How often do you eat at McDonalds?

Just interested. I think DH visits too often with the kids, he would take them even more if it wasn’t for me asking him not to.

For context he takes them once a fortnight, he would take them once or twice in a week if it wasn’t for me putting my foot down.

It annoys me as I do 90% of the parenting (he works away often) and I feel I can’t give them a lazy tea as they’re already having enough crap.

I know I’ll be criticised for that and not too interested - just wonder what other people do?

Never - last time I went was 2014 and DC have never been. Lots of friends go weekly / fortnightly though.

Irismarle · 04/10/2023 20:25

Maybe half a dozen times a year, or more. I don’t think it’s that unhealthy or expensive if you choose well. For breakfast I like an egg McMuffin meal with a fruit bag instead of hash browns which I find too greasy and orange juice as the drink + a white coffee. For lunch I love fillet o fish which is basically a fish finger sandwich. I do eat fries with it, but just a small pack, and then a coffee, which is about the cheapest on sale anywhere. I think it’s all reasonably healthy - I’m not overweight, anyway, and I’m almost never ill. I find it quite a treat, actually.

Nicola101177 · 04/10/2023 20:25

it should never be considered a treat it’s not a treat it’s the opposite. A treat these days is a Sunday lunch for a lot of children. Sad times. Ps mine go about twice a month with their dad also normally convenient - he can’t see the issue. The place makes me feel ill.

Keeper11 · 04/10/2023 20:30

Twice in the last 20 years! Didn’t like it either time!

DarthTater3 · 04/10/2023 20:32

Never. It just doesn’t occur to me to go there. If my kids asked about it I’d probs take them as a one off or very occasional treat but defo wouldn’t want it to be a regular thing. Don’t like the food enough apart from anything else.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 04/10/2023 20:35

very infrequently, my primary ages kids have had a handful in their lives (including Burger King and equivalents). It’s just junk and we’d only go at a services or abroad if needing to grab something quick. We don’t get takeaways either but do eat shop bought pizza at home and go out for lunch/dinner most weeks.

Yourebeingtooloud · 04/10/2023 20:36

Once or twice a year? Generally on a long journey when it’s the most available / easiest option. My dc don’t really like it though.

Greenshed · 04/10/2023 20:54

Never have and never will.

Bubbles90 · 04/10/2023 20:58

Never.

The breakfasts 🤢. DD likes them and bought one for me a few months ago, bloody hell it was vile. Rubbery egg, weird flat sausage and a greasy, bitty hash brown. One bite and she had the rest of it. I don’t understand the attraction. Don’t get me wrong, I love a full English or a bacon barm but McD’s offerings are a no.

Nothing compares to an Ulster Fry

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_breakfast#Ulster

Always found it baffling that the rest of the UK doesn't have fried potato bread in a full breakfast. There is nothing like it which makes an Ulster Fry the best. A writer for BBC compared all the regions and said the same.

myfaceismyown · 04/10/2023 21:02

DD (now adult) never liked the food. I could tolerate the fillet of fish but don't like the weird spongey, tasteless bread they use which reminds me of wonder bread. DH quite liked the burgers but not a lot. We stopped going when we realised that the only one wanting to eat there was my DS who would ask for a "happy meal" just for the toy, and would leave the edible part.
Only time I had an enjoyable time there was in 1986. DH and I were backpacking and camping and got a train to Brussels with hardly any money left. Most of the restaurants and cafes were closed for their summer holidays but McDonalds was open. We decided to share a portion of fries - to our surprise it was enormous!! A proper plate of fries and enough for two! I guess little cardboard envelopes are not acceptable to the Belgians :) Sometimes I wonder if they still serve bigger fries portions over there... but not enough to repeat the experience.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 04/10/2023 21:07

Roughly once every 6-8 weeks? We live in a city centre with lots of branches nearby and the kids love a Happy Meal.

ManchesterLu · 04/10/2023 21:07

Far too often. Stepson works there and he brings us back a meal each quite regularly after his shift, as they let them take food home if it's quiet and they've got too much cooked.

But things are tough at the moment, times are hard, things are expensive, so I'm not turning down free food, I don't care what it is.

LaDamaDeElche · 04/10/2023 21:18

I don’t go much, but I do love a double cheeseburger. Once a fortnight is fine. Even twice a week is fine if you are eating an otherwise healthy diet.

Weebleonaworkout · 04/10/2023 21:22

About 4 times a year roughly

For heaven’s sake! Twice a week? That would be like eating deadly nightshade while riding a tiger in a cage full of rattle snakes.

Do you have any idea just how toxic a filet ‘o fish is? The UPF factor is through the roof.

I’d be surprised if anyone who eats at Maccies twice this week will see Christmas.

Almost never but after seeing this thread all week I was inspired to have one today. The power of suggestion 😂

It's a treat in our household and always will be!

MrsLighthouse · 04/10/2023 21:50

Every few months as kids have “progressed” to Wendy’s / sushi 🙄 and Pret as preferred treats . Nostalgic for the cheapness of a Happy Meal !

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 04/10/2023 21:55

Sometimes once a week. Sometimes once every three months.

I think once a fortnight is fine.

I know many people from diverse ethnic backgrounds who never go there either
Dear oh lor Grin Goodness me, if only we were all so open and diverse to not want a quick and easy dinner sometimes.

TheRealHousewife · 04/10/2023 22:09

I never eat a McDonald's as I’ve celiac disease. Any foods containing gluten are strictly off the menu for me.

Pinkfluff76 · 04/10/2023 22:38

Never the food is crap and bad for you

Melomelop · 04/10/2023 22:55

I’m not sure if this has already been said/asked, but do those posters saying they never/very rarely have a McDonalds also never/rarely have any other form of takeaway?

Fish and chips, Chinese, Indian etc - none of them are exactly healthy foods either. I find a lot of people who look down their noses at McDonalds also have no problem with ordering a Chinese from their local takeaway on a Friday night as though that’s the much better option.

And just to clarify, I actually like all of the options I’ve mentioned. I don’t have takeaways very often (be it McDonalds, KFC, Chinese, Indian, Pizza etc) mainly because they’re just all more expensive then cooking at home - but if I had the money, I’d probably be getting them more regularly 🤣
