Of course I'm not, it's Halloween, let's get scared.

So what is the spookiest/most unexplainable experience you had? We're talking paranormal here.

We stay in a holiday cottage in Wales every year. and strange things happen every time we stay.
The first time we stayed, I was woken at 3am by the wooden coat hangers in the small wardrobe, it sounded like someone had run their hand along them to make them rattle. I lay there and said “did you hear that?” to my DH who I knew would be alseep, he replied “yes”
My son has also stared over my shoulder and said “ hello” I asked him who he’s saying hello to, the man, was his reply.
He has also said the man tells him to go to sleep at night- he never has his bedroom light on at home, but when we stay in the cottage, he always asks for it to be left on.
I’ve had jewellery move from my bedside cabinet, to be found under the open stair area in the downstairs, a clothes airer under the stairs suddenly collapse- with no washing on it.
Ive spoken to the owners and they say quite a few guests mention there’s a feeling of a presence in the under stairs area and have said odd things have happened to them.
Our trip this year included the toaster popping up when the owners came to greet us in the cottage and were telling us of comments made by other guests- toaster was unplugged at the wall
i woke the first night to find the covers completely off my husband and him lying there asleep - he was cross in the morning and wanted to know why I was pulling the blanket off him during the night- I wasn’t
And when I having a shower on the morning we were leaving, I heard the latch on the bathroom door click and watched it slowly pushed open- DH and my son were fats asleep in bed.
I mentioned it to the owners when we left, they looked a bit sheepish and said the doors opening on their own were the odd things the other guests had mentioned.
We also say hello and goodbye to Dave and we’re booked in for next year 😂

Why do you keep returning? I'd be spooked.

SlipperySlope99 · 12/10/2023 16:26

@squidnames as it’s the perfect location, we get on well with the owners and it’s really not scary, it doesn’t feel ominous or unwelcoming. They have said they may get it blessed soon, as the comments from guests have increased

TheMurderousGoose · 12/10/2023 16:30

Aww, now I’m thinking of holiday let ghosts feeling a bit lonesome in the winter time.

IHateLegDay · 14/10/2023 11:17

When I was a child, I'd often see the shape of a man in the corner of my room.
I had an insanely strong imagination as a child so I just put it down to my mind playing tricks on me. I never felt scared by him, he just felt like part of the furniture.

I had a friend staying over once and we were lying in my bed chatting when she stopped suddenly and said "you know there's a man in the corner, right?" I just said "I know. He won't hurt you." and we carried on chatting. It was totally absurd that neither of us were more freaked out.

That would be a fun prompt for a mildly comic short story. The ghosts are thrilled to have company again at the beginning of the holiday season and throw themselves into a particularly inventive display of hiding small objects, turning the lights on and off and appearing to children and dogs to show their appreciation…

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 14/10/2023 13:16

I would absolutely read that!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 14/10/2023 13:36

Holiday version of Rentaghost 😁 (those of us over 50!)

Watch it. Don’t write it down.

We had a lovely gentle spirit at our holiday cottage this summer. I only saw his shadow but he had such a calm feeling and I had a sense that he'd worked there (it was originally a 17th century brewery). I actually missed him when we came home.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/10/2023 08:32

So how come the dog was happy to enter the area after the ‘presence’ had been politely asked to leave?

You tell me - perhaps someone had put some particularly anromatic and enticing treats in a far corner? A tuna tin with some of it left in would have enticed our old dog anywhere, but I’m sure you’ll think of something even better. 🙂

Well, I can probably think of several "better" things in terms of it not being a spirit of a dead person but I doubt that will satisfy anyone so determined to believe in a supernatural explanation for everything.

Go on, then, I’d really be interested to hear your ideas!

Graciebobcat · 15/10/2023 10:23

101 other things the dog could have reacted to that was not a ghost (smell, sound etc), dog picking up that people were more relaxed after the "ghost" had gone and was picking up on the tension before that, dog didn't like a particular human in the house, sheer coincidence or a hundred other random things that dogs do.

I could never get my parents' dog to follow the footpath across the golf course. I wonder whether it was a portal to the underworld, or he spotted a zombie golfer once, or perhaps he didn't like the sound of golf clubs hitting the golf balls.

Bobsledgirl · 15/10/2023 16:42

years ago on a family holiday our dog woukd simply not settle in the old cottage we were in. He hated it. Not saying it was a ghost but something spooked him.

Howmanysleepsnow · 15/10/2023 21:46

@Verv please can I see the photo?

We have recently had a run of very weird things going on, it all started with my 15 year old DS. He was up late on his phone, and a touch activated bouncy ball in his room lit up. He started filming it and has caught a very quiet woman’s voice that says “I know you”. The next day, at his dads house, he heard tapping in the hallway outside his room, went out and snapped two pics. One has nothing, the other has a female at the bottom of the stairs staring at him. You can even see her blouse and pig tails. It all died down for a month or so, but recently we’ve had things moving in the house(shower curtain has moved on its own twice, some dvds flew off a shelf, and a football rolled on its own) and something touched my foot in bed the other night as I was dozing off. I shit myself at that one 😱

Can you post the picture?

Whylurkwhenicanjoinin · 16/10/2023 08:41

Did anyone watch Uncanny? What about the Miss Howard story then? I found it pretty creepy and felt sorry for Kate, whatever was going on there.

HashBrownandBeans · 16/10/2023 11:47
