DS's school trip was offered on a 'first come first serve' basis and is now being drawn at random from a hat

AIBU to think the school should honour the first come first serve basis they initially stated for allocating places on the school trip?

They have, due to a 'huge response' of requested places, decided to draw names at random on Friday.

After promising my child a place and ensuring I handed the form in promptly to the teacher (in fairness, it sounds like a lot of other parents did, too), I'm now going to have to explain to my 4 year old he's unlikely to have a place.

How do your own DC's schools handle situations like this where there's limited places and lots of interest?

@RTGC, I've said we can do either day as I know not everyone will be able to make a Saturday but we can. I also think it's really generous of the staff to give up some of their weekend to make it happen!

@SiousieSoo, I just hope it means I don't have to read anymore of your ridiculous comments. For something so trivial, you've been REALLY invested in this thread. Such twisted logic.

This tired rehash of calling someone who does not agree with an OP's stance 'over invested' is really tedious and nonsensical. I answered posts! It is not like me to just let something die if I don't agree with it. So answering comments/insults that are levied at me makes me over invested. Okey dokey. You are really quite something else. I do hope you find something else to be 'outraged' about very soon!

Great outcome, glad the school has made arrangements to accommodate all the children who want to go.

@SiousieSoo, it's honestly fair enough to disagree with me (or anyone else) as many people on here have, but the way your word your messages is honestly outrageous. You need to learn how to communicate your thoughts respectfully if you ever want anyone to take your opinion on board.

I honestly do not care if anyone on here wants to take my opinion on board though, and I do not need to learn anything from you whatsoever. People on here very rarely change their minds about anything so it is not something that concerns me at all. I can however express an opinion if I choose to.

@SiousieSoo, and where in ANY of my messages have I said that I've been outraged? Please stick to the facts and stop exaggerating everything like the childish news comment. It's tiresome that a grown woman can act so immaturely.

You do not have to state in writing you are outraged to give me the impression that you are outraged. To start such an impassioned thread about the ins and outs of such an inconsequential issue, conveys to me, an attitude of 'outrage'.

Worriedaandconfused · 06/10/2023 13:15

@SiousieSoo, well, I'll tell you now, you're wrong. It's that simple. Please don't try to tell me how I feel about a topic again. It's ludicrous behaviour.

I did not tell you how you feel, I said you conveyed to me a certain attitude.

They shouldn’t be running a trip for 4 yos without enough places for everyone. It’s as simple as that.

Of course 4 yo’s won’t be able to understand why they can’t go.

I also think they shouldn’t change the rules after they’ve stated one thing, but then again first come first served isn’t always fair - sometimes when children live in two homes, the parent who does all the life admin doesn’t get the form straight away. So then the kids who might need a bit of a treat more (depending on circumstances, but in some cases this will be so) don’t get to go on the trip.

Worriedaandconfused · 06/10/2023 13:22

@SiousieSoo, right? I've told you that I am not now, not have I been 'enraged' or even angry. Anything else you have to say is a moot point. End of discussion.

First come first served is rubbish, speaking as a school governor and active PTA committee member.
If I thought my kids were getting opportunities others weren't as a result of my volunteering and ability to hand forms in I would say something to the school. The reason I volunteer is to support school leadership in their work and that means making great fair opportunities available to all the kids (like all the four year olds that want to go ffs).

I'm so pleased they've managed to get a second date. I hope your DC enjoys it, OP :)

They're doing a school trip for 4yos and can't accommodate everyone? That's shit. It should be for all of none. They're 4 FFS.
