Temu tat

What stupid things have you bought?

I avoided it for so long then I got distracted by organisers and getting my life sorted so I started clicking away. Ended up with lots of tat that is just adding to the crap I’m trying to organise.

Got these drawers, thinking they would do as a bedside cabinet for DD. Clearly didn’t give the size and looked bigger in the picture.

Temu tat

It’s not privileged to resist buying the tat on Temu and Shein.

If you don’t give a shit about people doing slave labour then don’t be surprised when people don’t give a shit about people struggling in this country too. What goes around comes around.

I don't buy from there. But I'm not going to judge people who are too poor to do otherwise. Not everyone has the headspace to worry about other people when they're worried about paying their own bills, and that's ok.

Frabbits · 05/10/2023 11:58

Even if you are not concerned with the environmental/ ethical problems of buying shit from places like this, they are completely playing fast and loose with your personal details. For that reason alone it's the height of idiocy to use these companies.

At least with Amazon etc you can be reasonably sure your personal details are secure and not being sold to criminals.

SideBob · 05/10/2023 12:02

I hate to be that guy BeezKness but buying tat of Temu doesn't help if you're struggling with bills

We all know people do why they have to do to get by. I don't think Temu is the kind of place people go to buy the bare necessities. It's made to be addictive and make people impulse buy junk they don't need

Even I've been tempted by some of things I've seen advertised because yes, it looks cute and fun. But the reality of these products, how they're made and the impact on the planet, is not.

As much as I want a giant strawberry beanbag, I know I can live without it

So much!!!
Prime bottle key rings for my children, fake pokemon cards, cake and biscuit stencils, trainers, sandals, leggings, sunglasses, scarfs, watches, bags, fake airpods, a shoe rack which also holds jackets and school bags, soap bar holder, mini brand toys, hats, tracksuits, Paris at night canvas, wall decals

Gosh I have bought a lot but it is free delivery and I get a lot of coupons emailed to me.

The quality is a lot better than wish.com so I'm happy.

Jesus wept.

THisbackwithavengeance · 05/10/2023 12:11

I've being nagged by my DD to sign up to it so she can get various discounts on her basket of crap.

It's no different to buying on Amazon though, same tat from same Chinese factories.

I don't buy on Amazon either and don't even have an account although there's a fucking furrow in my driveway from the Amazon delivery man going up and down delivering all the shite that DH and DS1 buy. Shock

Mischance · 05/10/2023 12:40

I do use amazon a lot. The ethics may be debatable, but ........

The reasons I use it are:

  • my nearest shops are half an hour's drive away - and that is only for basics like clothes and food.
  • other items (electronics etc.) are about 40 minutes at minimum away.
  • I would use masses of time and petrol getting back and forth.
  • I have limited and painful mobility. Walking round the shops is a problem.

Using amazon I can find what I need (and a good selection to choose from), place my order and have it delivered speedily. It makes sense for me to use it. They have succeeded because they are fiendishly efficient and reliable.

I do not think the same can be said of Temu.

Everything we do in this globally interconnected world carries ethical dilemmas. I do not use aeroplanes but most people think it is OK to hop on a plane to go wherever takes their fancy. Where do we start in this ethical minefield?

Dismissing slavery as "not having the headspace to worry about other people" is breathtaking.

Maybe I should get a slave to do all my cleaning since I just don't have the headspace to think about it myself.

It's so easy to detach from because all you have to do is press a few colourful buttons and don't actually have to confront the reality.

And dismissing the people in this country who don't have the luxury of choice due to finances is also breathtaking, so there you go.

Stroopwaffels · 05/10/2023 14:04

Nobody needs fake pokemon cards, wall decals, a paris at night canvas or prime bottle key rings. Nobody.

This is not a "oh the poor people, they can't afford to shop anywhere else". Nobody needs this shit ,whatever the price.

I don't need it, I want. So I got it.

MyBigFatCapybara · 05/10/2023 14:36

I'm tempted to join Temu, I have seen a gorgeous snugly hidey for guinea pigs on there and I have two piggies with birthdays this wheek. But I have heard that they spam you to death (Temu, not the g pigs!)

Frabbits · 05/10/2023 14:52

They spam you to death.

They sell personal details to criminals.

They rip-off intellectual property left, right and centre and sell badly made fake goods as real.

They exploit slave/child labour.

They have no consideration for the environmental issues of their products and the carbon footprint of sending piles of worthless shit all over the planet.

I mean, if you don't care about any of the above, then knock yourself out. But most people really should be concerned about point 2, if you are so self-centred and selfish not to care about the other things.

Edited

See these are the kind of things that would bother me. And it's not as though I can't also find cute guinea pig tat on Amazon or eBay or elsewhere. I don't have to use Temu, and think will give it a miss . But yeah that particular little g pig bed on Temu is adorable ! I shall look for similar elsewhere. Oh Sew Annie is a private business which does lovely guinea pig accessories.

MyBigFatCapybara · 05/10/2023 15:03

I do think @Beezknees has a point when it comes to essentials like clothes, homecare etc. I am disabled and on a low income and Amazon has been a Godsend. I wish I did have the ability to shop more on the high street but it's logistically and financially difficult for me these days.

Please do not buy your Guinea pigs a gift from a website who are telling customers that these are acceptable cages for hamsters:

www.temu.com/hamster-cage-with-running-wheel-hamster-cage-large-portable-transparent-carrier-box-for-small-animals-g-601099517824337.html

Or who advertise this for Guinea pigs when a hamster running wheel could really hurt a Guinea pig:

www.temu.com/cartoon-hamster-cage-portable-small-animals-hamster-hedgehog-guinea-pig-carrier-cage-g-601099519761224.html

As a small animal lover, no way would I give this company a penny of my money.

Thanks for making me aware of this! I definitely am giving Temu a miss now, that's disgraceful of them. Pets at Home are also terrible with their record of how they treat small animals especially g pigs and rabbits. Tiny cage sizes, using guinea pig mills, (I have rescue sows from mills) selling guinea pigs less than 6 weeks old when they need to be suckling still, treats full of unsuitable ingredients marketed at small animals including guinea pigs (which makes no mention of the fact that a diet of a mouse or rat can't be compared to that of piggies (who aren't omnivorous like most small rodents) and have different digestive systems.

Makes me mad how animals especially small furries get treated by these ignorant companies 😡

Stroopwaffels · 05/10/2023 15:37

You are wasting your breath / typing effort @autumnpumpkinlattes - all that matters is that it's cheap.

Hazlethenut · 05/10/2023 15:40

I've bought nothing from Temu despite the constant adverts bombarding my phone. It's easy to not buy tat...just don't buy it!

Smoky1107 · 05/10/2023 15:48

I had literally just done a small order m, now cancelled!! So right I don't need tat and I panicked about my data!!

waterlego · 05/10/2023 15:51

Good for you @BBno4. As long as you get to buy cheap shit that you WANT, fuck everyone and everything else, eh? 👏🏻

Hope they don’t do anything dodgy with your card details! 🤞

SideBob · 05/10/2023 15:52

@autumnpumpkinlattes the fact that 'breatheable' is in the description for that 😳 good to know that this particular box allows the hamster to breathe.

Holy shit that is dreadful! I had no idea they were making animal cages like that.
