, that is ignorant, rude and just so off the mark.
What I don't understand is the level of hatred for either/both of them. I remember in the early days some people complained that Victoria didn't smile. I actually went to the Spice Girls movie and it was fun, she was a laugh. I remember she said she didn't like her mouth and felt like it looked worse when she smiled. So the non-smiling is born out of insecurity.
I think what lots of English people don't get is just how famous the Beckhams are. They have both been at the forefront of fashion for decades now and actually wave the tourism flag for Britain in a way that you probably don't appreciate. They are iconic in status, and I remember thinking early in their marriage that they would probably last as they both seemed close to their families and had both experienced mega fame at a young age.
I'm impressed by the way they have kept their own children close, and I have enjoyed seeing photos of their family growing up.
People calling them thick, stupid, greedy, vain etc - do you realise how ugly you sound? They're out there living the good life and succeeding in every aspect while you type mean words on your phone.
There are few celebrities I feel this way about. For example, I had an instinctual loathing for Russell Brand from the moment I became aware of him. I have a dislike of Sarah Ferguson for her haughtiness and I always thought Queen Elizabeth was a very good queen. Of course, I have never met any of them and I appreciate that others will disagree with me.
But the Beckhams? I feel like they do a lot for England and are basically abused for being working class and it's gross.
