What stupid things have you bought?

I avoided it for so long then I got distracted by organisers and getting my life sorted so I started clicking away. Ended up with lots of tat that is just adding to the crap I’m trying to organise.

Got these drawers, thinking they would do as a bedside cabinet for DD. Clearly didn’t give the size and looked bigger in the picture.

😔 I'm a rodent lover, my ham's cage is a metre long. This is so sad.

Thanks for making me aware of this! I definitely am giving Temu a miss now, that's disgraceful of them. Pets at Home are also terrible with their record of how they treat small animals especially g pigs and rabbits. Tiny cage sizes, using guinea pig mills, (I have rescue sows from mills) selling guinea pigs less than 6 weeks old when they need to be suckling still, treats full of unsuitable ingredients marketed at small animals including guinea pigs (which makes no mention of the fact that a diet of a mouse or rat can't be compared to that of piggies (who aren't omnivorous like most small rodents) and have different digestive systems.

Makes me mad how animals especially small furries get treated by these ignorant companies 😡

This whole thread about slave labour, the environment and potential credit card hacking and the only thing that made you change your mind was the poor widdle furry animals? Good God - no wonder the planet and the western world is going to hell in a hand cart…🙄

I've just bought an air fryer accessories pack. It was 7.97. An identical one on Amazon was 19.95. The only difference I can see is that bezos adds his chunk in to the Amazon prices. As for data harvesting, what part of your life isn't harvested.

And how sure are you that it’s not going to set your airfryer on fire or that it’s actually not made with some kind of plastic/material (BPA FREE?) that will actually get into the food that you’re cooking? Really not worth the risk.

Nothing.
Unethical and supports child slave labour.

I wish people would realise this.
They have also taken money from people. Their sister company was involved in fraud, slave labour and toxic ingredients...

There seems to be an element of I can't see it, therefore it doesn't not happen. And people are addicted to buying this junk!

Hygeelady · 05/10/2023 18:01

Stroopwaffels · 05/10/2023 08:06

This argument of "they're all the same so it makes no difference" is so lazy.

There is a huge difference between buying a coat or mobile phone in good faith and later finding out that the ethics aren't great, or knowingly buying shite from sites like Temu/Shein because it's cheap.

When you buy from Temu you KNOW that they have dubious practices, not just in credit card fraud but also with their app tracking your data and using enslaved people and children to make the stuff they sell. There is no doubt about that. If you buy from them you are supporting that.

And most of what they sell is just cheap shit, tat nobody needs. This sort of shit, shipped across the planet is what means we're all drowning in single-use plastics and other rubbish.

Exactly this!

I hate the 'all or nothing' attitude on threads like this. The reality is a lot of people need a mobile phone but nobody needs all the random stuff on Temu. I am trying my best and just because I have a mobile does not mean I need to think 'F*ck it, I may as well go in 100% and buy everything I need for my house from Temu'. Gosh IMAGINE if everyone used that logic - we'd be screwed!

'I used an aeroplane this year therefore I may as well not recycle as I clearly don't give a stuff about the environment'

'I eat meat therefore I may as well abuse my pets as I clearly don't care about animals'

'I own a mobile phone therefore I shouldn't give a stuff about about children being forced to make plastic drawers'

It's just not how the world works. Nobody is perfect but a lot of us are trying to be better.

Agreed. I hate the extremes. The ones who don’t give a shit at one end and the preachy sanctimonious types at the other. Most of us could try a bit harder and make small differences without being perfect.

AllWeWantToDo · 05/10/2023 19:27

It says quite clearly that they are travel carriers . They aren't saying here's a cage to keep your small animal in all the time

Temu tat
SideBob · 05/10/2023 19:54

Do we really trust Temu shoppers to not use this as the main cage? How often are hamsters even transported, realistically? It's almost certainly going to be used inappropriately especially with the cutesy design

Looks heartbreakingly like a piggy I used to have years ago, same colouring etc. This world makes me so sad at times.

Well, as long as you’re comfy who cares about slave labour right?

I hope they sell your credit card details on.

That's a little heartless, @KoalaChaos didn't buy them herself . When I am able to buy something in a charity shop to wear (rarely as I'm a large size and tall and my disabilities make high street shopping hard) I don't fret about where it came from originally. Maybe I should but it's not my guilt or anxiety to carry.

Yeah I only know where they came from through sheer luck and chat since it was 3rd person info (buyer, re-gifter and then me) at that point.
I do a lot of charity shop shopping too @MyBigFatCapybara And I don't think I've EVER looked at the label inside to see where it was from originally. The only time I know the brand of what I'm buying in a charity shop tends to be on homeware when is all over it like Le Creuset (yes I once managed to fine Le Creuset in a charity shop!! 😁😁😁)
Certainly never looked for it in things like clothes. I don't even know what most of them mean nowadays if its not something obvious like M&S.
I know 'Falmer' used to be matalans own brand but I think it changed. And I always get the supermarket own brands the wrong way round.
@UnhideMyGratitude Should charity shops have a big list of brands and labels they shouldn't sell on based on a moral decisions? That's lost money for them. From a reduce/reuse/recycle point of view using and wearing anything in your wardrobe and buying pre used used is a positive.

Papoose is the word. I only know as I was once in a school play that involved native Americans.

🤣 @Createausername1970 thank you! I had actually tried googling it before typing it here and i was far enough off both Google and my auto correct didn't know what I was talking about.
For some reason at no point did my brain suggest it might have been a double O.

It's like the middle aisles in Lidl and ALDI, all cheap shite that you don't need

@qwerty123454 The middle aisle at lidl is a saviour sometimes!

We needed to drill out a new hole for the plug in the sink (bought a replacement due to the old one breaking and when we got it home and tried to fit it THEN we found out they aren't standard sizes!)

We could have bought a forstner bit of the right size for the drill for £10 at b&q. Instead we got one for £2 in the middle aisle in lidl.

And when my DH sent me a sad message saying he had dropped his fave WH Smith lunch box at work and broke the lid I could pick him up a new improved one from there.

It's all about buying what you need and not just buying it for fun. But getting something cheaper than the expensive branded version isn't a bad thing.

Stroopwaffels · 06/10/2023 08:11

Should charity shops have a big list of brands and labels they shouldn't sell on based on a moral decisions?

Most of the stuff from Shein, BooHoo, Pretty Little Thing etc which comes into our shop second hard doesn't get sold because it was so poor quality in the first place that it goes straight in the rag bag.
